Sixteen freestyle rappers battled it out in Miami this past weekend for the Red Bull Batalla Regional Qualifier, testing their quick wits and killer lines for a chance to make it to the world stage and take home the title of best freestyler in the Spanish rap world.
In a bracket-style tournament, contestants from around the country showcased their word strengths in the world’s largest freestyle competition. Miami was the last of three Red Bull regional qualifiers– the other two occurring in Los Angeles in July and Houston in August– with the winners of each heading to the National Final in Dallas in November.
The winner of the National Final not only will be named the best Spanish-speaking freestyler in the country, but will test their chops with top MCs in the Red Bull Batalla World Final, taking place in Bogotá, Colombia on December 2.
Emcees for the competition were comprised of the following artists: JD, Link One, El Domi, Sourius, Jay_Co “El León”, Vnz, BAN2, AdonysX, Zeu, Knnon, Mike, Adonys, Freites, Crown, Levi, and VersoMC.
The competition opened with a competition of its own, with two Secret Walls teams fighting against the clock to create the best emcee-inspired painting, made up of artists Ruth Burotte Tamfee (@rutamfi) and Marlon Pruz (@marlonpruz) against @chnkfondue and @zoegen.
Following the paintings’ unveiling, co-hosts Racso White Lion and Sonja La Makina invited the 16 competitors onstage to face an empty 16-slotted bracket. Picking their names out of a hat, the MCs themselves were able to place when they would take the mic onstage– and who strategically they would go up against.
As if the actual rapping wasn’t gripping enough, this proved to be quite a jaw-dropping face-off no one could have predicted. With certain slots empty and certain heavyweights waiting for their names to be called, a bracket was decided: up first, Link One vs. Zeu; followed by AdonysX vs. Mike; Vnz vs. Sourius; Jay_Co “El Leon” vs. VersoMC; JD vs. Crown; Adonys vs. El Domi; Freites vs. Knnon; and Levi vs. BAN2.
Freestyling in front of judges for the competition– and hip hop giants– MC Snow, Chester and Sara Socas, and with DJ Cesar providing the backdrop for the MCs, the following freestylers eked it out to make it to the quarter-finals: Link One vs. AdonysX; Sourius vs. VersoMC; JD vs. Adonys; and Freites vs. BAN2.
As the lines got wilder, so did the fans, and the special guest cameo from El Misionero hyped people up some more. Then it came down to the final four: AdonysX vs. Verso and Freites vs. JD. With the crowd reacting and with the judges often ruling a tie and forcing the contestants to go at it again, JD and AdonysX were left in the final two.
In a thrilling back and forth held on the ramp of a literal halfpipe at Skatebird skate park, Venezuelan-born AdonysX came out victorious over JD and claimed his spot in the National Final, with last year’s Red Bull Batalla USA Champion OneR bringing out the Red Bull red, yellow and blue mic-shaped trophy. The Knockturnal caught up with AdonysX after his win and spoke with JD and several other contestants before the Batalla to see what their creative process is like, and what it meant for them to be at the qualifier. Read our interviews with AdonysX, JD and Crown below, read our other interviews with Jay_Co “El Leon” and Link One here, and check out more of our coverage of the Batalla here.

Me siento increíble.
I actually feel amazing. As I repeat, I have no words to describe this emotion. It’s something very exciting, it’s something shocking. It’s like seeing my mother, that I haven’t seen her for three years, would be such a feeling of happiness to describe or get an example, because it’s something magical, magical. The word is magical, the word is magical, it is something unique, unique. I mean, I have no words, it’s something great. I feel very happy about this.
Actually, as a rapper, one of the things I like the most is fluidity, flow. I love listening to the beats, connecting with the beat. And I don’t know, I think I have that gift, thank God, that as I flow on the track, the words come. It’s like my brain orders, orders those words and I just have to get the filling, but the words already come in sequence in my brain and it’s very easy for me to connect with many words and after fluency comes the rest.
Well, I search, I always like battles better because the rival has something to offer me and that helps me to start creating and starting from a sentence. I mean, if he tells me something, I can go from there. Sometimes it’s a little more difficult when you start because you don’t know how to start. But after I’m listening to words, I connect with the public, I see the environment, and then I’m creating new words. My brain, my creative process, it kind of starts to increase and I flow with the environment and with whatever happens.
Well, today’s goal, thank God, was achieved, which was to win the regional. Well, obviously my second goal now is going to be the national one, I’m going for that with everyone. I also have a musical career that I am going to seek to work on and work on a lot more from now on. And well, nothing, all the possible successes that come.

I come from Bogota in Colombia. I competed in freestyle battles five years ago. I started in 2018, I started in my neighborhood where several people get together. This is how I began to know a little about the environment. And from there I fell in love with the culture in January of this year 15 to come try the scene in the United States. I know there was a team mission in what’s happening in Miami, with Orlando and others, because I had a pretty good reception by the people. I was competing for several months and I managed to qualify because this Red Bull is the regional one and well I’m thinking in qualifying in the national.
