Last night, we were on the scene in Downtown, Manhattan asΒ IKEA US provided an exclusive first look at their upcoming global IKEA Festival, hosted by nine cities including Austin, TX and Brooklyn, NY.

IKEA Festival formally kicks off tomorrow,Β  starting in Austin, circling the globe, coming back to New York on September 2nd, visiting more global hotspots, and finishing in Paris, France. This preview event did not disappoint and was attended by some of our favorite and most notable influencers and celebrities including Peter Thomas Roth, Eric Rutherford, Eric West, Ralph Souffrant,Β  Michelle Song, Urszula Makowska and more as the posed for pictures and dressed picture-perfect for their Instagram stories.

Guests, such as myself sipped on IKEA signature cocktails, ate classic IKEA foods with a modern twist, experienced one-of-a-kind exhibitions celebrating iconic IKEA products over the years, and previewed their upcoming collections KRΓ–SAMOS and BLΓ…VINGAD.

Marcus Engman, Chief Creative Officer at Ingka Group (IKEA Retail) says, β€œIt has been a joy to see IKEA Festival grow over the past few years. This time, we are focusing on people who want to spend more time doing their hobbies and passions. We want to show how a little creativity when making your space your own can have a huge impact. A BILLY bookcase is a BILLY bookcase in every IKEA store in the world. It’s when you take it home that it transforms. That intersection is what we want to explore and celebrate during IKEA Festival.”

As well as the nine host cities, IKEA Festival will be taking place in many other IKEA stores globally. With activities like speed dating with home furnishing specialists, food trucks serving up the latest IKEA food offering, events in store, and special offers for IKEA Family members, be sure to check your local IKEA website to see what they have lined up.

On the Scene: Value Culture’s Outside Lands Pre-Party

We got the chance to get “festival ready” at the Outside Lands kick off party which was held August 4th. The event took place at Bloomingdales at Westfield mall in San Francisco. The fun afternoon featured a live performance, a fashion presentation by Bloomingdale’s personal shopper, light bites, and specialty cocktails. The event was hosted by Value Culture, A 501c3 NGO focused on building the future by valuing cultures.

Upon arrival we headed to the check in table and felt like we had been transported to a whole other world. Attendees were wearing festival attire while sipping on specialty cocktails presented by Bacardi. Music filled the whole floor as local singer Sam Johnson played guitar and guests swayed along. The event also featured quick bites prepared by Honey Brie Boards in the form of charcuterie board bowls filled with decadent cheese and crackers paired with a variety of dried fruit and nuts. We also got to chat with Bloomingdale’s Personal Shopper, Amanda Adams who gave us a fashion presentation on all the best festival pieces Bloomingdale’s had to offer.

Value culture, created by founder Adam Swig, believe that culture heals, builds, and brings people together. The San Francisco based nonprofit says, “In our ever changing globalized world, there’s never been a more important time for us to value the world’s cultures, heritages, arts, music, and those creating and preserving humanity’s greatest gift to each other.” The mission of Value Culture is to produce and support artistic, educational, charitable, and spiritual events to inspire individuals to give back in their communities. The Father of Stencil Graffiti Reveals New Works at Solo Show at West Chelsea Contemporary

West Chelsea Contemporary is the right place for an artist like Blek Le Rat to show for his first solo exhibition in New York because it was in 1971 that the artist (now 40 years into a career) found his seed of inspiration in NYC. “There was anΒ incredible profusion, in the subway, on the walls surrounding basketball courts, graffitiΒ drawn in marker, nestling signatures surmounted by a crown, spray-painted lettering,Β filled with swirls and colors, everywhere I looked. I was so intrigued by theseΒ illuminations I remember asking the inevitable question: “What does all this mean? WhyΒ are these people doing this?”

 

The graffiti I saw in New York remained firmly planted in my memory, though acting outΒ my own graffiti took ten years to hatch.

 

Studying fine arts and architecture during the 1970s at the Γ‰cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Blek Le Rat always had an academic mind for art. Well-versed inΒ etching, lithography, and screen printing, Blek Le Rat had the skill for mastering art. But thrilled by the risk, unpredictability and beauty of street art, he was drawn to the craft. Armed with a study ofΒ architecture at the Architectural Teaching Unit #6, he was well-suited to create work around the urban environment. Together, he began applying the principles of fine art to the street in Paris, becoming the pioneer in the place where even the most progressive thinkers dismissed graffiti as a nuisance.

