Lincoln Motor Company- hot off of a record year ended 2018 in legendary fashion by launching the Lincoln Continental Coach Door- harkening back to the mid-century design that is now so iconic, and to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the 1939 Lincoln Continental of Edsel Ford- who commissioned the design. The release marks 80 years of the Continental namesake- that’s an automobile that has gone through ten generations of designs, innovations, and history. Securing its place in the zeitgeist and pop memory through works of film, political legend, and art. Celebrated for being the pinnacle of automotive excellence, the Continental continues in 2018 in its traditional four-door sedan form as well as a new, extremely limited edition Continental Coach Door, originally appearing on the 1951 design. It’s a rear-hinged door- in which the rear doors open opposite the front for asymmetrical and elegant design.
Visually, the result is a tastefully restrained look, in which balance feels restored with the addition of 6 inches to the wheelbase. The high beltline and integrated chrome door handle meet at the center of the car for a unique and beautifully minimal effect. The door swings outward in a gliding motion, compete with lighting. Inside, the vehicle features two seats divided by a console that features complete individual seat control.
The Lincoln Continental Coach Door for 2019 model year will be limited to 80 examples, and include the top Lincoln service and maintenance programs.
Lincoln debuted the vehicle at a private event in NYC which included work by Simon Doonan of Barney’s New York, as well as a dinner included steak, sushi and a variety of desserts in the spirit of the culture of Continental.
Lincoln also introduces the Aviator for the 2019 model year, newly redesigned, as well as the Nautilus and Navigator, which recently underwent redesigns. With the addition of the Continental Coach Door, Lincoln has one of the most exciting and beautiful fleets on the market.
