Artist Jennifer Elster Hosts VIP Preview of ‘The Retrospective of an Extroverted Recluse’

by Staff May 20, 2016
written by Staff

At her opening in Tribeca, Jennifer Elster was unavoidable. She was darting around the room like a nurse tending to a thousand patients; checking on her paint works, other humans performing; “are you doing okay?”, performing her own work, “central!”, to rearranging a piece that had turned over. If you weren’t asking, “who is that curious woman?”, she was asking guests, “so, what do you think?”, or cooing, “it’s so good to see you!” She was chicly dressed, but not oppressively boho; she maintained a glass of wine through night. She was glowing the entire time; clearly still on a life-long bender that hinged on perfection.

But for a long time, this woman -absolutely fizzling with energy- was avoidable. In every sense she was avoidable; she’d avoid questions, certainly avoid showing work, avoid explanation. She approached this retrospective with sensitivity. It was the first moment to show much of this work, and for someone like Elster, one thing she can no longer avoid is judgement of her work. But much of the work is stenciled or handwritten thoughts on canvas and paper: brief, often witty reflections on life. Elster has still successfully avoided revealing the time and place and circumstance that might have prompted any given phrase. We see this avoidance in her “In The Woods” video series, which followed the likes of Alan Cumming and Moby, hearing their responses but never the instructions.

Elster told us for the opening night, “the musicians did not receive programs until they arrived.” In this way, Elster is toying with the idea that while the performance is now unavoidable, why not go further, make it all that much more raw. Same goes for the performers dealing with Gender, Socio-economic issues, and more; almost alien in their presentation; stoic and nearing some sort of reverse uncanny valley. So here we are, asking about limits, which Elster took a good while to consider. But when asked about limits as a concept she retorted: “I trust my moral compass so I believe in pushing the limits as far as I am curious to explore to express my feelings or perspective. I push life in all mediums I get entangled with [sic]. If I am scared of something specifically, I am also drawn to it.”

Makes sense, considering the fact if she’s having a retrospective, a terrifying proposition, might as well do it perfectly. Worth knowing if Elster felt a sense of unavoidability in all of it … she goes on: “I have wanted to feel and expose my own vulnerability and I did so very much at the opening.” Called it. “And in turn I saw many people feeling and crying. We opened ourselves and that is beautiful and honest and brave.” Elster, who has collaborated with Yoko Ono and the late David Bowie, may know a thing or two in terms of getting other people to open up, even if she’s still shut off (remember, lots of this work is just now getting shown). Elster revels in, but never addresses the power of words. She’s a young Terry Gross. Elster makes a final observation: “I feel as if people are literally walking around inside of me at the Gallery […].” As a viewer, it felt this way, too. But with Elster there, I felt like a parent checking out my kid’s dorm away at college, with my kid rushing around in front of me, trying best as they can to tidy up and explain. There shouldn’t be a shame in it. Life is a choreography, and we can’t avoid a watchful eye, even our own.

J. Elster: The Retrospective of an Extroverted Recluse will be on view from May 13th to May 25th, 2016 at 75 Leonard St. NYC, 12:00 – 7:00 PM; closed Monday.

Ashlee Simpson, Evan Ross & Jonathan Scott Attend Swiffer and Mr. Clean Event

by Frances Raybaud May 20, 2016
written by Frances Raybaud

Design enthusiast and pop personality Ashlee Simpson joined Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers yesterday at an event sponsored by Swiffer and Mr. Clean to discuss home cleaning and other home improvement. Simpson was excited to discuss not only home cleaning, but her current projects.

This is pretty exciting.

Yeah! Yeah, it’s always good to have a clean slate, clean house, especially with our daughter.

So what do you particularly like about the Swiffer brand?

About the Swiffer brand, it makes it easy. Leaving crumbs on the floor and Jagger’s starting to crawl, so it makes life easy. It’s easy to just press the button. house cleaning is important!

Do you work on home improvement a lot?

Well, I mean having two children, I’m like yeah! So I have to clean the house up, kind of organize things, and I feel like now that it’s spring, we just got another fresh start, yes it’s very important. Especially with all the toys everywhere.

How are you liking New York City?

I love New York!

What musicians do you listen to right now?

Ooh, interesting. Well I love Evan’s mom, Mama D (Diana Ross), I love Karen O, Sade.

So you’ve done some theatre?

I love doing theatre, it’s so much fun. I’m not looking to do any right now, but I’d love to do it again.

So what are you working on right now?

I’m doing an album with my husband. We’ve been writing it, discovering it. Soulful, a little rap, it’s been fun.

Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers loved discussing New York, which we all know is a dirty city, and his preferences with cleaning.

So, what’s your home cleaning philosophy?

