On The Scene: HBO Max Original ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ LA Premiere

by Claire Kay Hernandez November 17, 2021
written by Claire Kay Hernandez

On Wednesday November 10th, I attended a special screening for HBO Max’s new original series The Sex Lives of College Girls. The show, created by Mindy Kaling, follows the lives of four roommates as they navigate their newfound freedom on Essex College campus. Executive producers of the show include Mindy Kaling, Justin Noble, and Howard Klein. The show gives a great opportunity for young women in comedy to show their wit in a predominantly male genre.

Our four leading ladies include Alyah Chanelle Scott, Amrit Kaur, Pauline Chalamet, Renee Rapp. All four ladies were glowing on the carpet. Each were dressed in their own unique style, setting them apart from the rest. Their enthusiasm for the screening and party with the cast was over the moon. It felt like a giant college reunion. The girls gave their advice to college aged girls, and shared some of their favorite moments on set without giving away any spoilers.

Other notable cast in attendance included: Midori Francis, Ilia Isorelys Paulino, Renika Williams, Lolo Spencer, Conor Donnaly, Sherri Shepherd, Maya Rose Berko, Vico Ortiz, Charles (Betti) Platt, Scott Lipman, and Mueen Jahan. Terrence Terrell, Denzel Whitaker, Richa Moorjani, BJ Novak, Cinthya Carmona, and Sydney Morgan were also in attendance. Sarah Aubrey, head of Original Content at HBO Max was in attendance for both the screening and after party.

With a packed theater, Mindy and Justin spoke before the screening and thanked everyone involved in the project. They highlighted the efforts of the cast and crew being able to make the vision come to life. On the red carpet, Mindy stated her enthusiasm for the show. She went to college on the east coast and felt that experience wasn’t yet represented in the media. She believed the show to be funny and heartfelt. The Sex Lives of College Girls captures the nuances  of female friendship. More often than not, beginning your college journey there are more losses than wins seemingly. The Sex Lives of College Girls captures that in a lighthearted way.

For Mindy, one of the most important aspects of the show was assembling a writers room full of young women. Being able to bring stories about the college experience in today’s time was vital for the overall relatability of the show. The first episode launched us into the lives of four complex girls who will each have to navigate their social lives in a new school. Overall, the night was filled with immense love and positivity from the cast and all those in attendance. They are extremely proud of the show, and their hard work shines through on screen.

The Sex Lives of College Girls premieres Wednesday November 18th, exclusively on HBO Max.

Exclusive: Kristen Bell & Kirby Howell-Baptiste Talk ‘Queenpins’ [Video]

by Kinsey Schofield September 7, 2021
written by Kinsey Schofield

Have you ever felt flooded with guilt for immediately unsubscribing from a mailing list after utilizing the coupon code that you got for subscribing to their mailing list?

If the answer is yes then expect to experience a rollercoaster of emotions while watching Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste in Queenpins. Queenpins is based on a real-life multimillion-dollar criminal couponing bust that happened in Phoenix, Arizona. (Kirby’s got love for Phoenix, literally! Watch the interview to find out why. ?)

It was a brazen scheme. $25 million in counterfeit coupons. Can they get away with it?

Kristen Bell tells The Knockturnal‘s Kinsey Schofield, this is one of those unique films where you actually end up rooting for the good girls gone bad. She explains, “What excited me so much about the movie was, it is a dream come true to receive a script that the cover page says, ‘Based on true events.’ Because, you know, humanity is often stranger than fiction.”

“By the time they start their illegal empire, you are 100% on the side of the criminals and I think that’s rare that a movie can accomplish that.”

Both certified saints, Kirby and Kristen fess up to teenage naughtiness! “Have you ever taken anything that doesn’t belong to you?” Asks Kinsey, “Yes, not from another person!” insists Kirby. “No, but like, in high school… for sure,” admits Kristen.

“I guess, maybe, because I’m so scared of breaking the rules in real life, that I kind of like doing movies about breaking the rules,” Kristen tells The Knockturnal.

Kirby and Kristen talk Queenpins, Dateline, and dance contests in the interview above. Enjoy!

Queenpins stars Kristen Bell, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Bebe Rexha, Dayo Okeniyi, Joel McHale, Paul Walter Hauser, and Vince Vaughn, and premieres in theaters on September 10th, 2021.

Exclusive: Bebe Rexha Talks ‘Queenpins’ [Video]

by Kinsey Schofield September 7, 2021
written by Kinsey Schofield

Have you ever felt flooded with guilt for immediately unsubscribing from a mailing list after utilizing the coupon code that you got for subscribing to their mailing list?

If the answer is yes then expect to experience a rollercoaster of emotions while watching Bebe Rexha in Queenpins. Queenpins is based on a real-life multimillion-dollar criminal couponing bust that happened in Phoenix, Arizona. Bebe plays Tempe Tina, a hardcore hacker that helps Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptist with their coupon scheme. We probably haven’t seen a hacker this hot since Angelina Jolie in… well… Hackers!

Bebe talked Tempe Tina to The Knockturnal‘s Kinsey Schofield, “Playing this character, she is extremely, like, in your face. She’s all about the business. She’s not trying to waste time, she’s trying to just get straight to the money. Make her money. Do her thing and move right along. That’s what I loved about this character. She’s just super strong, super kick-ass, and it kind of reminds me of the people I was surrounded by in New York. And you know, I’m from New York too. It’s just that energy that I love, so yeah, I love playing a badass chick!”

