Exclusive: Jameela Jamil Talks Partnership With Always to Fight Period Poverty
The Knockturnal got the chance to speak with activist and actress Jameela Jamil who has recently partnered with P&G’s Always to help in the fight to end period poverty and support Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Menstrual Equity for All Act. This act would help systemically end period poverty in the U.S. Today, Jameela also delivered a keynote speech in Washington, D.C., to encourage policymakers to support the bill to drive systemic change. The fight to end period poverty is due to lack of access to period protection. Period poverty is a serious problem which affects people all around the world. One of the stigmas surrounding period poverty is that it only happens in unwealthy countries, but even in the most economically developed countries period poverty is an extremely serious issue. In fact, here in the U.S., nearly 1 in 5 girls have missed school because they didn’t have access to period products. Since the launch of Always’ #EndPeriodPoverty program in 2018, Always has donated over 160 million period products to people in need around the world, including more than 50 million in the U.S., in partnership with organizations like Feeding America®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. “Millions of people across our nation suffer from a lack of access to period products and are forced to forego educational or employment opportunities because of it,” said Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY). “As we celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28th, I urge everyone, including legislators, to support my Menstrual Equity for All Act. It is the first whole-of-government approach to address this issue and would help end the problem of period poverty.” To further help raise awareness around the prevalence of period poverty across the country and motivate society at large to support the bill, Always partnered with Jameela Jamil, who spoke to us on the issue.
You are partnering with P&G’s Always to help end period poverty and support Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Menstrual Equity for All Act, so could you just talk to us a little bit about why this was so important for you?
It’s so important to me because it is so maddening, frustrating, and shocking that even in 2022 we are even having this conversation. In 2022, in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, we have 3.5 million girls a year not being able to go to school because they don’t have access to period protection. We have 1 in 5 girls in the United States, and we’re talking in the millions here. This isn’t just in unwealthy states this is an issue in major cities as well like Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta. I think the subject has just been ignored because when we hear the phrase “period poverty” we think of the countries that don’t have this much wealth, and yet the United States is managing to fail 50% of a population by not making sure everyone has access to the dignity and protection of period products. These statistics are ridiculous it makes me so upset.
Has this been a project that you have always been passionate about or has learning more about the term “period poverty” and partnering with P&G’s Always made you more passionate?
Oh no, it’s something I have always been passionate about. I remember just a few years ago the UK went through a similar motion and we had tremendous success over there. It just has never occurred to me that in the United States of America that this was going on. So when this was brought to my attention, and I was offered the chance to partner up with Always and their amazing work in this area to not only donate a million pads to Feeding America® and trying to help in the fight to end period poverty, but to also it was just an honor to be a part of this fight and spreading awareness. I really think a lot of people don’t know, and part of that is we still find periods quite awkward to talk about which is something that also has to end because it’s such a natural event that nobody should feel any shame about. I’ve always tried to use my platform to raise awareness about important issues, and this is very high up on my list because I can’t believe what young people are going through the indignity of being neglected to this degree that you are now having your education suffer. It is mortifying.
You are also delivering the keynote speech in Washington, D.C. today, to encourage policymakers to support the bill were you nervous at all for that?
I wasn’t nervous for it, I just felt very excited and very honored to be able to talk about this subject. I just feel very hopeful that we can be a part of waking people up and also reminding all the people reading this interview that we have the power to change the situation. I feel as though we have been deliberately deterred away from this conversation and we haven’t been made as aware of how severe these things are. Now we know we must use all of our power as the people as the masses to put pressure on all of our elected officials to make sure that they support this important act. We also need to look at who we are allowing to represent us in power. We really need to be as educated as possible and we are learning with everything we are seeing with the reproduction rights being rolled back that we can not be complacent because it is to our detriment to not use all of our voting power and all of our opportunity to engage and change the situation for half of the population.
You talked about how it starts with the people, so what can people at home do to better support this cause?
Call your elected officials. Truly that is the first place to start because they do listen if enough pressure is applied. We have seen this again and again, as soon as the people become politically motivated and they group together and join forces we have seen astonishing turn outs. This is something that could actually be quite simple to deal with we just have to apply the pressure. They benefit from our inaction and our silence. We can not let them get away with this gross negligence anymore because it is mortifying, offensive, and frankly inhumane.
How did this support and partnership with Congresswoman Grace Meng come about?
Well that was via Always. Always was already working with her and I was able to join in to utilize my platform to be able to further the awareness around this subject because so many people don’t know. Nobody ever hears the word poverty and thinks about the United States, and there is so much poverty in the United States. No one would ever presume that in the United States of America we have period poverty. People need to understand that no one is galvanized to act because we don’t even know that it’s happening.
With reproductive rights currently being challenged I think it is also the perfect time to be bringing in period poverty into the discussion because it is very real and there is a stigma, so what do you think some of the steps those who do not have periods could take to also support and care about this act?
They should also be calling their elected officials otherwise people with periods are going to bleed all over their belongings, on their couches, or clothes because there are real consequences for everyone involved. We all win when we deal with this subject head on. It’s really important. It’s going to impact you in some way it’s going to impact someone you love, someone you know in some way so join the fight! We can not just keep looking at these subjects that are about basic human rights us “us” and “them” and “not my problem”. By now of all times we must learn that we must take on every fight together. We are deliberately divided because together we are so much stronger so we need to come together.

