There’s no better way to commemorate Black Music Month than an evening dedicated to Black excellence and artistry throughout history.
On Saturday June 21st, ‘Shaped By Sound’ makes its way to Chambers street in downtown Manhattan. Guests engulf themselves in the world of max, an exhibition of visuals and sound that share cultural moments of renowned Black artists.
Along the walls of the space are tapings of significant Black public figures like Queen Latifah, highlighting her 1993 Gammy-winning single “U.NI.TY.,” and Anita Hill, a successful lawyer whose actions provoked crucial conversations about the representation of Black women in law.
Wireless headphones are provided to create a personal listening experience, as music clips of songs by artists like Labrinth and Coi Leray play on large projector screens. Plus, exclusive performances by Cash Cobain and Monaleo liven up and ultimately conclude the night.
Max programming launched Scene in Black in 2021, a ‘social-first’ initiative that recognizes and highlights Black creators and Black audiences alike. The HBO Max team is committed to amplifying Black voices, elevating cultural experiences, and building a strong and supportive community for their audience.
Here are some special moments from the evening.
