The 2024 Tribeca Festival is underway and we were on the red carpet at the World Premiere of Sacramento, a road-trip comedy directed by and starring Michael Angarano. The film also stars Michael Cera, Kristen Stewart, Maya Erskine, AJ Mendez and Iman Karram.
Sacramento follows Rickey (Michael Angarano) as he forces his best friend Glenn (Michael Cera) to take a spontaneous road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento, California. The film opens with a quick witty scene between Ricky and a woman across the lake named Tallie (Maya Erskine) and then jumps one year later. Rickey tells Glenn the reason for the trip is to scatter his recently deceased father’s ashes, but there is more to the story. At the same time, Glenn is about to be a father to the child of his pregnant wife Rosie (Kristen Stewart). However, he reluctantly agrees to the trip and they make their way to Sacramento in Glenn’s yellow convertible from college that Rickey found and purchased for more than double what Glenn paid for it.
As Rickey and Glenn travel to Sacramento, the film uncovers more about the pair’s friendship and Rickey’s real reason behind the trip. Along the journey, Rickey and Glenn meet best friends and ex-professional fighters, played by Iman Karram, and former WWE wrestler, AJ Mendez, who add spark to an amusing scene at the gym. Once in Sacramento, the audience is reintroduced to Tallie and you can’t help but root for her and Rickey. At the premiere, Michael Angarano said that he wouldn’t have met his wife, Maya Erskine if it weren’t for this film.
Sacramento is a hilarious and heartwarming film about life, loss, friendship, and parenthood. Michael Angarano not only starred in and directed but also co-wrote the film with Chris Smith and gave an outstanding performance as Rickey. Each scene has a purpose in the overall cohesion and themes of the film. Iman was elated that this was the best set she’s ever been on and that “Michael [Angarano] knows how to run a really grounded set.”
Michael Cera was also incredible in the film as an anxiety-ridden Glenn dealing with his own internal struggle. Cera’s comedic but honest delivery in every scene makes for a stand-out performance at this year’s Tribeca Festival.
Sacramento was acquired by Vertical Entertainment shortly before the film premiered at Tribeca.
