Searchlight Pictures’ ‘Fire Island’ dropped on Hulu on June 3 and had its world premiere at NewFest on June 2.
Directed by Andrew Ahn, Fire Island is a modern day rom-com that showcases a diverse and multicultural examination of romance and queerness.
The film is inspired by Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice tale, with the story revolving around two best friends — Joel Kim Booster’s Noah and Bowen Yang’s Howie — who embark on a journey to have a legendary summer adventure along with eclectic friends. The Noah character is based on Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist of Pride and Prejudice, and the Howie character is based on Jane Bennet.
“This movie especially is something that I have been looking forward to for years and years and years,” Bowen Yang shared. “I think people’s preconceived notions about Fire Island have to do with whether or not they feel like they belong there in the first place. But as long as you’re there with people you feel like you belong with, as long as you’re there with people who are your family, then all of that melts away and it doesn’t become relevant anymore. If you’re with your chosen family, you can venture off into any kind of space and I think that’s what the movie is about.”
Watch Fire Island only on Hulu.
