Deon Taylor’s “Fatale” premiered on December 18, 2020. The thriller follows the domino effect of events after a married man has a one-night affair with a detective and finds himself centered in her investigation. The Knockturnal attended a virtual premiere of the film which is now available On Demand.
According to Deon Taylor, the role of Detective Val Quinlan was made with Hilary Swank in mind. It is a type of complex character that the two-time Academy Award winner hasn’t portrayed before. Director Deon Taylor during a Q&A session mentions the fact that prior to filming Hilary Swank hadn’t known who Michael Ealy was but he {Michael Ealy} knew her. Though Ealy is considered an icon in most Black households he and Swank have two different audiences. Hollywood is segregated not just in who makes the films but also by who watches them. Deon Taylor pointed out that there are two separate Hollywoods with different A-listers and icons and the film in many ways unites the two by casting Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy as the leading roles.
Hilary Swank applauded Taylor for being able to accomplish so much within an independent film and within a low budget. There was a significant amount of thought and care into how the film was shot, the color palette of the film, who was in the film, and how the characters’ lives intertwined. Cinematographer Dante Spinotti, who shot Mindhunter, focused on symbolism, color, distance, and camera angles in order to capture the vision of the script effectively.
Fatale is more than just a thriller, it’s a film that brought together a diverse group of actors and crew members who came together for the film. The film offers escapism, nail-biting suspense, and unites audiences even from home.
