Buffalo Nichols Brings His Life Journey To The BMI Lollapalooza Stage With A Raw & Powerful Performance

by Emerson Unger August 4, 2022
written by Emerson Unger

@buffalonicholsmusic

Life can teach you many lessons, even ones that you don’t want to learn, but for rhythm and blues singer/ songwriter, Buffalo Nichols has taken those life challenges and channeled them into a brutally honest and authentic hard-working music career. Better or for worse, married to the music as well as his guitar, Nichols has traveled the globe from Milwaukee to West Africa to Texas and Europe with the mission to turn an artist’s dream into reality and bring blues music into the future by putting stories of black Americans back into folk music.

His latest stop on his journey has brought him to the iconic Lollapalooza BMI stage. In front of a packed audience of young and old and every color, Nichols sang his heart out. A company just by his guitar and a drummer, he held the audience’s soul in the palm of his hand. With the audience hanging on his every word, he admits his captivating stage presence is not one that he developed overnight. “It’s definitely learned and not natural,” he said. It’s evident that his undeniable stage presence has been one that has been earned through years of setbacks, challenges, and strife culminating in an excruciating pressure that only develops the world’s rarest gems.

As for his music, it seems to have hit a cord with the masses given the pain brought on by the pandemic. He acknowledges with songs like “Living In Hell,” his music has been resonating with more and more people, “I think… a lot of people were trying to escape from the darkness of the last two years, but I think a lot of people are giving into it…not in a negative way but just accepting it. I think that’s why people come to my music.”

Accepting one’s fake can be a love and hate relationship, which is something he can identify with when it comes to his guitar. “It means everything and nothing,” he says about his six strings. “I tried so hard not to play guitar and do something else with my life, but it just [keeps] calling me back,” he admits. “I love it; it’s ruined my life and saved my life,” he said.

As for the next chapter on Nichols’s Journey, well he’s back on the road. His next stop will be AMERICANAFEST before heading to New York, New Jersey, Kentucky, Texas, and Little Rock Arkansas.

Peter CottonTale, Chance the Rapper and BMI Make History at Lollapalooza With Gospel Performance

by Emerson Unger August 1, 2022
written by Emerson Unger

Courtesy of @realcottontale

“I’m from Chicago, the birthplace of gospel” and with those words music producer and composer turned performer, Peter CottonTale, made history at this year’s BMI Stage at Chicago’s Lollapalooza. Now, the iconic and legendary BMI stage at Lollapalooza is known for supporting emerging, up-and-coming as well as established artists. The stage has been home to acts like Neon Trees, Elle King, and even Lady Gaga.

However, this year’s performance with Peter CottonTale was certainly history-making. At the beginning of his set, he acknowledged the fact that like himself, Chicago, was the birthplace of gospel. He added it was funny that Chicago’s most iconic music festival had never had a gospel performance before. To a packed crowd he joked if those in attendance didn’t get a chance to make it to church today well church is coming to you.

He began his set accompanied by a choir with the song, “God is Love,” before performing “Hi-5,” “He is Real,” and “I Want to Thank You.” He rounded out the first part of his set with his collaboration with the mega-church Hillsong for the songs, “As I Am” and “Grateful/Together.”

Not missing the opportunity to collaborate with some of his famous friends and those he admires, Peter CottonTale was then joined on stage by Reese for the guitar and keyboard-driven song “Do Your Thing.” CottonTale followed that performance up with the toe-tapping and uplifting  “When I Get There,” with Jamila. He rounded out this part of the set with Joey performing “Don’t Leave” and then “Give It Up to God.” He also teamed up with Vic Mensa for “No Worries” as well as Tiff Joy for “Feels Like Church.”

Then to the crowd’s delight, the versatile Gammy-winning artist, CottonTale, called on an old friend to come by and help him uplift the crowd during this historic event. CottonTale tapped his decade-long friend and Chicago’s son, Chance the Rapper, to help him deliver powerful renditions of “Pray for Real” and “Forever Always.” Chance the Rapper called out to the crowd numerous times to show his love and support.

At the end of the show, the 15+ performers all headed backstage to commemorate this historic moment. It’s during this time that we caught up with the one the only Chance the Rapper, who expressed what the moment meant to him. “It’s amazing,” Chance acknowledged about the moment. He added, “it’s a blessing [especially on a Sunday], absolutely!”

Tomorrow X Together Returns To NYC For ACT: LOVESICK Tour

by Emerson Unger July 11, 2022
written by Emerson Unger

It’s been almost 3 years since Tomorrow X Together, or TXT,  made their NYC debut at the Time Square showcase. During that show the boys, Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun and HueningKai, showed off their individual talents and skills that their label Big Hit Music so rightly scouted and tapped. Now, the boys returned once again to the Big Apple, but this time to showcase their evolution as a cohesive group as well as share the love with their super fans, MOA. The performance certainly showcased how much the boys had really missed performing in front of their fans.

