Luke James threw a concert at the Roxy in Hollywood on June 30.
The two-time Grammy nominated singer, sang songs from his self-titled album Luke James (2014) and his mixtape, Whispers in the Dark (2012). Singer Snoh Aalegra opened the show. The room faded to black as the curtains spread open and then blue strobe lights and fog illuminated the stage. As the beat dropped, the crowd screamed with anticipation. Luke James appeared center stage in full swing, singing a cover of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel”. Wearing a leather jacket, white tee and baseball cap, he pranced around stage getting the crowd hyped.
When singing “Exposé,” he paused and addressed the audience. He said, “Look to your neighbor and say ‘Baby, don’t fight the feeling,’ highlighting the bridge of the song and encouraging everyone to dance. With an 80s’ electric vibe, you couldn’t help moving your feet.
In James’ song “Options” the outro stood out. He sang, “So maybe taking life is not a option/ Oh no no no baby”. He then made it a point of telling the audience how important it is to love yourself. As if that wasn’t heartfelt enough, he began to pass out roses to women in the front row. Ooh’s and aah’s filled the room along with screaming from the girls who received the roses. He then noted that he was a “classic man” and then it all made sense, he couldn’t help but be a heartthrob.
James ended the concert performing his classic radio hit, “I Want You” which left the audience anxious, craving for more. His exceptional voice range and pitch make him distinct from other R&B artists. His soulful voice and meaningful lyrics will turn any genuine music lover into an immediate fan.
