On the Scene: Shantell Martin x Museum of Arts and Design Party

by Liam Wamba September 29, 2022
written by Liam Wamba

Shantell Martin launched her collaboration with Hoek at the Museum of Arts and Design. The display was followed by a discussion with the artist about the collaboration process. Founded by Conor Coglhan and Brian Chu, Hoek is a made-to-order furniture and design brand produced out of A05 studios in Red Hook. All Hoek products are made with locally sourced sustainable material, like discarded plastics, and sustainably sourced plywood from Canada.

Conor Coghlan explained that he was initially a fan of Shantell’s work before reaching out through instagram to ask her to collaborate. Shantell is a veteran collaborator, who has worked with museums, brands, and galleries. She uses line work, which she fluently adapts to different canvases. A05’s CNC machine, a massive pen, has featured in several other of their large scale collaborations. Shantell used this machine to bring her line work to size.

Shanell spoke about the desire to create a world for her artwork. The collection at the Museum of Art and Design felt like a manifestation of that desire. Furniture adds interactive depth to any installation. When the furniture is the installation, it almost feels like play. This will surely not be Shantell’s last collaboration. Hoek has also expressed that they look to collaborate with more artists. Check out the collection at Hoek’s website and follow Shantell and Hoek on IG..

On The Scene: Albright College NYFW SS 2023

by Claire Kay Hernandez September 29, 2022
written by Claire Kay Hernandez

On the evening of Saturday, September 10th, Albright College returned to the runways of NYFW with its “8 Collections” Fashion Show. For its second year in a row, Albright sent collections from 6 recent graduates and 2 current students down the celebrated runways of NYFW.

Designers included Jennifer Raineri, Camille Fuller, Na’Yalaijah Fournillier, Liz Polley, Nicholas Kedge, Olivia Connor, Jonathan Otero, and Sarah Kim. The runway saw a wide range of inspiration from each designer.

For example designer Camille Fuller presented a collection of naturally dyed ensembles under the title “Earth’s Confections.” The collection was a walking statement that vibrant, contemporary fashion can indeed be environmentally friendly.

Another designer Olivia Connor showed her elegant dressy sportswear collection named “Bittersweet.” According to Connor the collection “was a beautiful representation of the beauty that can emerge from the pain of loss.”

The keystone collection of the evening was presented by returning designer Liz Polley. Her collection was inspired by the various places visited on her travels during the numerous relocations her career has required.

In the audience was influencer & author, Caroline Vazzana, an Albright College Alumni. Also in the audience was noted actor/musician Sloan Morgan (D4M $loan), the West Philadelphia native known for his hit singles “Don’t Diss Me.”

The second annual Albright College show gave the media & public alike the opportunity to see the breadth of talent that have graduated, or will graduate soon, from the program. Overall, the entire show was a success.

On The Scene: Patricia Field ARTFASHION NYFW SS23

by Claire Kay Hernandez September 25, 2022
written by Claire Kay Hernandez

On September 14th I attended the Patricia Field Art Fashion NYFW Runway Show. The venue was high energy as DJ William Francis set the tone. Special guests in attendance included Cyndi Lauper who sat in the front row.

The collection featured hand painted pieces for both men and women. As a native New Yorker, Patricia Field is a style innovator and creative visionary. Her entire show was loud and proud. Every model walked with confidence as they entered the runway. There were 15 different Artists and Designers that contributed to the show.

Artists included: Dope Tavio, 5 X Five, Zoom Cherry, Lara Padilla, Jason Brickhill, Darren Apolonio, Scooter Laforge, SSIK, Asta Razma, Jonathan Bressler, THESEPINKLIPS, David Dalrymple, Jody Morlock, Studmuffin NYC, and Steven Davis.

The show itself felt like a ballroom experience. With the music and energy from the crowd, each piece stood out. Showcasing 30 different looks, Field was setting the tone for what we can expect to see in street style next year. Her distinctive approach to dressing is eye-catching. Each piece had its own unique styling to it, everything is one-of-a-kind.

Hair and makeup done by Marcello Costa Studio. Some event sponsors included Curamia Tequila and Kastra Elion Vodka. Fashion lovers can shop the runway online at patriciafield.com or in person at her Gallery at 200 E Broadway.

Lori Harvey’s Favorite Activewear Line, Gymshark, Debuts “Sweat” During NYFW

by Olympia Dalley September 25, 2022
written by Olympia Dalley

On September 10th, Lori Harvey and Gymshark hosted a welcomed distraction from the usual hustle and bustle of NYFW, to debut their new “Sweat” collection.

Gymshark’s  NYFW debut of its all-new “Sweat” collection was far from your typical NYFW event. The event took place at  The Skin You Gym In, showroom, and studio.  Gymshark’s brand ambassador, Lori Harvey welcomed the NYFW crowd to join them in a day of wellness, beauty, and Aerial “silks” pilates classes.

Gymsharks NYFW event was unlike any NYFW event I’ve attended and, was a welcomed change from the usual runway show or presentation. As opposed to walking through any old showroom to view Gymsharks latest collection, attendees were welcomed with Gymshark gear and had the opportunity to join in on Gymshark ambassadors, Lori Harvey’s favorite Aerial “silk” pilates class.

