On Wednesdays, we talk about eating more sustainably- at least that’s what NeueHouse’s Creative Couple Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik do. “I had always thought that eating healthy was more so something you do just to look awesome,” recalled Deschanel.
Last Wednesday night, Deschanel and Pechenik sat down to discuss the process of reconnecting with the food we eat. The night started off with a video from, “Your Food’s Roots” which showcased the advantages of consuming sustainably produced fish. “We started wondering, why is food as nature intended it more expensive than adulterated food,”said Pechenik. NeueHouse’s Creative Couples series highlight “powerful couples who choose to collaborate”, also shined a light on Deschanel and Pechenik’s newest task, The Farm Project. The Farm Project mission is to make it easier for everyone to grow their own food and directly connect with farmers in their communities. “52% of produce goes bad on the way. We are working with a network of farms to grow baby plants and we can grow 100 baby plants in the same space you could grow one mature plant,” said Pechenik.
Deschanel and Pechenik first began questioning the origins of their food when she was pregnant with their first child. “We were really looking to eat as absolutely healthy as possibly and Jacob has this science background, he has a degree in chemical engineering. He kept asking me: ‘What are you eating? How can we tweak it? How can we have the best, smartest baby?’ It was a little annoying but more than that, it sparked my curiosity,” Deschanel said during the Q&A.
The Q&A was able to emphasize some very important questions the audience had. During the talk a tearful Deschanel pinpointed the privilege that came with the talk of eating more sustainably. “That is one of the things that inspired us the most,” said Deschanel ,”It really bothered me that I was able to eat really healthy when I was pregnant and other people can’t, that there are food deserts where this isn’t possible”.
