This Tuesday evening, we had the pleasure of attending an early screening of Amazon MGM Studios’ new feature film, You’re Cordially Invited, held at Jazz at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, New York.
The R-rated rom-com stars Reese Witherspoon, who plays the type-A, protective older sister of one bride, and Will Ferrell, who hilariously portrays the sweet but overbearing dad of the other bride. Together, these two create moments of comedy gold.
The film’s conflict (and humor) arises when Witherspoon and Ferrell’s characters both book their respective loved ones’ wedding ceremonies on the same weekend, on the same quaint island in the American Southeast. The accidental double booking leads to the two wedding parties sharing the lovely, but limited, amenities that the island has to offer. The combination of small spaces, crowds of people, and a wedding weekend creates a never-ending loop of rivalry and shenanigans that unfold throughout the film.
The screening itself included a couple of photo opportunities, along with popcorn and water concessions. But the highlight of the evening happened right before the film started. The film’s director, Nicholas Stoller, gave a brief introduction and overview of the film. He then brought Witherspoon and Ferrell to the stage. The comedy duo thanked the audience for coming out to support their film, while of course, cracking a few jokes along the way.
The two also called out the hard work of the rest of the film’s cast. They spoke a few words acknowledging those who were in attendance in the audience. Ferrell concluded the introduction with the random but captivating quip, “I think we all just need to have a laugh, right? So with that, grab your Invisalign, put it in, lean back, and enjoy,” which this author did just that.