Sidebar, I totally understand why Lori’s abs look like that now.

During the day-long event, guests leisurely walked through Gymsharks, The Skin You Gym studio, and had the option of experiencing a facial workout from Face Gym and/or a vitamin-infused Ivy drip from Dripology. Guests were also gifted pieces from Gymsharks latest “Sweat” collection, which made it easy to join in the Aerial “silk” pilates classes. What better way to enjoy a fashion debut than to get to wear the pieces while viewing the collection?

Of course, Lori was dressed head to toe in the latest Gymshark “Sweat” collection. Take a peak at Lori in Gymshark’s “Sweat Seamless Sculpt Leggings” and the matching “Sweat Seamless Sports Bra” in the color “Winter Teal below.” This may be the easiest NYFW Lori Harvey looks to steal!

On the Scene: Dîner en Blanc Celebrates 10th Anniversary

by Dano Nissen September 23, 2022
written by Dano Nissen

Dîner en Blanc is a dinner party done the white way.

Thousands dressed head to toe — and in some cases Venetian mask to roller skates — in all white, congregated in a secret location disclosed the day of the event. This year, marking its tenth anniversary, the dinner happened to return to its inaugural setting, outside the Brookfield Plaza on the Hudson River.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Knockturnal (@theknockturnal)

Dîner en Blanc-ers brought picnic baskets full of fine dining and headed over to the location from designated drop points in Manhattan to arrive around 7 pm. Some rocked ornate designs, while some kept it simple. But what remained constant — white, white, white.

The feast kicked off with a ceremonial wave of the napkin. Gazing upon the view of the Hudson River one could see a sea of fluttering white napkins. There was live music, dancing and performers in elaborate futuristic garb putting on a show for patrons. In the media lounge, celebrity guest chef Todd English prepared an array of delicacies, including babaganoush, lobster rolls with caviar and wagyu beef. Champagne Barons de Rothschild was the evening’s champagne sponsor and provided the alcoholic beverages in the lounge.

Coming off a two year Covid hiatus and commemorating the tenth anniversary made the night extra festive. For co-founder and president Sandy Safi, it made sense to bring the event back to whence it came. “We were looking for an iconic place in New York. And its the tenth anniversary,” she said. “New York is what started ever hitting globally. What better place to come back to come back to the place it all started. The first time we were here we were less than 1,000. Now we’re over 4,000. We’ve grown to 120 cities around the world. We built a global community of people who travel to city to city and love to do this.”

After taking two years off due to the pandemic Chef English was glad to come back for his fourth. “We realize we are gregarious animals and we need to go out and socialize,” he said of Diner en Blanc’s return. “I love Diner en Blanc, it’s a global organization that brings people of all walks of life and cultures together in a peaceful and celebratory manner, and exemplifies that food is our greatest democracy.”

On The Scene: NYFW, The Talks: Navigating the New Phygital Age of Fashion and Art

by Sydney Hargrove September 23, 2022
written by Sydney Hargrove

As we move through the ever-blossoming world of technological advancements, it seems like the Metaverse is on everyone’s minds. But there’s another word that’s been buzzing lately, and it can mean way more than one might think. Phygital is described as “the concept of using technology to bridge the digital world with the physical world with the purpose of providing a unique interactive experience for the user,” but its meaning doesn’t end there. The concept has been applied to fashion so much more lately, providing style enthusiasts with so many options beyond what was originally possible within the four walls of their closet. Not only is the concept super cool, but it’s also sustainable, and taking steps to create a world with less waste.

In order to learn more about what’s in store for us as consumers in this new age of Phygital fashion, we needed to hear from some experts. This past week, NYFW and Afterpay hosted an incredible panel for their iconic NYFW: The Talks series. On the panel were Melanie McClain, head of community pools and founder of blurred lines, Natalie McGrath, Afterpay’s VP of marketing, Elise Swopes, an artist, and Michelle Reeves, the co-founder, and CEO of Mavion World, a global NFT fashion marketplace.

Phygital combines the words digital and physical to create something so much more. The women discussed a store in soho, that they described as “an empty store with a fitting room and an iPhone ” where you then have the option to sample endless style combinations. They were undoubtably referring to the Zero10 x Crosby studios popup that was open in SoHo earlier this month. The uniquely futuristic experience took viewers on a different approach to a stylistic shopping experience. Michelle Reeves told the story of her young son  going into Balenciaga in search of T-Shirts that he believed would unlock an exclusive Fortnite skin. Though that wasn’t the case, it did get her thinking about the links between the physical and digital aspects of fashion.

It was an incredibly insightful conversation that allowed audience members to think outside the box when it comes to readily available style. Just because you may not have the physical materials to create something doesn’t mean that it can’t be done, and the steps towards the Phygital fashion world are nothing short of exciting.

