The fan favorite awards shows had surprises in store for viewers.
The 2016 MTV Movie Awards took place last night on Saturday, April 9th. The show was held on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. Kevin Hart and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson were the hosts of the 25th annual awards show. The show aired tonight, Sunday, April 10th, at 8 pm.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens won multiple awards including Movie of the Year, Best Villian (Adam Driver), and Breakthrough Performance (Daisy Ridley). Ryan Reynolds won two awards for his work in Deadpool. The star won the awards for Best Comedic Performance and Best Fight. His wins were highlighted by a surprise performance from Salt N Pepa of their song “Shoop.” The stars of Pitch Perfect 2 also walked away with awards for Best Kiss (Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine) and Ensemble Cast.
Chris Pratt took home the awards for Best Male Performance and Best Action Performance for Jurassic World. Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence, and Amy Poehler were also winners for their work in Mad Max: Fury Road, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 2, and Inside Out. The cast of Straight Outta Compton walked away with the True Story Award.
Melissa McCarthy was awarded the Comedic Genius Award and in typical McCarthy fashion accepted the award by way of crowd surfing. Will Smith was awarded the Generation Award for his work in film. Lonely Island paid tribute to the actor by singing a medley of Smith’s songs including “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” theme song, “Men In Black,” and “Gettin’ Jiggy With It.” Ariana Grande and Halsey also performed during the awards show. Grande sang her single “Dangerous Woman” and Halsey performed her song “Castle.”