The second USA stop on their first world tour, ACT: LOVESICK, kicked off in Madison Square Garden’s Hulu theater in NYC on July 9. The show began with a quick video intro that highlighted the wonderment, mystery and self-exploration that TXT has become known for and those sentiments were mirrored throughout the show. Fog filled the theater as the boys emerged on to the stage for a powerful and emotional rendition of their hit song, “0X1=Lovesong (I Know I Love You).” As the boys performed the song they were surrounded by huge movable LED lighted performance panels that shared images of blue ice and pink jewels that chilled the audience and warmed the soul. The performance had an extended choreo and highlighted how the boys have evolved not only as vocalists and dancers but as a unit and cohesive group moving as one to convey strong and powerful emotions.

TXT then performed “Wishlist” and “Blue Orangeade,” before taking a break to chat with fans. The opening set of songs was chocked full of cuteness and charms as well as vibrant colors and flavorful fruit imagery. It literally was positivity overload. One might think that it was the end of the show given how joyful it was, but for TXT it was just the beginning. The group loved getting feedback from their MOA on their performance of “Blue Orangeade.” It was obvious that the group was delighted to be back in the presence of their American MOA after such a long break from performing in the US.

It was evident that the boys really enjoyed performing in front of the crowd as they chatted with fans. Yeonjun admitted that the boys really mold over what songs they would perform and wanted to highlight and show off songs that had never been seen before on American soil. He admitted the group wrecked their brains picking out songs. The boys went on to perform their upbeat English song, “Magic” and jumped off the stage and walked amongst the crowd to perform “Ghosting,” while shaking hands, waving, and taking pictures. The moment was so magical and intense that even the in-house camera crew couldn’t keep track of the boys as they became one and merged with Moa.

The boys continued with a new set that was certainly rocking as they were decked out in vintage T-shirts that highlighted groups like Nirvana, AC/DC, and the Rolling Stones. They performed in front of yellow caution tape graphics to begin this set with “New Rules” and then “PUMA” as well as “Balance Game. The boys finish the set by climbing onto a Jeep for “Lo$er=Lover” and “Trust Fund Baby.” As the crowd sang a long, Taehyun’s vocal prowess was on full display for these performances as the boys lit up the starry night backdrop just as if the boys were inviting the audience to a warm campfire glowing on the summer night.

After a video break, the boys return to the stage decked out in Sailor Moon-inspired shirts to perform classic monster hits songs like “Crown,” “9 and Three Quarters (Run Away)” and “Blue Hour” as well as an emotional rendition of “Magic Island.” It was clearly evident that the boys really had matured when it came to their stage presence and ability to perform. Their craftsmanship was on full display along with their development as artists but what really set the tone for the show was how much the boys truly missed and delighted with interacting with their fans.

After a short video break, the guys changed into another outfit that mirrored this set’s darker tone. With a wicked red forest behind the guys and wearing white and black outfits, they performed, “Frost,” “Maze in the Mirror,” and an epic performance of “Eternally.” The boys then stopped to chat with fans and share how much it meant to them to perform “Eternally.”

For the next set, the boys continue down a path of exploration and are not afraid to confront their Darkside with songs like “Can’t You See Me? (Rock remix)” and “Opening Sequence.” They were clad in blue and black outfits. For this set long gone was the cheerful music that had started the show. Now the boys took on dark imagery with authentic emotional expression. Then only Yeonjun and Hueningkai stayed on stage to perform their song, “Lonely Boy” as TXT’s first subunit. After this song, all the boys united on stage to kid and tease Yeonjun and Hueningkai about their song. After some funny jabs, the whole group performed a touching rendition of “Anti-Romantic.”  They finished out this set with their current chart-topping hit, “Good Boy Gone Bad.”

As the boys disappeared off stage fans were left wanting more which of course TXT delivered. For their encore performances they performed “Thursday’s Child Has Far To Go” and “MOA Diary (Dubaddu Wari Wari)” and  “Sweat.” During their performance of “MOA Diary (Dubaddu Wari Wari)” fans were asked to hold up signs sharing how much they loved the boys of TXT. The boys seem generally touched by this moment.

It was clear from the show, that the boys took the audience on a journey, not only of their own development as artists but as young adults maturing into adulthood. The show started with warm, upbeat, cheerful, and innocent songs that only TXT can deliver to the world of K-pop, but eventually morphed into a much darker moodier, and more authentic tone with songs that the group has become known for. However, the most touching part of the entire concert was seeing how much the boys delighted in seeing, entertaining, and connecting with their fans that they had clearly been longing for and waiting to entertain.

Tomorrow X Together and the ACT: LOVESICK tour will continue in the US for the rest of this month before TXT heads overseas. Their North American dates are as follows:

Exclusive: Eloise Alterman Talks New EP “Sad Bird”

by Sydney Hargrove May 6, 2022
written by Sydney Hargrove

Earlier this month, we witnessed singer Eloise Alterman perform songs from her all new EP Sad Bird, out today on all streaming platforms! We were completely moved by the conversations and the stories that Eloise tells throughout her immersive music style, and it was wonderful to hear her talk about these songs in addition to performing them. We sat down with Eloise to talk all about the new EP, check out the conversation below!

