It’s far too often that I hear that there’s nothing fun to down in FiDi and that couldn’t be farther from the truth, especially in the Fall. With Oktoberfest in full swing, some of the best places to celebrate are downtown in the Financial District.
If you’re fresh out of college and want to wade your way through a crowd of recent frat bros and sorority sisters, Stone street is more than a welcome retreat. However, if you’re not just over the hill of 21 and looking for a great time, one of your best bets in New York is Sixpoint Brewery. Just a weekend back, I was able to join them for Oktoberfest and it was a blast.
To start, we of course had to try their latest seasonal beer just in time for Oktoberfest: Märzen Lager. It was crisp, refreshing, and tasted like the perfect fall beer. We had also tried a pumpkin-spiced beer which delightfully surprised both of us considering neither of us liked pumpkin spice as a whole. It was sweet, creamy, and warm – like a pumpkin spice latte that fit snuggly into the body of a beer.
Next, we had the Spatzle – a german egg noodle dish made with resin mustard, hot honey sauce, and pickled red onion. It was wonderfully prepared and filled with strong but not overwhelming mustard flavor.
After that, we had the Bratwurst, which was made with resin sauerkraut, resin mustard, and pickled jalapeños, all on a hoagie roll. This was great and is exactly the type of greasy food you want to have while downing a great beer. To top it all off, it came with fries that had no business being as good as they were.
Then came the Braised Pork which was served with resin sauerkraut, spatula, pickled vegetables, and resin mustard. This dish also came with a side of spatzle which was great. Once again, I had all of these at a brewery and I was surprised by how good this was. The pork was soft and could melt in your mouth. Pair that with the strong mustard flavor of the sides and it made for a very solid dish.
To top it all off, we had the “impossible cake” and I really agree with that moniker. This amalgam was a combination of chocolate cake and flan, served with a drizzle of caramel sauce. It was like having two separate cakes at the same time which was
Visiting Sixpoint Brewery for Oktoberfest was a refreshing change. Unlike other bars and breweries that are loud, overcrowded, dark, and sometimes unwelcoming, Sixpoint Brewery was bright, spacious and surprisingly homey. Regardless of the time of year, they’re worth checking out and paying a visit to, whether for a bite or for a drink while watching the game.
