Dishing out $10,000 to 10 artists, for their raw talent and hard work, this year‘s BRIC After Dark Gala party honored the recipients of the 2019 Colene Brown art award!

After an inaugural dinner on Thursday, November 7th, The Knockdown Center turned into a festive fundraising dance party in honor of the winners; Manuel Acevedo, Nicole Awai, Xenobia Bailey, Nona Faustine, Alicia Grullón, Baseera Khan, Heidi Lau, Christopher Myers, Judith Simonian, and Kennedy Yanko. Congratulations!

For over 40 unapologetic years, BRIC (made popular by the show BCAT in the early 2000’s) has dedicated its existence to supporting the community in countless ways. From providing access to equipment, visual arts, education, and media, to being an intimate home for award-winning filmmakers, and artists. With deep respect and fascination for representing the unheard expressions of the people, BRIC has become the #1 not for profit Arts and media institute in BROOKLYN!
Under the disco ball DJ MOMA played his sets like a pro with the latest mix of popular world music, marking an unforgettable night, by energizing, inspired new endeavors! With plenty of social media photo opportunities, The 2019 Gala Party featured an art gallery style installation curated by BRIC featuring artwork by Johannah Herr. The stay-fresh corner was occupied by pop up barber Greg Purnell and a once in a lifetime chance to be photographed by Barron Claiborne! He is the photographer who captured the iconic “King of New York” headshot of the late great rapper Biggie Smalls! In addition to a surprise performance from the famous Urban Bush Women, the night ended surrounding guests in piñata confetti refreshments, streamers, and wall to wall art. The proceeds raised from art sales will go back into funding programs, prize winners, and future BRIC projects. When you think of BRIC, think of expressions for Brooklyn by Brooklyn. Be sure to tell Brooklyn your story!
