On The Scene: Art Basel Makes Triumphant Return to Miami Beach
“Take Your Broken Heart and Turn it Into Art”
Art, NFTs, and the Oceanside…
Lizzo and Issa Rae Help Celebrate Diversity in Art With Chef Kwame And American Express.
The most lit brunch took place in Miami during Art Basel thanks to author and award winning Chef Kwame along with American Express.
It all went down at the fabulous 1 Hotels in South Beach where guests enjoyed delicious food curated by the former Top Chef contestant/judge himself and sounds by DJ Moma.
โYou have everything from chicken and waffles with chili honey, to jerk broccoli tacos to even lobster and salmon rolls and black truffle quiche,โ said Chef Kwame about the food on the menu for the brunch festivities.
Chef Kwame’s impressive credentials include: Forbes 30 under 30 honoree, being named one of Food & Wineโs Best New Chefs, and Esquire Magazineโs 2019 Chef of the Year amongst various others. Not to mention his memoir โNotes from a Young Black Chef,โ is currently being turned into a feature film by A24.
We got to catch up with him at The Savor and Soul event where we talked about his career and got to try his delicious food first hand. Our personal favorite was the egg and steak on a mini croissant dish. That wasnโt the only thing keeping us entertained though. Heads turned when Issa Rae walked into the party.
The HBOโs Insecure creator mixed and mingled with guests before meeting up with Lizzo whoโs appearance at the party also surprised the crowd. Lizzo looked dazzling wearing a purple floral one piece and it wasnโt long before a mini mob follow the two icons around eager to snap pics.
Later that evening Lizzo had a ticketed concert on the beach hosted by American Express as well. Those who might’ve not had tickets for the concert got to see a little glimpse of her at the brunch gathering.
It isn’t everyday you could say you brunched with Lizzo, and Issae Rae amongst the other notable attendees. Not to mention eating bomb food from Chef Kwame. Shout out to American Express!
I do not know about everyone else, however, I am just now recuperating from the beautiful craziness that is Art Basel. ย Now that I’ve come up for air let’s talk recaps.
For those that haven’t seen the events, celebs, and artists parading all over your social media feed, Art Basel 2021 took place this past weekend in Miami. ย Believe it or not, I met a group of ppl visiting who had absolutely no idea that Art Basel was even taking place. ย No shade to them or anyone reading this who didn’t know. ย Anyway, let’s move on. ย There were tons of exhibits, panels, and parties, highlighting and celebrating artists from all around the world. ย Yet the art wasn’t the only site to see. ย Just as impressive and may be as important as the art its self were the venues. ย I’m taking some of the most sort-out & exclusive venues. ย Add sexy &ย luxurious to the description and you’ve got The Ritz Carlton South Beach!
This is where Roc Nation and Modern Luxury’s new multimedia platform, EDITIONโs launch party took place. ย The VIP launch event featured aย wideย array of celebrities, cultural tastemakers, and influencers includingย Vic Mensa,ย Ray J,ย Dreamdoll, Dez Bryant,ย Romeo Okwara, Tafia, and more. ย Roc Nation superstar Dixsonย wowed guests with an incredibly electrifying performance. ย Maeta followed with an equally beautiful soulful set that captivated the crowd. ย DโUSSE was on deck as the official drink sponsor. ย They provided party-goers with specialty cocktails throughout the entire night. ย Also guests, including myself, got to experience complimentary manicures from the Bernadette Thompson Collection.
Lastly, I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the inaugural issue featuring cover superstar, the incomparable and beautifulย Issa Rae. ย This first issue serves as a very limited edition coffee table book, free of ads and full of exclusively, stunninglyย curated content. ย So excited to see what else this new multimedia platform has in store. ย Be sure to follow Edition on IG @editionmodlux

On Thursday, December 2nd, 2021 Mass Appeal and Showtime presented a private viewing of the HIPHOP50 pop-up experience. Located in Tribeca, this exhibit pays homage to late photographer Ricky Powell, Video Music Box, and Showtime documentaryย Rolling Like Thunder. Any fans of that classic New York or 90s era of hip-hop should definitely visit the exhibit. The exhibit is open to the public December 3rd- December 19th, 2021.ย
The first installation mimics scenes similar to Washington Square Park. There is a Frozade stand, several park benches and classic memorabilia and merchandise from the 1990s. Visitors have a section where they can watch break dancers and fully immerse themselves in a blast from the past. This installation was a beautiful tribute to the inspiration and influences of Ricky Powell. All lovers of photography will definitely resonate with this exhibit!
