Kebabishq, a new East Village gem from the creators of Ishq and Gazab, recently opened 2nd avenue. We stopped by to chat with the founders on their vision for the restaurant, and of course, to sample some of their delicious kebabs.
Kebabishq specializes in Indian kebabs, blending traditional South Asian spices with the techniques and methods originating in the Middle East. This style of kebabs are known as Seekh Kebabs, and they illustrate the beauty of cross-cultural collaboration and culinary flourishing in ancient times.
The storefront is perched on a bustling East Village avenue, its golden-orange glow stands out in the evening light as you walk up to try some kebabs. Their space is incredibly cool – a menu you can read from the street that draws you in, a neon sign saying “Kebabishq” in Hindi lettering stretches across the ceiling, and gorgeous wallpaper and wicker chairs. You’re transported from the streetside energy into a beautiful culinary environment.
We sampled the Chicken Seekh Kebab, Malai Kebab, Lamb Seekh Kebab, Lahsooni Shrimp Kebab, Paneer Achari Kebabs, Dahi Puri, and Masala Fries. Everything was deeply flavorful and perfectly cooked. Their Mango Lassi was perfectly tart, tangy, and not too sweet – an ideal start to the meal.
Perhaps our favorite dish was the Dahi Puri. Delectable puffed Puri with a refreshing and bright yogurt filling. Eat these quickly, both because you’ll want to, and to get maximal crisp. The ultimate starter for a Kebabishq feast. The Kebabs were succulent, each coming with pickled red onions and green chutney. You can get them on their own as a snack or with a bowl of rice / on a roll if you want a meal.
This is the kind of meal you’ll go quiet for, no matter who you’re with. You’ll just want to focus on the pure, delicious flavor and all the combinations of sauces and sides you can try. It’s hard to pick just one favorite, but the shrimp was the most unique for me. And they’re all worth coming back for.
The team behind Kebabishq has been a staple in the Village’s student-driven community for years, and with this opening, they want to be a hub specifically for the students. Where Ishq and Gazab are geared towards all New Yorkers, Kebabishq’s fair pricing and grab-and-go packaging are tailored to the student lifestyle. They told us they are actually planning to lower their already affordable prices even more, which is unheard of in the current age of inflation and the city’s high cost of living – it really illustrates Kebabishq’s commitment to the community they are opening their business in.
Their dedication to student life and their incredible food makes this spot a must-try – essential if you’re in the East Village, and worth a trip to the neighborhood if you’re not.
