Michael Christmas is about ready to flip the mattress on the rap game.
His last project Is This Art? wasn’t a flawless album, but it carried a healthy amount of character with it. Michael’s personality and concepts are very likable and as time has passed, he’s become more of a formidable emcee.
This is further proved by the single he’s dropped along with announcement of his new album What a Weird Day (available for pre-order here). The track, “Are You Around”, is built over a muddy bass with a drum line that belongs in a smoke filled lounge. Michael Christmas takes this very classy and production and rolls out some very proletarian verses. The content isn’t necessarily different from what could be found on Is This Art? but his delivery and flow have greatly improved, and to be perfectly honest his goofball/dorky content is entirely enjoyable. Michael breathes a type of honesty that doesn’t feel forced making it all the more genuine.
This single gives me a lot of hope for What a Weird Day. Knowing Christmas, I can already assume it will be a good project, but “Are You Around” has planted the potential for this to be an amazing project and one that will put his foot in the door for major label recognition.
