A touching bond between two grandmothers blossoms into an Oscar-nominated short film, “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó.” Directed by Sean Wang and produced by Sam Davis, this heartwarming story celebrates their vibrant spirits, proving that aging is beautiful.

Just in time for Lunar New Year, this 17-minute documentary captures the lives of Wang’s grandmothers, Yi Yan Fuei and Zhang Li Hua, who radiate youthful energy despite their years. Through playful moments like farts, arm wrestles and sword fights, they share a joyful connection with their grandson, reminding us of the precious relationships with older figures in our lives.

Flashbacks taken from old video tapes blend past and present, cherishing cherished memories while embracing new ones. This heartfelt film paints a beautiful picture of aging – one filled with laughter, connection and the enduring beauty of life.

The premiere celebration echoed the film’s spirit. Red and yellow lanterns glowed, calligraphy in Mandarin by Jojo’s Calligraphy, and the grandmothers enjoyed their favorite pastime – playing Mahjong. Delicious vendors served up authentic Taiwanese dishes, from Lu Rou Fan from Golden Leaf to bubble tea from Bopo Mofo, completing the immersive vendor experience brought by MAMA’s Night Market.

Celebrate the New Year by watching “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó” on Disney+ and Hulu, cherish your elders and embrace the joy that comes with every stage of life.
