After two sold-out nights supporting Hilary Duff at Madison Square Garden, La Roux traveled downtown on Aug. 6 to spin some new tracks.

Hosted at Jean’s and supported by 22, La Roux’s pop-up DJ set featured some of the Grammy Award-winning artist’s familiar favorites and unreleased songs from her upcoming album Old Flames, which releases on Nov. 6. This pop-up set followed a similar July 9 set at Los Angeles’ Catch One.

The announcement of Old Flames is half a decade in the making, with “Cabin Fever” being the first single La Roux released since “Supervision” in 2020. La Roux has said the new project reflects her ongoing self-reflection and coming to terms with the current version of herself, from processing heartbreak to navigating sexuality and public identity.

Loungegoers bounced and finger-flicked to the set’s opening singles “Cabin Fever” and “Babyline,” where La Roux tackles self-isolation and doubt: “How can I ever get it right if I am my own enemy?” The ‘90s-sounding, R&B influenced sounds bled seamlessly into the rest of La Roux’s set, where she mixed songs like Midnight Magic’s “Beam Me Up” and Simian Mobile Disco’s “Hustler” and the Skream remix of her song “In For The Kill.”

Near the end of the set, La Roux introduced an unreleased track from Old Flames called “Night Vision” before closing out with some of her breakout hits. Under Jean’s’ moody red lights and strobes, the crowd perked up for “I’m Not Your Toy” and, of course, the classic set-closer “Bulletproof,” which had everyone screaming the iconic chorus: “This time maybe I’ll be bulletproof.”

La Roux is touring with Hilary Duff on the “lucky me tour” until Oct. 29, with stops in the United States, Europe and Australia. Information about tickets and her upcoming project Old Flames are available on her site.
