Meet Quality Control’s ‘Popular Loner’ Metro Marrs

3.3K

18-year-old Metro Marrs out of Atlanta, Georgia is slowly making his mark in the music industry. As a member of Quality Control’s record label, Marrs is ready to show the world his talents. Best known for his hit songs “Bye Felicia” with 855k views and “Oh Yeah” with 193k views, the young rapper’s melodic voice separates him from any other artist coming out of Atlanta.

In May, Marrs went viral for being detained at Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn, Ga. During his graduation ceremony he threw 10k on his classmates to celebrate their achievement. While school officials were not happy with Marrs’ decision, he turned a negative situation into something positive. The Loners Rainy Day Scholarship was created to award high school Valedictorian and Salutatorian 5k each for their hard work every year.

Marrs latest project Popular Loner was released just last month. The name of the project came from him staying to himself through his high school years. He speaks a lot on missing social events to focus on his craft and perfect his sound. The 10-track mixtape has no features. We can look forward to him hitting the stage this fall at JMBLYA with Future, Gunna, and many more artists on his first tour. Marrs also hints at an EP dropping this fall. Check out our full interview with Metro Marrs below.

TheKnockturnal: As a young artist signed to one of the top record labels out right now, talk to me about how you were able to link up with QC and get to where you are today?

Metro Marrs: They saw my video called “Oh Yeah” on Youtube and Akademiks had posted it on his Instagram and Coach K and P had seen it. Then when they saw it they were like who is this kid? They hit up my managers and everything happened from there. We are all a team, we’re all a family you know what I’m saying? We’re all pushing the music together to make it get bigger and bigger.

TheKnockturnal: You’re a part of a label with some of the most successful artists out right now. How does this feel? Were there any artists who have taken you under their wing and helped you out?

Metro Marrs: Shoutout Bankroll Freddie, Duke Duece, Yachty we pulled up to his music video.  Everyone on the label. Shout out City Girls, Migos, everyone Baby. Every artist on QC we’re locked in 4L.

TheKnockturnal: In May, you made headlines for throwing $10,000 at your fellow graduates during your ceremony. A time of celebration, ended up with you being detained. Talk to me about that experience.

Metro Marrs: That experience was crazy no cap, that was a funny experience. When I got detained the whole crowd was like “let him go, let him go!” So like hearing that it was like damn they f*ck with me. That shit was fire. I threw the racks and they just like f*ucked with me.

TheKnockturnal: Now that you have  time to reflect back on that situation, if you had the chance would you do it again?

Metro Marrs: If I did it again I would have probably thrown more money no cap. Everything happens for a reason.

TheKnockturnal: Even though your graduation ceremony did not end up how you expected, it led to you launching the Loners Rainy Day Scholarship which awards Valedictorian and Salutatorian $10K to congratulate them on their hard work. How does it feel knowing you turned a negative situation into a positive situation?

Metro Marrs: The ‘Loners Rainy Day Scholarship’ is forever going to be a foundation. Shout out to the loners foundation, we’re just getting started though. Were giving out 5k to the valedictorian and salutatorian. Come find that it’s 10k a year, each class. We’re giving back to the community, giving back to the youth. No cap.

The Knockturnal: Now let’s talk about music. Just last month you dropped your latest project “Popular Loner”. How did the name of this project come about? I noticed this project had no features. Did you make this decision yourself?

Metro Marrs: I didn’t want no features, I did that on purpose. I just wanted to stand alone, stand out in this game. You don’t have to put features on your projects all the time. People want to hear you. No cap. Popular loner that came from me just all through my highschool.  I stayed by myself. I  didn’t really go out like that. I just been locked in, studio. I didn’t go to any football games, no homecomings. I had to make sacrifices. So I call myself the popular loner, I would stay out the way in school, but my name would always be in their mouth. I would try to stay out the mix, but I’m still in the mix so I’m a popular loner. Feel me?

The Knockturnal: In just a few months, some of your tracks have a combined total of 5 million streams! How does this experience feel like for you?

Metro Marrs: It’s all about manifestation. I pray a lot. Shoutout to my team, shoutout QC. Without them, none of this would happen. Shoutout SinceThe80s, Playbook. Stay blessed, good things will happen. The music is fire too so people are tuning in. Shout out to the loners.

The Knockturnal: Being an artist out of Atlanta seems a little tough since a lot of artists have a very similar voice coming from the same city. What were some things you had to do to create your own voice and stand out amongst your peers?

Metro Marrs: My melodies. I had to change my melodies. My melodies don’t sound like I’m from Atlanta.None of my songs sound like I’m from Atlanta. If you listen to it, you don’t get Atlanta vibes. You get different vibes for sure no cap. That alone set the bar like oh yeah he’s different. He doesn’t sound like any other Atlanta rapper. No cap, that’s not how we’re coming. We’re trying to take this worldwide, world music. We’re trying to make music for the world.

The Knockturnal:  In September, you’re set to take the stage at JMBLYA with Future, Gunna, and many more artists. Is this your first show since the pandemic? How does it feel knowing you’re going to share the stage with some of the top artists out right now?

Metro Marrs: My first tour for sure that. JMBLYA we’re going crazy for sure that. It feels great to be on the stage with the goats. Shout out Future, big goat for sure that, shoutout Gunna. All of them I’m going on tour with, were going to rock out.

The Knockturnal: What artist can we look forward to seeing you collaborate with in the future?

Metro Marrs: Imma work with Trippie Redd, me and Duke Duece got something on the way for sure that, me and Bankroll Freddie got something on the way, me and Yachty are going to have something on the way. I’m going to be collaborating with a lot of artists for sure.

The Knockturnal: Are there any projects outside of music that we might see you a part of soon?

Metro Marrs: Ummm I have an EP dropping in the fall. But I’m just going to be on the road touring, and turning up.