The second installation is a VIP section backstage at a hip-hop concert. The attention to detail is completely breathtaking! The VIP section contains old-school televisions, and a cardboard figure of Video Music Box host Ralph McDaniels. The Video Music Box station is very immersive and you can even use the microphone to create your own โshoutoutsโ similar to those that artists did back in the day! All avid fans of hip-hop concerts from the 90โs should particularly take a liking to this exhibit.
The third and final installation pays tribute to showtime documentaryย Rolling Like Thunder. This room allows guests to have an up-close and personal view of the railyards. It contains gravel, graffiti and train tracks. There is a beautiful gallery of notable freight train graffiti artists that was curated by director Roger Gastman. This installation is interactive as well and you can tag the wall with your own form of graffiti so others can see your own personal creations! If you love art and graffiti, you will definitely appreciate this viewing!
The exhibit encompasses all things that helped develop the creation of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is more than just a genre, it is a culture. Created in New York, this exhibit helps older hip-hop fans remember the era when hip-hop was at what some consider its peak, and newer hip-hop fans to appreciate the history and richness of its culture. The HIPHOP50 pop-up experience is interactive and fun to walk through. Anyone who considers themselves a lover of hip-hop should definitely come visit the exhibit before December 19th! The address is 381 Broadway New York, NY 10013 open from 3pm-7pm EST.

Deserts and drinks were served with the 3 Whipshot flavors – vanilla, caramel, and mocha – to showcase the boozy whip cream can be enjoyed in cocktails, deserts, or even as a solo shot.
There to prove it was not only renowned Las Vegas mixologist Rob Floyd who put on a show to wow the crowd, but also Cardi herself going around the crowd and spraying shots of Whipshots into guestsโ mouths.

While some stars opt for tequila or wine brands Cardiโs choice of product was emphasized when she told Billboard, โIโm not really a hardcore liquor-drinking person. And I like things that are sexy and tasty.โ Boujee and boozy, Whipshots contain 10% alcohol so you already know you can expect a party in every can. Not only that but they also don’t require refrigeration.
Whipshot will be available nationwide and on shelves across the U.S starting next year but if you want to get your hands on one sooner check out Whipshots.com to get your fix.
NTWRK Announces A Two-Day Virtual Art Fair Of Rule Breakers & Mark Makers ‘BEYOND THE STREETS’ [Interview]
NTWRK, North Americaโs premier livestream shopping platform, announced the return of BEYOND THE STREETS, a two-day virtual art fair focused on graffiti, street art, and more. The fairโs second virtual edition, slated for December 1 & 2, 2021, will once again be curated by Roger Gastman, BEYOND THE STREETS founder and longtime champion of graffiti as a contemporary art form. Cleon Peterson, the LA-based artist whose paintings show clashing figures in a struggle between power and submission, will serve as BEYOND THE STREETS artistic director and will also create exclusive products for BEYOND THE STREETS.
BEYOND THE STREETS will feature an unprecedented lineup of world-class artists, designers, and brands, including Bert Krak, CB Hoyo, DABSMYLA with Late Lunch, MADSAKI, Mike GIANT, Mister Cartoon, Takashi Murakami, POSE, Shepard Fairey, Spacebrat and Wild Style with Vic Mensa all debuting new work โ including paintings, sculptures, limited-edition prints, skate decks, drawings, and more. The fair will launch exclusive products across fine art, collectibles, apparel, and home goods, and offer unique content experiences from around the world throughout the event.
