Check out our exclusive interview with Sleepy Rose.
After enduring heaps of pain and loss, such as the passing of his sister and best friend, Sleepy Rose used his music as a tool to keep their legacy aflame. While incarcerated for two years, he found himself creating rhymes nonstop and received an overwhelmingly positive response to his first music video ever for “Gangsta.” Hailing from the same neighborhood as Hott LockedN, Sleepy also had to overcome the odds to begin his musical journey. “I noticed he had the look, but he really had the music. He came from nothing, and I knew he could make an impact,” said 2 Chainz on Sleepy making a name for himself (T.R.U.). Most recently Sleepy Rose was featured on The Real University’s compilation album No Face No Case, along with label mates Skooly, Hott LockedN, Worl and founder 2 Chainz. The 15-track album includes features from NLE Choppa, Quavo, Quando Rondo and more. Find out more about Sleepy Rose below!
The Knockturnal: How long have you been making music?
Sleepy Rose: I’ve been making music for 2 years.
The Knockturnal: What’s been your favorite part of being signed to The Real University?
Sleepy Rose: They actually working you feel me? It’s a lot of the labels that got a lot of artists that should be poppin’ and they not poppin’ like that. I ain’t gonna cap we got the best label.
The Knockturnal: How did you and 2 Chainz connect?
Sleepy Rose: Through the A&R Big Shay he brought me to a meeting with Street Execs and then through there a couple days later I got a call from Chainz saying “come to the airport.” It was just crazy the way it happened.
The Knockturnal: How did the A&R find you?
Sleepy Rose: My best friend he had died and his dad was Chainz’s friend so when he died Chainz gave him a job as an A&R so he can get out of the streets. So Pop came and got me and Hott and brought me to Street Execs, then that’s where it took off.
The Knockturnal: Rest in peace to your friend, do you feel like you’ve used his passing as motivation to go harder?
Sleepy Rose: Yeah! I’m him, he’s me. He’s still here, that’s all motivation.
The Knockturnal: What’s some good advice that 2 Chainz has given you?
Sleepy Rose: Your work ethic gotta be A1, you gotta pull up on time all that!
The Knockturnal: What are you currently working on?
Sleepy Rose: I got my mixtape on the way.
The Knockturnal: Can we expect any features from your label mates on the project?
Sleepy Rose: Yeah I’m gonna have all of them on there.
