On September 24, 2018, NBC’s new medical drama New Amsterdam was celebrated at The Paley Center for Media where the stars and creators of the upcoming series stopped by to screen and discuss the premiere episode.
“Break the rules. Heal the system.” That’s the tagline of the new NBC series, New Amsterdam which follows Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), a new and incoming medical director who seeks to shake up the bureaucracy of the New Amsterdam public hospital and bring it to focus on patient’s needs once more.
Also starring Anupam Kher, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, and Tyler Labine, the show is inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer’s riveting memoir “Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital” which follow his fifteen years at America’s oldest public hospital and the cast and creators were thrilled to be in New York City at the Paley Center for Media to screen the pilot episode and interact with fans.
Joining the ranks of other medical shows that have previously aired and those currently on the air, New Amsterdam makes a name for itself and settles any uneasy thoughts worried viewers may have that this program will be just another medical drama that will get lost in the shuffle of soap opera antics and endless storylines.
Executive producer and director Peter Horton, who was previously attached to the hit ABC series, Grey’s Anatomy, shared “the way we approached this show is very different then how people approach other medical shows. Our attempt with this hospital show was to use the genre to talk about the country at large and the ethics and values and issues at large.”
Creator and executive producer David Schulner also added, “We’re gonna talk about gun control immediately because that’s what’s happening in the emergency rooms in New York City. We’re gonna talk about the opioid addiction, we’re gonna talk about climate change, the foster care system, trans rights, prisoners rights and so on.”
After the screening of the pilot episode, the entire cast (minus Ryan Eggold) joined Horton, Schulner, and Dr. Manheimer to talk about the series some more and answer fan questions.
New Amsterdam premieres on Tuesday, September 25 on NBC at 10:00/9:00pm central.
