On Thursday September 1st, 2016 the global leader in music rights management BMI, celebrated over 75 years of service, Hip-Hop and R&B, and the talented Toni Braxton.
Thursday evening The Knockturnal attended the 2016 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia. BMI also awarded Toni Braxton with the most valuable award of the evening, the BMI Presidents Award, recognizing her tremendous achievements as a singer/Songwriter.
Actor/comedian Chris Tucker, BMI president Mike O’Neill, and vice president Catherine Brewton hosted this year’s ceremony. Dj Khaled opened the show with Ludacris, performing “ALL I DO IS WIN” followed by Kent Jones and his hit new single “DON’T MIND”. After Kent, Rich Homie Quan murdered the stage in his suit performing “Type of Way” and “Flex”. Last but not least Award recipient Rae Sremmurd performed “No Type” and blessed us with a new song “Black Beatles”.
In addition to the 35 most performed R&B/Hip-Hop songs that were named and recognized Ben “Billions” Diehl and Southside won for Top Producer. Metro Boomin took home the producer of the Year award, while Universal Music Publishing Group won the publisher of the year Award. Charlie Puth And Wiz Khalifa Won Song of the Year for “ See You Again”
After all awards were given out, a beautiful musical tribute to Toni Braxton including Toni Braxton performing closed the show! Yolanda Adams SLAYED “Un-Break my heart”, I lived for Ledisi’s version of “Seven Whole Days”, the Braxton sister’s “Breathe Again”, and Donald Lawrence’s “You Mean The World To Me”. L.A. Reid introduced and invited the honoree herself to sing, “How Many Ways” and my favorite “He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me.”
It was great honoring the artists that are behind the scenes as well as on stage. Additional legends in attendance included Mannie Fresh, Bobby Valentino, Cee Lo Green, Keke Wyatt, and Drumma boy.
The event was sponsored by the Swisher Sweets Artist Project which increases awareness and exposure for emerging musical talent.