โBringing Roger Gastmanโs renowned in-person event to NTWRKโs virtual sphere last year was a perfect fit for the NTWRK audience,โ NTWRK CEO Aaron Levant says. โBEYOND THE STREETSโ appreciation and respect for street culture is palpable; the art is visceral and exciting. Itโs a celebration of pop culture, the artists, and their storiesโweโre delighted to host this amazing experience again.โ
โNTWRKโs global platform provides BEYOND THE STREETS the technology and accessibility to push the culture of graffiti & street art forward to an audience larger than ever before,โ says Roger Gastman. This yearโs virtual Art Fair will dive deeper into our favorite artistโs worlds and what inspires them with behind-the-scenes content and exclusive artwork drops.โ
BEYOND THE STREETS 2020 featured more than 300 exclusive products and over 100 artists and brands, including industry luminaries like FUTURA2000, Felipe Pantone, Guerrilla Girls, Kenny Scharf, Mister Cartoon, Pushead, Shantell Martin, and Shepard Fairey. The festival drew hundreds of thousands of shoppers and led to increased awareness for many artists and product creators.
Check out our exclusive interviews below:
CLEON PETERSON:
How did you get involved with this fair?
Roger invited me to be a part of the event. I’ve been friends with Roger for years and participated in every BEYOND THE STREETS. Roger is a cultural anthropologist and BEYOND THE STREETS is the product of that investigation. The artists here share a special kinship and follow a long tradition of being a voice from the other side. Many times the artists have been invisible or overlooked. But if you look closely, these artists have been actively addressing the issues of our times from within culture. It’s about mark-making, space, language, music, fashion, class, race, gender, and a true celebration of how our differences create ripples that profoundly influence culture and history from the underground.ย
What is your role/responsibility as artistic director?
I lent my style and work to the look of the thing. I talked a bit with some other artists, listening to their stories and sharing mine.
How did you get your start in art?
I was cursed an artist. I was living happy and free, then one day, I woke up with the desire to do something meaningful in this world. It’s been a real problem because that job fills your soul with constant questions and doubt. I don’t know who laid the curse on me, but it’s been a problem for years.
Who are important mentors in your career?ย
It’s strange, and I just realized this, but BEYOND THE STREETS offers a perfect illustration to answer this question. I know all these artists, and we’ve all been on this ride together, influencing, supporting, sometimes bickering with one another. I have an entire lifetime of relationships with people like this. We all feel like we’re working in our caves alone, then one day, we look up and realize we’re part of something bigger. I always wanted to be part of something bigger than just myself. That’s the point I can stand back and see that I draw inspiration from the people around me, the people that came before, the people that came after me, all in all, the company I’ve kept throughout this life.ย
ROGER GASTMAN:
ย
How were artists selected to participate in the fair?ย
We are working with over 75 artists with roots in graffiti and street art or who draw inspiration from it. There work has evolved into highly disciplined studio practices, theyโve gone on to have fantastic careers and are now showcased in museums and gallerys across the world. As in years past, weโre continuing to celebrate the endless creativity and imagination of these artists. The world of graffiti and street art is incredibly broad, not only in its range of mediums but also in the diversity of its talent. One of the reasons why we decided to partner with NTWRK last year for the showโs first virtual iteration, and its return this year, is because they strive to provide a platform for emerging and diverse talent.
ย
What do you hope attendees take away from attending the virtual event?
One of the main benefits of the showโs return virtually is the accessibility and ease for a larger audience. You donโt have to live near a major museum or gallery to participate in the show. Weโre releasing a number of in-depth video conversations between our emcee J Balvin and artists such as Cleon Peterson (who is also the showโs Artistic Director), DABSMYLA, Gustavo Zermeรฑo Jr. and Estevan Oriol, which dive into the artistโs studio practice and their creative process. Itโs an opportunity for fans and those who might not be as familiar or are curious to learn more about the art form and also purchase pieces from the leading artists.

Whatโs next for you & BEYOND THE STREETS?ย
Weโre continuing to push the conversation of graffiti and street art as a contemporary art form further. We are planning on expanding the show and bringing it to new cities across the world. Stay tuned for more on that soon.ย
I also have a documentary, ROLLING LIKE THUNDER, that dives into the secret underground world and history of freight train and graffiti culture, uncovering stories of myth-like artists, competitive graffiti crews, and battles with the institution premiering on SHOWTIME on December 17th.
Are you ready for the next revolution when it comes to entertainment?
