The Makeup Look Behind
“Carmen’s girl this season is modern mermaid, so when you think about that you think about something that is a bit fantasy, but still real. Like everyone’s fantasy is a mermaid, but how do you make it achievable? So in my head I’m like thinking, you know it needs to be a neutral shadow as a base, and that represents sand. And then I wanted to add color which represents the water. So I wanted to add crystals and also some glitter but I really put clusters and clusters of it and the most important part is that it’s even so it’s almost a little bit imperfect and a little bit messy. So in Asia they have something called wabi-sabi which is imperfect perfection which I feel like now women are thinking, I don’t always have to be perfect. If something’s always a little bit off it makes it a little more young, more edgy, more fresh. Even with that, Carmen’s girl has a little bit of sophistication, so I felt like we needed to refine the brow a little there needs to be a little bit of smoke and mascara. So we made her a pretty modern mermaid.”

Nail Tech, Phylicia:
On the ‘Carmen Marc Vavlo’ Nail Look
“Right now we’re working with Orly nude breathable color line, the look for the show we wanted to work with something sort of soft and feminine but also have to play around with the color a little bit just to give it a bit of a pop. So we are using two coats of ‘Vacation’ and one coat of anything goes and ‘Anything Goes’ has a nice shimmer and iridescent shine to it, so we wanted to use that as a top coat.”
How the Nails Complement the SS18 collection:
“So the colors are kind of muted, they go with anything since it’s a neutral color, it’s like a soft grey with an undertone of purple. We met with the designer and he fell in love with the color, we thought it was a multifunctional color that goes pretty well with every piece, it goes well with oranges, yellows, and he has a lot of blues in the collection.”
This season’s hottest nail colors:
“Autumn, colors with a bit of a twist on it. So an orange would be a fall color, but a twist that would spice it up would be a neon!”
NYFW: Torrid S/S 2018 Collection
The fashion house for plus sized women has some exciting designs in store for the spring.
On September 7, The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) partnered with LIFEWTR for their Spring/Summer 2018 Presentation at NYFW.
Often hailed as the “Queen of the Suit”, Wang Tao didn’t disappoint with her Taoray Wang SS18 presentation. Tao’s second NYFW show was held at the Skylight Clarkson Square Saturday, September 9.
Runa Ray makes her debut at New York Fashion Week with her SS18 Collection.
David Hart presented his spring/summer 2018 collection at the 8th biannual New York Men’s Day held at Dune Studios. Always an exciting show, Hart’s premium hand tailored clothing offers a mix of retro with a modern day flair. This season Hart channeled Cuban tourism or at least the idea of it as inspiration for his collection. As Hart has yet to visit the Caribbean Island for himself. He pulled Cuban references from music, photos, and cinema.
Hart did a fantastic job setting the mood, which was felt as soon as I stepped foot into the room. The runway was lined with Cuban style tiles, there were the palm plants, palm trees, and music to match. The collection was bright, colorful, fresh, and fun. With sharply tailored clothing that we expect as well as sportswear. There were: tropical print short-sleeve shirts, boldly striped blazers, sash-like neck scarves, Panama hats, and bermuda-ish shorts. Pant suits ranged in color from cream, navy, and a sand-like brown. Stand out colors was an orange reminiscent of my grandmother’s favorite sorbet, to a special kind of red that had me thinking of bloody mary cocktails on a white sanded beach. The most memorable look for me, hands down was the mint green suit pants and matching blazer paired with a banana print camp shirt, ¡increíble!
Hart also showed two women’s wear looks that would pair perfectly with the David Hart guy. The ladies wore pleated high-waist pants with tie-off shirts. The beach vibes were felt and I left the show feeling ready to pack my bags and head off to Cuba. For any readers in the US that are feeling the Cuban spirit, you may want to plan a trip sooner than later considering Trump’s plans to pull back on tourism from the US to Cuba.