Old world glamor, whirlwind dancing, artistic decadence…. All of this and more unfolded at the Viennese Opera Ball in New York City last Friday. Hosted at Cipriani’s 42nd Street location, the annual ball put on by the city of Vienna to celebrate the Austrian-American relationship, resumed in-person in all its beloved splendor after a two year break.
The night started off with a reception: guests dressed in white tie and ball gowns browsed the artwork and other items up for auction. Meanwhile, Cipriani’s signature bellinis were passed around in champagne flutes, and small appetizers drifted through the room on trays. From elegant lighting and crimson curtains to red rose centerpieces at every table, the space was transformed by artful decor touches.

As guests made their way into the dining area for the start of the event, they were greeted by a refreshing endive, parmesan, and avocado appetizer and offered their choice of beverage. Alexander Van der Bellen, the Federal President of Austria, opened the program by welcoming all attendees, introducing the guests of honor, and emphasizing his love of the ball. To him, the ball represents “safeguarding of Austrian culture abroad” and how this event offers “new opportunities and mutually enriching one another” culturally by “celebrat[ing] Austria’s cultural diversity on an international stage.”

Ukrainian Bariton Iurii Samoilov took the stage with a moving tribute to his home country in light of the current war, and delivered a beautiful rendition of The Merry Widow. As guests dined on the second course of risotto with green peas, operatic performances by Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi, Johanna Will, Carolina Lopez, and Matthew White filled the expanse with enchanting melody. A sliced dry aged sirloin with leeks and potato dauphinoise and asparagus was served as a delicious main course, preparing ball-goers for a long night of dancing and festivities ahead.
The dancing portion of the ball kicked off with the introduction of the night’s debutantes and their escorts, who performed a beautiful opening waltz honoring Austria’s beloved, age-old ball traditions. They danced and spun beautifully through the night, and guests were invited later to join in the fun and learn a few basic dances. Couples took the stage with giddy excitement, spinning and ducking while learning about Austrian cultural heritage.
The Viennese Opera Ball, started in 1956 by Austrian immigrants, was based on the Vienna Opera Ball in its namesake city, which began in 1814. One of the only white-tie balls in the US and regarded as one of New York City’s “greatest annual events,” this event has long celebrated Vienna’s history and elegance in the city that never sleeps. This year’s ball, after pausing for two years, reinvigorated the city in its return to a full swing event calendar anticipated this summer and beyond.

