Timothy Olyphant, Cassie Pappas, and Jonathan Tropper discuss their new upcoming series, ‘Lucky’ on Apple TV+, exploring themes of identity, survival, and legacy.
Lucky is an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling novel by Marissa Stapley. The Apple TV+ series follows Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong, on the run after a multi-million dollar heist goes wrong. Her husband, who is also her partner in crime, leaves her to fend for herself against the FBI and a brutal crime boss. After getting caught up in the criminal life she was born into, Lucky must find a way out.
Ahead of its release, actor Timothy Olyphant discusses what it was like embodying a con artist who raises his daughter, Lucky, to be the same. Olyphant praises the creative team, saying, “A job like this, it’s so easy in that the material’s so beautiful that you think, oh, if I just say the words, it’s going to be a good scene.” Not only did they make playing his role of John Armstrong easier, but their talent also drew Olyphant to the project. Olyphant is proud of his work on Lucky and looks forward to sharing it with the rest of the world.
During our interview, executive producers of Lucky, Jonathan Tropper and Cassie Pappas, express how they captured the complexity of self-identity from paper to screen. Tropper tells us how Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Lucky Armstrong, is really able to “convey what she’s feeling without words,” bringing the story together through her point of view. Considering the many different shooting locations, Pappas considers the choice to film through Lucky’s eyes the best way to show her internal thoughts and struggles.
As this story balances a complex relationship between love and deceit, Tropper reveals that the characters are not villains. The realism side of Lucky reminds the audience that, at times, loved ones let us down, but that doesn’t mean we stop loving them.