Entonces no me siento presionado, me siento feliz.
I feel that it is the ideal place, I feel that it could not have been a better place because I am outside my city, of my country but at the same time, I am representing the same people who have supported me at some point in time that said that I could go. Well, that’s how there is zero pressure here, but everything is at stake. So I don’t feel pressured, I feel happy.
My creative process is based on I really like freestyle, free freestyle and likewise. I link my ideas to arrive at an answer because in terms of the battle for me, the important thing is a battle of argumentation and the punchline is a debate that you have with another person rhyming constantly. So the one who debates best. I really like coherence in patterns and so on but for me, the creative process is always to listen to the rival, listen to him and generate an idea and what would be the opposite of what he is saying and release it. It’s the best I know.
It is to generate the immediate response, it is how we are struggling and that has me, so that he tells me something like I do not know that you are bad, then my answer would be, no I am good. That’s why this is like arguing a trap.
Well, the best advice that I have been given was given to me by my best friend, he is also a competitor from Colombia. He is quite well known there, greetings to him, he always told me, enjoy it, it is to enjoy doing something, even if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing. No, it doesn’t have a purpose and won or lose, that’s how you get on the bracket. But whatever it is, you’re going to enjoy the process because it’s been hard to get to this point where you can enjoy the whole process.
My mentality is to win, but even so, I am applying the advice that aims to dedicate the event to me, to spend the best that I can share with people that I used to see only for videos and now I can be with them and I kind of enjoy the experience but at the same time I’m focused to win.
If you have a dream follow it. It is not easy many times from the places where we come from, it is very difficult to fulfill dreams, but it is not impossible and whoever wants to can and here we are at Red Bull. So today I’m going to win for you, for all the people who have supported me and let’s hope on Colombia at the end.
There is a very curious story because the best freestyler on the planet is Aczino, who is a three-time Red Bull champion. The day I was going to retire from the freestyle battles I said I’m not going to continue anymore because it was being very difficult to keep my job and keep up with the competition and the opportunities they gave in Bogotá were limited to certain people. I said no, here it is, I’m not going to continue competing, not anymore. That night Aczino started following me on Instagram and I saw it as a sign and well I didn’t give up, here I am at Red Bull. So, that’s like the one I admire and Chuty. They are like my pillars. He doesn’t compete anymore, but Acru as a rapper and as a freestyler seems the best to me.
I would love to be able to work with Aczino, with Chuty, with Acru. I would like, for example, today I had the pleasure of meeting Sara Socas, who is today’s judge, but she has also been one of the most powerful freestylers on the planet. And the truth is, a collaboration with them, be it in a battle, in a song or in something, I would find it incredible with them.

Me llamo Luis Corona.
My name is Luis Corona. I’m from Venezuela, Maracaibo. And I was raised here in Orlando. I am a resident here in Orlando at the present.
Tengo 17 ahorita mismo. Ya varios años en esto.
I can tell you the original story of literally how I began to be freestyler. It was 2019, I was with a friend. We were watching FMS Argentina, and there I had time that he taught me, he introduced me to it. And then one day we said, let’s try to do that, it looked useful. We went to sit downstairs on a sofa, we put on Chill Build (featuring J Davis and Spooks). That one, we rapped on that one, quickly. And from there he kind of grabbed me, he hooked me on that art and this way. And really, super cool. Then there I discovered the battles with some friends in my high school, they started the same battle and I said I want to too and that’s where it started, that’s it. That’s where it all started. Yes, since I was 14, 14 battling, rapping since I was 13 years old. I’m 17 right now. Already several years in this.
Honestly, I am confident, I am relaxed and calm in my mind, because, I mean, all the respect to everyone here, all the respect to all ages, all the respect to everyone, because this is the same art and we share it. But I feel that I have a great privilege, which is being young and it means that I have lived, ready for those who have rapped since the 90s, even though I was not born in the 90s, since then I have had the chance to listen to everything. I have listened to all the rappers of all the years, I have adapted a style of theirs, but in my own way. I feel that being young I was able to adapt to doing what I wanted, my style, which is why I am the youngest and the only one who rapped in English and Spanish at the same time. I’m the first to do that bilingual way, so it really does. And I feel that being young influences that a lot. I came here when I was nine, ten years old, that’s why I speak English fluently, everything flows to me, I listen to more music in English than in Spanish. I really feel that being young, playing a big boy, is a great role in all the competition and that has really made me more relaxed, calmer, because I have nothing to lose. I have nothing to lose, I have everything to gain.
