Melissa Barrera and Paul Mescal star in the film Carmen directed by Benjamin Millepied.
The film follows Carmen, played by Barrera, who’s a young girl forced to leave her home in Mexico after her mother is brutally murdered. She survives the rough and strenuous task of crossing the border into the U.S. but is soon confronted by a border guard and his patrol partner, Aidan, played by Mescal. A deadly standoff between the two eventually leads to Carmen and Aiden escaping together. They head north toward Los Angeles and begin the search for Carmen’s mother’s best friend Masilda. As the movie progresses, viewers can see the connection between Aiden and Carmen grow as they find solace in their love for one another.
Carmen is a reimagined version of the 1875 George Bizet opera. The film takes a unique twist on the concept of love and tragedy by incorporating various artistic elements that help enhance the story. The Knockturnal spoke with Barrera and Millepied about the film and what they hope viewers will take from it. Millpied also discussed the overall concept and his experience directing his first film.
Carmen will be available in theaters in New York and Los Angeles beginning April 21st.