Years later, some of Blek Le Rat’s questions of meaning have been answered, recognizing theΒ symbolic power of graffiti: “I’m here, getΒ used to it.” Over time, Blek Le Rat took advantage of stencils to make his process more efficient but no less individual or beautifully executed. The result has been hundreds of works, all over the world, often composed of human-scale dancers, musicians, common people, and of course, the rat itself, an ever-changing, reoccurring character in Blek Le Rat’s cast of stencils.

Cited as an inspiration for Banksy (who has been welcomed into the world of fine art), it’s an opportunity for Blek Le Rat to reconstitute his street art in the context of a canvas, serving as yet another turn inward and reconsideration of his classical training. The new prints on view continue reveling in the historical references Blak Le Rat has treasured in his work, featuring figures such as Beethoven, Sibyl, Eros, and a tribute to fellow artist Richard Hambleton, as well as new subjects of interest, often superimposed on rustic backgrounds, just as they might be found in the wilds of the urban space.

West Chelsea Contemporary openedΒ in October 2020 under the direction of Lisa Russell, a tastemaker with a unique appreciation for mediums. Showcasing everything from mid-career and emerging artists to legends like KAWS, YayoiΒ Kusama, Keith Haring, Mr. Brainwash, Takashi Murakami and more, West Chelsea Contemporary was the logical choice to steward such a show in New York.

Dearly Beloved, It’s Time to Check Out ‘Prince: The Immersive Experience’

We only want to see you laughing in the purple rain or the purple rain inspired room at Prince The Immersive Experience in Chicago. The newly open exhibit invites Prince fans and soon to be fans to immerse themselves in the music and life of Prince.Β  The experience takes visitors through 10 multidimensional rooms that walk them through the iconic singer’s life, creative evolution, and classic sound in a new and illuminating way.

From the moment you walk in striking images showcasing the icon are all around. Each room gives fans a different sensory experience through light, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.Β  You can can step inside the Purple Rain album cover and rev up the beloved motorcycle, mix an iconic greatest hit in Prince’s beloved Paisley Park workspace Studio A; and let loose on the dance floor with an audio visual dance party designed by Prince’s lighting designer, Roy Bennett.

Superfly partnered with The Prince Estate to create this special experience. On collaborating with The Prince Estate, Chief Operating Officer of Superfly, Richard Gay told the Knockturnal, “It was unbelievable just for the stories, history, and just as a fan-I feel really privileged to be a part of this.”

Authenticity was also centered in the creation of this experience. “It was important to work with the estate because authenticity is everything to us at Superfly and it’s about the fans. To be there with the estate and go “this is how it really was…this is what happened and collectively come together to create something like this is incredible.”

In The Hamptons: Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Hamptons Garden Gala

We were in The Hamptons this weekend for the The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation’s second annual Hamptons Garden Gala on August 13th at Patricia and Roger Silverstein’s Water Mill home, which was an intimate benefit, actually more in the nature of a festive dinner party at home with friends and friends of friends.

The heart of the gala which was chaired and hosted by the Silversteins and Vice chaired by Marc Leder, Doug Donaldson, Jean Shafiroff, Susan Shin, Maria Fishel and Pamala Wright along with generous support from Balmain, Ameōn Skincare and Libbie Mugrabi, was Dr. Camillo Ricordi’s briefing on game-changing developments in the fight to cure diabetes as well ground-breaking stem cell research that has far reaching applications for reversing diabetes and fighting other disease aa well as anti-aging protocols.

The gala also featured a touching and inspiring performance by the Chamber Dance Project, choreographed by award winning Diane Coburn Bruning to the vocals of John Lennon’s Imagine.Β  Roger and Susan Shin were the live auctioneers and one item that was highly sought after were tickets to the Balmain fashion show in Paris! However,Β  there was another package that trumped everything and that was a special package to spend the day with Dr. Ricordi at the DRI in Miami to learn about the work they do and after that dinner the lucky bidder will dine with the brilliant and charming Β doctor.

There was an after party inside the Silverstein’s home at their private β€œnight club” a la St. Tropez, with Roger himself DJ’ing … real estate mogul by day, DJ by night!

Libbie Mugrabi, flew in from London for this gala, on the heels of her Fashion in Motion opening at the V&A museum, turned DRIF into a verb, writing JustDrif in Glitter on her iconic trucker hats which were gifted to everyone in the gift bags!
