For Timo Weiland, this year was all about experimentation.
When it came to Fashion Week’s newest project “See Now, Buy Now,” which allows fashionistas to buy clothing right off the runway instead of waiting until next season, Weiland went all out. On Sunday morning, the designer hosted his latest presentation at Samsung 837, a three-story “digital playground” in NYC’s Meatpacking District.
The new space has played host to dozens of events and installations since it opened in February, including other fashion shows, debuts, and concerts throughout the summer. The lab, which is open to the public, blends technology with culture, hosting events to a background of Samsung products that guests can test out and play with. “Samsung is constantly innovating to enhance how people can enjoy the things they love, and NYFW is no exception,” Samsung VP/GM Zach Overton told The Daily Front Row. “We like to think of 837 as the un-fashion week destination, democratizing the industry’s biggest events by providing guests with access to fashion and beauty’s major moments.”
Sunday’s show opened with saxophonist Jeremy Danneman performing “Autumn in New York” as a tribute to the 15th anniversary of 9/11. Behind him, Samsung’s 837 three-story screen featured art by Adad Hannah. Notable attendees included Kelly Bensimon, Mayer Hawthorne, and Leigh Lezark. Once Danneman had finished, guests were invited to view the collection from all different angles and heights, and make their way down to the first story where they were able to view the fashions close up.
Weiland’s presentation brought us back to the ’90s. Makeup was fresh and natural while hair was pulled up into top knots with scrunchies. The looks were relaxed, wearable separates perfect for fall. Animal prints abounded mixed with oversized dresses.
Highlights included a dark animal print sweater over a blue mini, an oversized black dot maxi dress over a white and black polo, and purple tiger print pants paired with a purple silk top.
And the best part? Most of the collection is now available in the CFDA Retail Lab.