While Tempe Tina might an identity thief, Bebe likes to play by the rules! “Have you ever stolen something?” asked Kinsey, “Probably when I was younger. I think I stole gum or something from the store and my mom freaked out and like made me bring it back. You know when you were a baby and you would just grab,” admits the award-winning musician. “Other than that, not really! I’m too much of a scaredy-cat to steal something!” “You’re a good girl!” Kinsey reiterates,

Explore manifesting, Juicy Fruit gum, and getting in the car with Tempe Tina aka Bebe Rexha in the interview above.

Queenpins stars Kristen Bell, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Bebe Rexha, Dayo Okeniyi, Joel McHale, Paul Walter Hauser, and Vince Vaughn, and premieres in theaters on September 10th, 2021.

Top 5 Reasons to Go See Merry Wives

by Melissa Edelblum August 14, 2021
written by Melissa Edelblum

After the year and a half+ we all had, we could use a little bit of merriment in our lives. So, without further (much) ado (about nothing) – here are your top 5 reasons to run to see the current production of Merry Wives – this summer’s featured Free Shakespeare in The Park show presented by The Public Theatre.

1.) The diverse and unique perspectives brought to a classic work. Upon being seated, audiences are fully welcomed into the production via a drummer on stage who invites audience members to participate in a series of call and response greetings that are native to various African nations, including Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, among several others.  This warm welcome brings us into the world of modern day South Harlem and sets up the stage perfectly for this witty and fun production of Merry Wives, which is a spin on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor adapted by Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Associate Art Director/Resident Director Saheem Ali. The choices made regarding this production make it clear that this is more than just your average Shakespeare in the park show – this summer’s production is here to honor Black joy, queerness, differences, similarities, heritages of all sorts, and the city itself.

2.) Physical comedy. Mark my words, there is no greater joy than seeing excellent physical comedy in a Shakespeare production. A good physical performance can take the antiquated words from the page and transport them centuries into the future. Overall, the performances were very strong – it was clear that the cast trusted each other and celebrated heritage, the Bard, and each other on that stage. I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out Jacob Ming-Trent, who portrays Falstaff in one of the most innovative and dynamic ways I’ve ever seen – perfectly adapted for a modern audience, but remaining true to iconic joker himself. Comedy gold was shining thru when Madam Nkechi Ford (Emmy nominee, Susan Kelechi Watson) and Madame Ekua Page (Tony nominee, Pascale Armand) play Falstaff’s game and meet him with shenanigans of their own in their element, heightening the confusion and making the encounter all the more enjoyable for the audience.

3.) Lights! Sets! Choreography! Costumes! Where to start. The craftsmanship of Merry Wives was all around outstanding. As mentioned earlier, from the get go, the audience is fully immersed in the world of this contemporary story. The scenic design by Beowulf Boritt and costume design by Dede Ayite focus on the small, but necessary details that make this production realistic and relatable such as Black Lives Matter signage all around the neighborhood and decorated iPhone cases that were used by characters to capture hysterical moments. At the end of the show there, we are transported into a “dream-like” sequence, which utilizes costumes and design in an extremely dynamic way that derives elements from various African cultures, making the scene impactful and emotional not only for Falstaff, but also for the entire theatre. Speaking of the “dream-like” scene, the choreography (by Darrell Grand Moultrie) and fight direction (by Rocío Mendez) were powerful vehicles for physical storytelling throughout the duration of the 110 minute show. The use of movement truly propelled the story in ways that just dialogue did not, we felt more connected to the characters and the emotional journeys they were going on.

4.) Theatre, but make it socially distanced (and vaccinated). Re-acclimating to “normal” life is a challenge in its own right. In addition to being an outdoor production (which is a staple of Shakespeare in the Park whether during a pandemic or not), The Public is requiring proof of vaccination for full capacity seating areas. Upon walking into the Delacorte Theatre, you must wear a mask until you get to your seat and those in physically distanced seating areas do not need to provide proof of negative testing, but those non-vaccinated guests must remain masked at all times. I’ve seen a few productions back at this point and this was by far among the safest I felt. A huge thank you to The Public for taking the initiative to put the safety of so many New Yorkers first.

5.) Merry Wives highlights the beauty of New York City in all its glory! Free Shakespeare in the Park has been a New York City tradition since 1954 and it’s one of the few that continues to strive to make professional theatre relevant to new generations and widely available to diverse audiences. This production is a love letter to New York and shows the world that we’re back and merry, baby!

Free Shakespeare in the Park’s production of Merry Wives as presented by The Public Theatre, is playing at the Delacorte Theatre (81 Central Park West) through September 18th, 2021. For more information, please visit: https://publictheater.org/productions/season/2021/sitp/merry-wives/

HBO Max’s new series, based on the novel of the same name by Alissa Nutting, “Made for Love,” begs the question, if you could read your partner’s mind, would you? The series’ main character Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti) isn’t given much of a choice when her narcissistic, megalomaniac, tech billionaire husband, Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen) implants a chip in her head that allows him to do as such.
