The new drama tackles issues of corruption and morality of the police department in a fictional town.
In the new Netflix film, Rebel Ridge, Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) travels to the town of Shelby Springs. He is on a simple mission: bail his cousin out of jail and start living a simple life. However, the local police force has other plans for Richmond when they believe his bail money is suspicious.
Actor Aaron Pierre stars as Richmond and describes how the police’s involvement becomes a problem for his character’s progression toward his ideal life.
“He enters this town and his sole intention with his life savings that he’s withdrawn from his account is to post bail for his cousin,” said Pierre. “And then for him and his cousin to live a simple, peaceful, stress free, somewhat remote life, just hauling boats,” said Pierre.
“And I think what happens is this one moment of civil asset forfeiture derails that whole dream, derails that whole vision,” said Pierre.
Throughout the film, there are exciting action sequences and suspense, all while Richmond is actively trying to seek justice for his cousin. During this time he meets Summer McBride (Anna Sophia Robb) who decides to team up with Richmond to solve the case.
However, McBride is struggling with her own life as a felon and single mother.
“I thought it was so satisfying and exhilarating to play a character that has so much on the line, so much to lose,” said Robb. ” She’s just trying to get her life back on track when she meets Terry and she wants to help him,” said Robb.
“She’s trying to do the right thing, but at a certain point she has to make a decision,” said Robb. “Is she going to turn a blind eye? Is she gonna keep taking care of herself and her own business? ,” said Robb. “Or is she going to risk everything and put it all on the line to do what is right, not only in her own heart and to help Terry, but also for the betterment of her community,” said Robb.
Rebel Ridge will stream on Netflix on September 6.