The Knockturnal: Eloise, how are you?

Eloise Alterman: I’m good. How are you?

The Knockturnal: So to start us out, you  wrote most of this music during the pandemic. What was that  process like?

Eloise Alterman: It was definitely very weird for me in the beginning because I’m so  good in a room with other people and when you can really connect. Most of the time for writes, too, you sit down with people and you  kind of talk about where you are in life before diving into an idea.  And with writing for this EP, you sit on Zoom and it was immediately  like, “ok what’s everyone’s ideas?” We’re all just stuck in our  apartments just trying to make sense of it all. But the great thing  about it was that I was able to write with people I never would’ve  written with – oversees, people in London, one guy in Sweden. It gave such an opportunity to work with so many other creatives. And  I really enjoyed that.

The Knockturnal: I love that. You have such insightful things to say about all of your  music. You were talking about 4AM and you said it was that period  in time where it doesn’t feel like morning or night. Can you walk me  through some of the creative processes behind your lyrics?

Eloise Alterman: Yea, so with “4 in the Morning,” I had written after I had felt that  about that weird time of day. Trying to get over someone I think is one of the most difficult things to do, as we know. And for me, I need to take a second and step back and check in with myself  usually to understand exactly how I’m feeling about something  before writing about it. And I think with lyrics, they have to be so  concise. If you think about it, you can have a million feelings but try  to fit it into one sentence or two minutes or something. But I usually start with a notebook and I just will free-write for a long time. It’ll just  be random thoughts, random titles, and they won’t even have  meaning behind them sometimes. But then once I go into a room  with another co-writer, I’ll speak them out loud and they’ll say, “what  does that mean to you?” and it’ll just come to me.

The Knockturnal: I really love that. Now tell me a little bit about your music video. What can viewers expect to see in it and what are you trying to channel?

Eloise Alterman: I mean, the song is pretty self-explanatory. I was in love with someone who was in love with someone else still. And we were together and it was really difficult on me. I had never experienced jealousy like that and also changing how I viewed myself. It was kind of this unraveling that happened out of nowhere while loving him and while watching him still be in love with someone else. I  wanted the music video to really, really encompass that, instead of  tell a story of the girl and the guy and the fight and all that kind of  stuff that’s so surface level, when what was really happening was I  was falling apart on the inside but trying to keep it together on the outside. And so, I wanted to create a really beautiful dreamlike world that started to go darker and darker as the music video went  on and show how easy it is to pretty much just unravel in front of someone.

The Knockturnal: That’s incredible. What was the filming process like?

Eloise Alterman: It was a crazy day. It was really fun, though. It was my first music video, but… it was on the beach in Malibu. An early set time. We also were doing the photo shoot for the EP, so in between takes we  were doing a photoshoot, as well. So it was quite stressful. But I actually thrive off of stressful environments, but the first two takes I  was just like, “okay.” I think I kind of got settled into what felt good and it honestly was just really enjoyable to be at the beach all day long and experience what a hustle it really is to get through that long of a day videotaping yourself all day long. Lots of cameras on  you – that‘s something I was not used to – but good thing for a glam team that’s got you in check the whole time. So yea, it was a  really cool experience.

The Knockturnal: Absolutely. You’ve been writing all these songs for a while. How long has the EP been in the works for?

Eloise Alterman: So I’ve been writing the songs for about two years. The EP was  originally supposed to be an album when I signed, and so I wrote it  as an album. But as we were talking – as a new artist, too – and with people’s attention’s spans, especially breaking through in the beginning, I didn’t know if I wanted to come out with a huge project  of songs. I think some of them could get lost within each other. And  so we came up with “The Hurting Phase” being the first phase. That’s what I was really feeling in the beginning of heartache. The process since then has kind of just been… my favorite part is the creative part after the writing, you know? Coming up with the cover and kind of what I want to come across and picking the songs for it, too. Going through and remembering the order I’d written them in and staying true to that because I don’t want to put songs on there  when I was starting to feel even a little bit better. This EP is supposed to really encompass the roller coaster in the beginning of  feeling really sad.

The Knockturnal: Speaking of roller coasters – just from talking to people today,  hearing what people have had to say about you, about the set and  everything – so many people are so excited for your music and you’re starting to get a lot of attention. How does that feel? What are those emotions like?

Eloise Alterman: It makes me feel really, really special. And it’s such an interesting feeling. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt like this in my life before. But, you know, life is hard as a teenager, and middle school and even just moving to Nashville and not feeling special in so many different  phases of my life. It’s so weird now to have all these people who care a lot about you but also care a lot about your career. It really does take a team and I would not be able to be doing any of it without… I mean, there’s so many hands on deck with just even getting this music out. And being able to have that weight lifted  where I can focus on the writing and the stuff I’m actually good at instead of the business side and all that. But it’s really crazy to look  around and be like, all these people are like, it’s like having a family a little bit. Just a support team. It also makes me more creative. Because when you know you can bounce ideas off people, there’s  someone to listen to you all the time. I love it.
