On May 5, merging singer-songwriter Sadie Jean released her new pop single “Just Because.” Griff Clawson, Shy Martin, and Jean co-wrote the track. The song explored the complexities of young love and fit on a sad-girl playlist. The rest of Jean’s discography had similar themes.
Her previous smash hit, “Locksmith” received over 60 million worldwide streams. It appeared in almost every top Apple Music pop playlist. Her other single, “WYD Now?” received a RIAA Gold certification. Rapper Rod Wave sampled the song. “Just Because” already received over 4.5 million views and 1,500 recreations on TikTok. As Jean navigated love and life as a young woman, her latest track was a perfect follow-up.

The Knockturnal: What was your vision behind your new single?
Sadie Jean: When I wrote “Just Because” I wanted to convey the confusing and paradoxical state of emotion that happens in between heartbreak and healing. I wrote this to remind myself that it’s okay to miss someone and also still understand I deserve so much better.
The Knockturnal: Can you describe your songwriting process?
Sadie Jean: This particular song I got to write with my friends Griff Clawson and Shy Martin. It started with me ranting about all of my emotions and then I think I said something along the lines of “just because I miss him doesn’t mean I want him back” and then from there the song kind of just happened. It’s like magic! It’s kind of hard to explain.
The Knockturnal: How have collaborations with other artists inspired you?
Sadie Jean: I loved writing this song with Shy Martin and Griff Clawson because I’m a huge fan of both of their artistic projects. I have such respect and trust in them which made the writing process so effortless and enjoyable.
The Knockturnal: What instruments do you use in this song and why?
Sadie Jean: This song is mainly guitar driven. There’s a folky pop vibe to it that I’m so drawn to and adds to the emotion of it while also driving so much movement. It sounds motivating and sad which is exactly how the day felt.
The Knockturnal: Why did you choose the title “Just Because?”
Sadie Jean: There’s a lot of repetition in this song, especially with the phrase “just because.” It’s so playful but also (when you listen in context with the rest of the lyrics) very deep, which is a fun contrast.
The Knockturnal: Can you talk about any in-progress songs?
Sadie Jean: I’m finishing up a bunch of my favorite songs I’ve ever written right now and I’m so, so, so excited for them to be out in the world soon.