NYFW Talks Roundup: Mindfulness, Sustainability, Ballet Design, and More

by Megan D'Souza September 20, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Spring Studios’ Mindfulness in Fashion talk, hosted by Alo, featured panelists Bianca Quiñes AKA Quin, Christa Janine, Kirat Randhawa, and Hilary Rhoda discuss mental health in their fields and how it plays into the fashion industry at large. Moderator Chrissy Rutherford asked meaningful questions to discover real experiences, learned habits, and more from each of the panelists. Christa and Kirat shared how growing up in religious homes focused on mental health as something that could be solved by prayer, and how they had to learn that “what it means to be well [for them] is different from what [they] were taught it meant to be well” (Randhawa). Panelists stressed the abundance mindset over the scarcity mindset, and then went into work life balance. Quin advised to “tell yourself [self-care/mindfulness] is non-negotiable, like brushing your teeth” in order to make it a priority. In order to show up for others and in the workplace, you must first show up for yourself and make sure that you’re able to care for yourself. Mindfulness is a “necessary means to be of service to the world” (Randhawa). We’ve all experienced the culture of busy-ness: those who seem frazzled by all they have going on, are perceived to be working harder – but we need to reframe the narrative to recognize that those who are calm and grounded aren’t necessarily not pushing themselves professionally. Overall, the fashion industry and other professional industries are slowly coming around to honor individuals’ mindfulness journeys, there’s still a long way to go. People are rapidly transforming their own self-care routines, and employers are going to have to catch up.

The next talk we attended focused on “quality, eco-conscious design that lasts a lifetime” from fashion to home design. Presented by LoveSac and moderated by Kerry Pieri, panelists Shawn Nelson, Abrima Erwiah, Olivia Ponton, Laura Hodges discussed The Long-term Luxury of Sustainability. Climate consequences affect everybody, and if they don’t feel real, it’s due to privilege and they’re guaranteed to catch up fast. LoveSac (who recently debuted a collection with Alice & Olivia) recycled 350 plastic bottles per couch, and is trying to lead the charge to make good design synonymous with sustainability. Currently, a misconception exists within the industry: you have to compromise on quality design to get sustainable products (think: bottlecap wall art, stiff plasticky rug) – but this is false. Additionally, the most sustainable item is the one you already have. Furniture design cycles used to be every 30 years and every 10 for fashion, but social media has been speeding up the process, and companies are racing to produce more output to satisfy this demand. Ultimately, all the panelists agreed that the biggest companies have the biggest input, so they need to get on board to make a significant difference.

The final talk I attended, Ten Years of Costuming the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala, featured panelists Gianna Reisen, Marc Happel, Humberto Leon, Zac Posen talking about their experiences costuming the NYC Ballet. Donya Archer Bommer moderated a conversation designed for dance, in advance of the iconic Fashion Gala. The Ballet’s Gala features historic costumes over 50 years old that are still in use, as well as new design collaborations. The Ballet has collaborated with over 30 designers, first starting with Valentino back in 2012, under the direction of Vice Chair Sarah Jessica Parker. This Gala is the only time that costumes come first at the New York City Ballet – usually, designers need to prioritize lightness and movement to complement dancers’ movements. It’s also an opportunity for designers to try something outside their comfort zones and outside the usual world of fashion. Humberto Leon spoke about his experience bringing social commentary into his designs for the ballet – he looked at the dancers’ social media to learn about each dancers’ individual style, based their costumes off that, and put them in sneakers. This collection for 2016, meant to be a political protest, is still going around the fashion and dance world 6 years later. He also brought the collaboration back into the fashion world by having dancers be models in his fashion shows. They would “fall”, eliciting horrified gasps from the audience, and rise in a graceful way that showed the entire effect was intentional. In this way, both designers Zac Posen and Humberto Leon illustrated how they needed to reflect the dancer’s essence and the heart of the piece itself in their costumes. The fashion collaborations by the Ballet are a beautiful example of collaboration between two beloved NYC industries.

Dee Rivera, founder of Hamptons Fashion Week, collaborated with the Times Square Alliance to produce Times Square Fashion Week on September 12. On the scene: Paris Laundry NYFW Event

by Liam Wamba September 20, 2022
written by Liam Wamba

We got to visit Paris Laundry at their private pop-up show for NYFW. The pop-up ran from September 9th through September 11th. It took place inside 375 Showroom, an appointment-only boutique in the Lower East Side. Visitors got the chance to view the collection and purchase some of the pieces at a discount. ASAP illz, who featured in the promo for the pop-up, was at the store trying on various pieces while we were checking it out.

The partnership with Ilz is emblematic of Paris Laundry’s world. Guy Samuels told us the name is a reference to the spin cycle of high fashion reselling New Yorkers their own style at a higher price. Foreign brands dominate the luxury clothing scene in NYC. Paris Laundry looks to fill what Guy sees as a gap in the market for upscale New York clothing.

Production primarily takes place in NYC with luxe textiles sourced from around the world. Guy’s mother worked in the garment district. While speaking briefly about his design process, he explained that the materials are a major part of his impetus to design.

Head to Paris laundry’s website to purchase some of the pieces we browsed at the store. To keep up with the brand, follow them on Insta.
