The wait is over! Kpop fans can rejoice because SuperM has arrived.
The group that is made up of Taemin from SHINee, EXO’s Baekhyun and Kai, NCT 127’s Taeyong and Mark, and Ten and Lucas of Chinese band WayV are dubbed the “Avengers of Kpop” having sold more than 14 million adjusted albums combined globally and amassed nearly four billion online video views worldwide. Just ahead of the debut for their mini-album ‘SuperM’ and the world premiere for their music video for “Jopping,” the boys hit the pause button to hang out with fans and answer questions in an intimate live-streamed Q&A held at the iconic and legendary Capitol Records building in Hollywood California on October 3rd, 2019.
The premiere event featured the super seven taking questions from fans and the press. When asked about the idea of SuperM and how they felt about it, Baekhyun was quick to answer, ” thought this group would bring out the individuality and the strength of each of us and I thought a lot of people would be curious how we will perform as a group because we came from different groups and also my personal opinion is that Mr. Soo-Man Lee (the group’s producer) is a genius.” Kai also responded, “Taemin and I wondered how the group will be— how would it be working together. Taemin and I knew each other even when we were just trainees, so this is wonderful for us being in the group together. We have a lot of expectations.” Sharing the same sentiments with regards to high expectations, Baekhyun hopes that SuperM will help advance K-pop. Busting out his bilingual skills to the delight of the fan he answered in all English saying we hope to be in ambassadors for Kpop, “We will bring K-pop to the next level. Please look out for us.”
As for what the guys thought of each other when they first started working together, they admitted it wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t challenging either. Kai shared, “the first moment I met the members, you know, I don’t take to strangers very easily, it takes time for me to break the ice, but these members when I met them I liked everyone is really good-looking and everyone is so cute. I felt like I wanted to make friends with these guys. Mark I think is a great singer Taeyong he’s so handsome and Lucas he’s so handsome and tall and Ten is such a great dancer and Taemin is awesome.” Mark added, “I honestly felt like Kai was very surprising… I’ve always seen Kai through videos and his dancing and being on stage and it was kind of hard to approach him at first because he’s such a strong presence, but as I got to know him he’s actually very gentle we actually talk a lot.” Clearly the guys have gotten to know each other quite well to the point of joking with one another. Mark joked about Baekhyun’s unique way of learning choreography. “When it came to learning choreography the person who learns the fastest well, I think we all kind of similar when it comes to speed, but I feel like the most fascinating learner is Baekhyun because Baekhyun, he doesn’t memorize the dances by dancing, he memorizes the dances by watching him.” Being jovial Baekhyun responded with his approval saying, “that’s right, that’s right.”
Now SuperM being the Avengers of Kpop, fans had to asked if the boys want to be in a Marvel movie and if so which one. The always ebullient Ten quickly responded by saying, “I want to play myself in a Marvel movie … so Marvel cast me and I’ll show you”. Taemin also responded he’d liked to be “Captain America— I want to live long.” Baekhyun followed up by saying, “I like Iron Man—Tony Stark— he’s rich and smart, who doesn’t like him. Lucas chimed in saying, “I want to be Black Panther because then I could say ‘SuperM forever.’ Lastly, Taeyong responded, “I like Thor because I hopefully want [to be]vgod of K-pop…that’s me.”
Before the night was over, the guys took a second to talk about their first-ever music video for single “Jopping.” They gave an inside scoop on the concept and the imagery in the music video that focused on strength. Baekhyun remarked that Mark in the video “looked like a warrior” to which Mark said, “We actually used Gladiator as a reference. If you hear the song, we actually added horns to the background of the song to make it seem more mass and if you saw the teaser… you can kind of see the Coliseum. It’s kind of representing us being like Gladiators and warriors on stage performing “Jopping” in front of the world.” He followed up by saying, “We actually haven’t seen the music video…we actually chose not to see it on purpose so that we could see it for the first time with you guys [the fans].” After a few photos, the boys then climbed into the audience to watch the new music video for “Jopping” with their fans.
