All we need is art.
The ethos of society is often reflected in the paintings, sculptures, and photographs of a region. Harmoniously bringing together the emotional range of hope and a desire for a better world is profoundly true in a collective found in North Fork.
Sound View Greenport and The Harbor Front Inn together have created a utopia that enriches the hearts of all who are lucky enough to take part in the The Uncommon Art program found in Greenport. Empowering and supportive, hotelier Erik Warner has created a world that is full of joyous enlightenment.
Both grand properties found in the North Fork under his umbrella are places of splendid hospitality as much as they are havens for the art world. Sprinkling the halls of the hotels are beautiful pieces of art curated with passion and dedication. There is something so majestic about the proud found in showcasing local artisans through pop-up installations mixed with permanent pieces all created with a truly divine local flavor.
Instrumental to the project is Uncommon Artist Residency Director and Director of Guest Culture, Kara Hoblin, who is leading the curatorial direction for the group exhibit at the Center. She works hands on with The Anvil Hotel, and Sound View Greenport as well is the owner of the North Fork Art Collective with years of curatorial experience.
What is fostered here in the North Fork is pure magic. Between locals and visitors alike being able to absorb incredible art to the people themselves who create, there is an opportunity for expression. There is an opportunity for art lover to simply love.
The residency program allows artists to create whatever they wish and only ask in return that the artist hosts a community initiative. As part of the residency, each artist is invited to share something with the community whether it be a performance, an open working session, or even a display of their work. In many cases this can be a talk or lecture but artists have hosted classes, had performances, & have explored unique ways to connect with the community.
The specific showcase of the Uncommon Artist Residency is particularly notable. In its 8th year at Sound View Greenport, it was launched by Warner in 2018 to support the local, national, regional, and global artist community and bring them to the shores of the North Fork.
“Our artists in residence pull inspiration from the North Fork’s natural wonders, the connections to the community, and the physical spaces of our property,” says Hoblin. “We provide up to 10 artists every year with 1 week accommodations (including complimentary continental breakfast) and a $100 gift certificate to our on-site restaurant The Halyard. Artist’s are housed in our apartment suite so they have access to a full kitchen while working on property. We require all residents to share and document their experience as well as host some sort of community initiative. Sometimes artists will give a talk about their work, or a performance they’ve been feeling out, or a class.”
Artists, musicians and dancers converge at Sound View where a powerful conversation of the creative community ignites. Artist participants host open working sessions, display key works, and perform, inviting the community into rare opportunities to witness the artist’s journey, from inspiration to completion.
Sound View Greenport and The Harbor Front Inn will once again host the Uncommon Art Residency Program between January and April 2025. The program has also since expanded to their sister property The Anvil Hotel in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
The Uncommon Art program is a means for our hotels to continue their dedication to supporting the arts, fostering inspiration and creativity, and sharing with the local community.
Past participants have included emerging artists from a variety of mediums including dancer Brendan Fernandes, artists Erik Bergrin, Jules Gimbrone and Julia Bland, and Joe’s Pub musicians Treya Lam, Monday Michiru, and Mau Quiros.