In addition to celebrating rich cultural heritage, tonight’s ball supported the music therapy program at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and with support from Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. Proceeds from the tickets, donations, and auction items contributed to this important cause changing the lives of so many.
Playing For Change Foundation Impact Awards Gala & after-party had the Faena Forum in South Beach full of excitement this past Saturday to honor Luis Fonsi & Paula Abdul by celebrating their charitable achievements. Playing For Change Foundation (PFCF) is a non-profit music & arts organization with programs in over 15 countries with 50+ locations.
On Saturday, the Playing For Change Foundation hosted their 2nd annual gala, raising over 1 million in ticket sales and auction items, setting a record to date for the foundation! The evening kicked off with a cocktail hour before moving into an elaborate dinner featuring entertainment by Luis Fonsi, Cimafunk, and other prominent artists, all powered by CEEK VR, with support from Tequila Herradura. Some notable auction items included: an NFL Rams game package, a Miami Heat floor seats package, a luxury Napa trip with a Screaming Eagle experience, and many more.
The after-party at the Faena Theater was truly magical. The theme of the theater, located on Collins Avenue Miami, is inspired by Europe’s historic opera houses and had stunning gold-leaf and red velvet decor. As soon as guests walked into the after-party we were indulged with talented live musicians playing various genres of music, an open bar, hors-d’oeuvres, and a full dessert station. The hors-d’oeuvres enjoyed by guests included: chicken and waffles, hotdogs, mini sliders, and many more delicious bites. The dessert bar had a variety of cookies and donuts to satisfy any sweet tooth. My favorite hors-d’oeuvre of the night was the chicken and waffles which had a perfect blend of sweet, savory, crunchy, and light taste with a slight kick of spice. After grabbing some delicious bites and cocktails the guests danced the night away to the lively music by a variety of talented musicians, I even learned a few salsa dance moves!
PFCF Impact Award recipient Luis Fonsi comments, “Thank you, Playing for Change Foundation, I’m truly honored. One of the most valuable things I have learned throughout my career is how much we can help bring awareness and use our voices for the greater good, not just for entertainment. I’ve truly found profound meaning while helping others, be it through my work with St Jude Hospital or my Foundation, and I’m fortunate that thanks to events like this one, I’m able to speak more about causes so dear to my heart.”
Whitney Kroenke Silverstein, Co-Founder & Board President, comments, “It feels great to be back in Miami, in person, for our 2022 Playing for Change Foundation Impact Awards Gala. We can’t think of two better recipients than Paula and Luis, for their contributions not only to the world of music, but also for their commitment to using their platform to make a positive impact on the world.”
CEEK VR has teamed with Impact Awards/Playing for Change to bring this year’s event exclusively to the CEEK Metaverse. Founded in 2007, PFCF was established to create positive change through music and arts education. Our work engages marginalized youth in diverse communities around the world, primarily located in low and lower-middle-income countries. These communities are home to great cultural wealth, which we use to create educational and social opportunities. We currently operate 17 music programs in 13 countries and have positively impacted more than 40,000 lives since 2007, including more than 3,000 youth through regular programming in 2019. We employ more than 200 staff, teachers, and community leaders locally across program locations, including Mali, Morocco, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. Each program serves anywhere from 50 – 900 children. PFCF was honored to be named a Polar Music Prize winner in 2019”.
The three values Playing For Change Foundation lives by are local leadership, social empowerment, and transparency.

