The UrbanWorld Film Festival will return to New York City celebrating it’s 20th anniversary between September 21st-September 25th. Kicking off the festival’s opening night this year will be a special screening of the Disney film Queen of Katwe . The screening will be followed by a Q&A with David Oyelowo who stars in the film, (as well as being one of Urbanworld’s 2016 festival ambassadors alongside Ava Duvernay), and director Mira Nair.
“It’s an absolute honor to have festival alumni Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo serve as co-ambassadors for Urbanworld’s 20th Anniversary Film Festival,” said Gabrielle Glore, Festival Director & Head of Programming, Urbanworld Film Festival. “Ava has a long and layered history with Urbanworld evolving from her tenure as festival publicist in the early years to her directorial debut with her first short film, to showcasing various narrative and documentary projects at the festival, to being the award-winning and glass shattering filmmaker she is today.” Glore added Revolt and HBO will serve as both presenting partner and founding partner for this year’s festival respectively.
The festival will include numerous screenings, as well as panel discussions including a discussion with cast members of the upcoming BET New Edition biopic mini-series alongside original New Edition members Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell and Ronnie Devoe. Actress Sanaa Latham will also be participating in a discussion about her upcoming Fox television series Shots Fired.
Visual artist and storyteller Shantell Martin, created a special artwork to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the festival. Martin’s artwork will be showcased throughout the festival.