I’m not a germaphobe. However, when I’m showing a room to someone, I want it to feel crisp and clean. The only reason people don’t keep their home spic and span is because it’s difficult. So if we make it easy, people will actually clean.

So what about your childhood? Because I bet children don’t want to be home cleaners or in real estate-

No, actually, my brother and I were actors. We made hangers when we were seven, because our father wanted us to get a job. It ended up actually being a huge success- this one woman ordered them by the thousands. Imagine, seven year olds, making hanger by the thousands…and then we didn’t want to be struggling actors, so my brother got a real estate license and I went to school for design, and then we just went from there.

What do you like about New York City?

It’s funny you ask, because earlier today we were promoting the event by walking down the city sidewalks with Swiffers, and people were watching us like “is he really cleaning a New York City sidewalk?” Can you imagine what was on the bottom of that thing? It was really funny to see. We’re filming here too, and it’s interesting because you’re in an apartment you can’t escape the filth, you can’t escape the grime…it’s right in front of your face. You really want to make sure you have multifunctional furniture pieces that also function as storage, that you can put away. So one, you can get the clutter away, and then you can clean.

So there you have it. Perhaps by the time you next feel inspired to clean, you’ll have a new album by Evan Ross and Ashlee Simpson to listen to!

On The Scene: Freedom for All Gala

by Dalton Taylor May 15, 2016
written by Dalton Taylor

Last Wednesday, Freedom for All charity held its annual gala at the Top of the Standard, inviting donors and human rights activists to recap on their combined accomplishments throughout the year. Along with Michael Stipe, Nicole Miller, and Princess Beatrice of York in attendance, musician Rhiannon Giddens of the band “Carolina Chocolate Drops” graced the crowd with a few choice songs. Following a heart wrenching speech by a woman liberated from a human trafficking ring, Giddens stepped up to the stage with her banjo, accompanied by only a bassist. The crowd grew solemn at first, with songs touching on the topic of slavery leading off her set. Like the people whose goal it is of Freedom for All to support, the mood gradually lightened as Giddens began to perform uplifting songs about liberation and freedom. The crowd was invited to sing along, and clapping ensued as an a capella piece closed out the night.

In the past year, Freedom for all has rescued over 3,000 people, helped launch an NGO to assist survivors in Cameroon, pulled over 70 children out of slavery in Ghana, as well as launched many more projects based in the the Middle East and the Philippines.

Audi Presents ‘Bold Notion: Art of Innovation’ At CORE: club

by Staff May 14, 2016
written by Staff

Visual and performance artist Matthew Schreiber unveiled his new Bold Notion installation last night at the CORE:club in Midtown. A walk through of the installation, presented by Audi, was preceded by cocktails on the CORE:club’s outdoor patio. Specialty drinks featuring LED ice cubes and vaporized alcohol were served alongside trays of escargot, caviar, and quinoa with seared duck. Guests were then invited to walk through the exhibit and interact with the artwork itself.

Upon entering the fields of red laser beams, many stopped, as if it felt wrong to enter the space and disrupt the beams on their way across the space. Schreiber admits that this feeling of unease was intentional. He told The Knockturnal, “It’s this super exclusive club, and that you need to get past the gauntlet was on purpose.” He also divulged his research into dark liquidity, which he describes as a “secret society of economics.” The installation’s crosshatching lines of light do feel like an entrance exam. Just as villains in films flip and dive to avoid detection while executing their nefarious plans, guests too must decide whether to avoid the beams or confront them head on, something that engages each individual both mentally and physically.

After guests had a chance to immerse themselves in “Bold Notion: Art of Innovation,” they were invited to attend a question and answer segment with Schreiber, curated by editor-in-chief of Modern Painters, Scott Indrisek. Schreiber spoke of his inspiration for installation stating that he wanted attendees to feel as though they were being “scanned” upon entering. He also told The Knockturnal that he wanted to “erase the space” by turning off the main lighting system and using only his red lasers to provide light and alter the existing architecture of the CORE: club to make the space feel new. Schreiber also found his work reflecting the latest LED technology and design aspects that are unique to Audi before he even drove one of the cars, something that was an interesting, but purely coincidental element of the installation.

Following the Q&A, select guests were invited to a dinner upstairs with Schreiber and his wife, whom he states was his collaborator on the project. A multitude of differing courses were served including pea consommé, white asparagus in a lettuce brown butter coulis, Dover sole ballotine, a veal trio with pomme dauphine, strawberry crème on a black olive financier, and marshmallows made by the CORE:club’s in house pastry chef. Accompanying wine was served for each course, but servers withheld the types being provided unless asked in an attempt to urge guests to focus solely on the food.

On Saturday, May 14th the CORE:club will open Matthew Schreiber’s “Bold Notion: Art of Innovation” to the public. To view the transformed space head to 66 East 55th Street tomorrow only.