New Zealand-American footwear brand Allbirds has just released their latest innovative running sneaker called The Tree Flyer. The sneaker features the company’s SwiftFoam™ as part of the midsole for extra bounce while walking or running. The company exclusively unveiled the Tree Flyer at a launch event at the brand’s Flatiron district location in New York on May 5th. Allbirds co-founder Tim Brown, Chief Brand Officer Kate Ridley, VP Innovation & Sustainability Jad Finck, and Material Innovation Director Romesh Patel were in attendance. Allbirds tested the new sneaker for over a year amongst 115 runners with nearly 6000 miles before the release.
The company has a mission to reduce material waste in the production of footwear through use of their SwiftFoam™ process. The process is a method of midsole foam production which uses the company’s castor bean oil based resin (compared to petroleum based materials) which reduces energy use and less material is needed. The finished product is 30% lighter than the company’s Sweetfoam, and delivers an energy return with a rebound of 70% to the wearer. The Tree Flyer’s light cushioned midsole allows runners the ability to go longer distances. More technical specs of the sneaker include a 22.0mm forefoot and 30.5mm heel for a total offset of 8.5mm. Overall the entire weight of the sneaker with midsole, upper and laces combined is 269g [9.49oz] size M9.
Other features of the sneaker’s design include a flared external heel that provides additional support, an increased toe spring that provides better transition, a traction pattern on the sole for great grip, new reflective eye-stays, and flat laces. The “Tree” upper provides a sleeker fit that holds the wearers foot in while being more breathable and durable, and it is the that gives the sneaker its name.
The carbon footprint of the sneaker is also carefully taken into consideration, incorporating an emission number representing carbon use output into the design of each pair of the shoe. In reducing the carbon footprint of the sneaker each pair has an emission number of 9.92kg CO2e. Speaking on the importance of understanding the effects of carbon use and waste and it’s effect on the environment, and emission number use Jad Finck stated, “Everything we use and consume has a carbon footprint and the science behind that emission number is confusing, just like the science behind calories. You’re not always going to choose the lowest calorie food – sometimes you’ll go for the chocolate cake or the steak dinner – but you’re able to make that choice with all the nutritional information. Producers and service providers have an obligation to tell people the environmental impacts associated with what they’re making.”
The Tree Flyer is available in three colors: Lux Beige, Buoyant Yellow, Natural Black and comes in woman’s sizes 5-11, and men’s 7-14 including half sizes. The sneaker retails for $160 and can be purchased at Allbird stores and on Allbirds.com
Sonos Partners with Lorde to Debut a New Sonos Radio Station; Reveals $279 Ray Soundbar
Sonos unloaded a bounty of good news for audio-lovers this week, including the announcement of a partnership with award-winning recording artist Lorde, who has provided commentary and music selections for a new, blissed-out radio station, SOLARSYSTYM, available now on Sonos radio and Mixcloud. Lorde also collaborated with eco-conscious designer Everybody.World to design a carrying case for Sono’s celebrated Roam portable speaker.

The ultra-portable, waterproof Bluetooth speaker also got an update in the form of new three new organically-inspired colors: Olive, a muted green, the saturated orange of Sunset, and the icy cool blue of Wave. Roam automatically connects to your WiFi network at home and pairs with your device when you’re away, taking away any fumbling for switching connections. Roam is priced at $179 and available in the new colors now.
Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated news was the confirmation that Sonos is expanding its lineup to offer a less expensive but no less powerful soundbar called Ray. Priced at $279 and ideally scaled for smaller setups, Sonos Ray will be able to integrate into an existing household Sonos network or serve as the main listening device.

The Sonos Ray is still compatible with other Sonos speakers, allowing you to connect rear speakers and a subwoofer wirelessly. But it’s designed to stand on its own, including four Class-D digital amplifiers have been fine-tuned to the soundbar’s unique acoustic architecture, two powerful tweeters for clear highs, plus split waveguides that project sound from wall to wall.
The Sonos Ray also features two centered high-efficiency midwoofers to ensure faithful playback of mid-range frequencies and solid bass. Complex systems support a dynamic bass output, that is full and even. Two of the most interesting features are the speech Enhancement setting that boosts voice frequencies and clarifies dialogues. The Night Sound setting reduces the intensity of loud sounds and increases the level of quieter sounds. Sonos Ray connects to the TV via optical cable, but you can actually control it with your existing TV remote or the excellent Sonos app, where you can also modify the equalizer settings.
Sonos celebrated the Sonos Ray and the new colors of the Roam with a multi-world bash in NYC, immersing guests in a myriad of experiences, from a lush garden inspired by Roam’s new Olive color to a celestial living room featuring sounds from Lorde’s SOLARSYSTYM radio coming from the new Ray soundbar.

The Sonos app is one of the best combinations of radio and system control functionality, with hundreds of built-in listening sources. You can stream music, podcasts, radio, and audiobooks from hundreds of popular services, including Apple Music, Amazon Music, Audible, Pandora, Spotify, TIDAL, and more. If none of those satisfies, the Sonos Ray also supports Apple AirPlay 2 for music listening.
Finally, new across the Sonos lineup is Sonos Voice Control, launching at the beginning of June. Integrated into a software update, the new voice experience will offer fast, accurate hands-free control of your music and your Sonos system with no compromise to your privacy. The feature will not record user audio commands or relay them to the cloud for processing, which is unique for the system.
Sonos Ray is available for preorder today and is expected to ship before June 7th, 2022. Learn more about the Sonos line up and shop here.