I don’t have a creative process, I never really have a process, I feel that my mind processes everything by itself. I never think about what I’m going to say. Obviously, when it’s a detail it’s different, I think I have to focus on something, I have to get to something, but since I prefer to do freestyle, I always say, this word sounds nice with this beat and I already do it. And if the word in Spanish doesn’t work for me, I’m going to try one in English. And so I go, that’s how I go and that’s how I play. Like a language puzzle in my head and I put it together. But also exactly, I can give you an answer and then calm down, like a confidant, to get to you. Yes, relaxed. I always see it as a show of charisma and a show of skills in the rapper. It’s basically how I see things.
Musically, which really for me, musically and as a rapper, are the same influences. Jay-Z, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Los Migos. I’m trying to think about what they’re selling me in Spanish right now, because they’re mainly from me… I’m going to give you the rap. I can tell you one that I listen to a lot. Well, a Cappella just because of the Venezuelan flow, I support it a lot. In general, more Jay-Z, Obviously, Jay-Z is from the 90s, but what you don’t go hard in the 2000s, the ones that give you that confidence. And no, the Kendrick Lamar ideas, all those things. In truth, I feel that the majority of the industry in English is what has inspired me and the most.
Influencias personales, entonces.
Personal influences, then. My father, my father. And influences because my father has worked a lot since he was little. I still haven’t incorporated much of that, but little by little I want to incorporate it because it is something that I respect a lot about my father. And being that more than an influence, they inspire my whole family, because at this age, apart from working, I want to achieve what I am good at, I want to achieve what my goal is. And I want my goal to be to revolutionize this freestyle with bilingual. And, feed my family as they fed me, likewise.
In truth that evolution, basically, as a Pokemon, did not start in me. Level five was nothing, level 16, I turned 16, and evolution again. And from here goes the next evolution, and what I’m going to be the next evolution, the next step. I have visualized this moment since I was 14, 15 years old, or about three, two years ago, I have visualized myself here, psyched up for this very interview, everything. Those who know me, my friends who know me, for all my fans, know that from the beginning I always tried to throw words at myself, sometimes I created words because I didn’t know how to finish. But sometimes I tried to incorporate English as well. It has really been a very slow process, but I feel that the slow processes are the most rewarding, the most worthwhile. And it has really been incredible that finally, finally, after so much time, that I had really been here last year, but I wasn’t old enough, I couldn’t. And now that I’m old, I don’t plan to move from here, I feel like I’m going to be here until when I want to leave, because I don’t think it’s anyone else’s decision to be there.
My goal today I want to start a rap revolution, basically. I feel that the freestyle has not died, but I have felt that it is in decline by styles. I feel that today people are going to enjoy a new style, a style that is going to refresh their minds and that is going to get them hooked on this art, which we love as much as I do. And I feel like this is going to be the change for my own future. I feel that I am going to begin to influence and manifest what I want in the future, which is to live from this. And I already feel that today is finally that change that I have waited for so long and instead of going back, I am going to continue going forward. Hoping in the future to give a house to my mother, which I have always wanted to give myself, and my own house and so on. I hope to live from this in general. That’s all.
One piece of advice that I have been told is to always know what you want. I feel that knowing what I want is what leads you to know what to do. I feel that it is something very important, something that I have incorporated a lot, especially for this day. One piece of advice that I am going to give is, really, first, before doing what people tell you, before criticizing yourself, criticize yourself to know what you are willing to do and not do. Do what you basically feel, not what other people feel you should do, because at the end of the day life has to be enjoyed, it has to think about today, not tomorrow, not yesterday, today. Always do what you want, what you feel is right, because I feel that if people do what they feel is right, it will really lead them on the right path, because that’s life, I feel like it rewards you. for doing it right. I will always feel that. In general, do what your heart tells you. It’s a cliché, but I feel that the older one grows, the more one realizes that various things that clichés have said are true, they help you to see life as beautiful, happier. And more in so many gray moments that are happening in the world, in my opinion. I feel that doing what you want, well, and it’s already literal, what makes you happy is more important.
I feel like I’m really grateful for this opportunity to share it with all my friends and all the local people I know. To the pending competitors, because I really do not think that today it will be the rival of the greatest threat today. I feel that it is like the rival of Smash Bros, when you are fighting with several characters and a new one comes out. Well, today the new character is resolved. And for my fans, who really must also be locals, I don’t know how many fans I have, but nothing, thanks for trusting me. I feel that many people, many friends have given me a lot of energy and I will always appreciate it. Instead of pressure, I focused it on energy, in truth I have always done it because a lot of people trust me and they are happy to see me here. I am also happy that they wanted to see me here and that they have always given me that energy, really. Very happy about all that.
Estoy disfrutando, estoy alegre.
I am enjoying it, I am happy. Thanks to Red Bull, obviously, for the opportunity. I finally have a platform to share all the expressions and emotions with art that I have had on my mind for so long that I wanted to do it.
Nothing, I’m really going to do what I always want. They are going to see, as I told you, the new style that I have in my language.
