Where would we be without our make-up artists that are making it happen day after day spending extensive hours on sets assisting designers bring their vision to life and to appreciate those hardworking creative individuals we present a very refreshing Vlada Krukovskaya, a dope muse and a make-up artist who’s work speaks for itself. After coming across her instagram, it was a an instant breath a fresh air, we saw immaculate work of art that we had to ask her to share a few gems.
The Knockturnal: How do i pick the perfect lipstick?
Vlada Krukovskaya:I suppose I choose lipsticks according to its packaging and most importantly the matte formula so that it lasts throughout the whole day.
The Knockturnal: Where are you from and how does it effect your creativity?
Vlada Krukovskaya: I’m from Russia, Saint Petersburg, it’s quite difficult to succeed around here, but it’s possible since not a lot of people experiment with makeup as much as I do, that’s why they tend to ask my help, maybe I’m even more of an artsy makeup artist
The Knockturnal: Your work for OLGA CHERNOSCHEKOVA was so dope. It was literally in my face! It’s so bold that it caught my eye. What was the process like for that shoot?
Vlada Krukovskaya: Working with Olya is the best thing ever, she gives me complete freedom in expressing my creativity and I try to blow people’s minds. For example like bloody barbed wire on my face, or “Peace”.
The Knockturnal: Is being an artist what you always wanted to be?
Vlada Krukovskaya: I’ve been drawing since I was little and my parents sent me to arts school in due course. Currently drawing is the only thing that I want to do in life.
The Knockturnal: Your instagram page is so dope!
Vlada Krukovskaya: thank you!
The Knockturnal: Tell us about your exhibition in Russia.
Vlada Krukovskaya: Sometimes I post my art on different platforms, but not often, makeup generally gains more interest than art, in Saints Petersburg it’s difficult to throw an exhibition.
The Knockturnal: How do you pick your muse?
Vlada Krukovskaya: It depends on my mood, when I listen to Crystal Castles or Merylin Manson I want to create something dark and grim, though I’m always drawn to darkness and eerie things.
The Knockturnal: When you are picking a subject, do you have preferences like? how high are the cheekbones? Interesting face structure or rare chin type, or anything!
V: I don’t particularly have a type of models since I don’t choose them, but ideally a clear skin would be something I’m looking for.
The Knockturnal: So you get to spend a lot of time on sets? Tell us some of the DOs and Donts of being on a 24-48 hrs set. Can be anything.
Vlada Krukovskaya: I am able to shoot from early morning until late night without lunch break, the most important thing is water, cigarettes and iphone charger. At the fashion week I had about 30 models, it’s a huge stress but at the same time an amazing experience.
The most important rule is: don’t party before the shoot or you won’t make it.
The Knockturnal: I suck at contour! But I love my eyeliner. How do I contour my face?
Vlada Krukovskaya: Lots of people don’t do it, I myself can’t imagine my life without heavy contouring of nose and hollows of the cheeks, I think if you figure it out once you won’t be able to stop. Personally I feel like makeup without contouring seems unfinished.
The Knockturnal: Do you ever research a person’s skin before hand?
Vlada Krukovskaya: I’ve never had any skin blemishes or other issues, but I do know a lot about it and when I see a certain type of skin on someone, I know which foundation suits best in terms of coverage and formula, just make sure to have a good skin care.
The Knockturnal: You work with a lot of designers, name top 5 up coming designers that the world deserves to know about.
Vlada Krukovskaya: 1-Olga Chernoschekova(@o.cheshe)
2- Vanya Borisovna (@vanya_borisovna)
3- Yana Gilvichyute (@yanagilvi)
4- Regina Zaripova ( @regina_zaripova)
5- AMPLITUDA (@amplituda_design
The Knockturnal: Tell us about Juli_Kais shoot you worked on. I just saw the pictures and I’m blown away!
Vlada Krukovskaya: The collection was inspired by England, @julia_kais told me I could go as crazy as I can, and I wrote “SORRY QUEEN” on the face and they were genuinely impressed.
The Knockturnal: Most people don’t know anything about skin routine neither do they try to spend time on. In your opinion as a make-up artist, what are some must have skin routine things that anyone can follow and incorporate into their fast pace lifestyle.
Vlada Krukovskaya: I think it’s 100% taking your makeup off before going to bed and having a concealer, sculpting product and a lip balm on, the skin would look nice and fresh.
The Knockturnal: What is the one product that you can’t work without?
Vlada Krukovskaya: Probably without neon bright colour eyeshadow palette, you can do anything with it : eyeliner, smoky eye, lips, brows if you prefer colours over nudes, and of course concealer if you don’t have access to foundation.
The Knockturnal: The most memorable job you’ve done?
Vlada Krukovskaya: It was a Alina Gritsaeva(@dat_ghurl) show by FUTURUM (Mercedes Benz Fashion Week). I did something I was endlessly proud of for the first time, because usually I’m too self-critical, but the harder job is, the better and more exciting it is for me, by doing that I’m challenging myself asking myself “can I do it?” as if it was some sort of a game.
