On Wednesday, April 19, the music video for his song ‘Psuedo’ premiered on YouTube. To learn more about Sage’s video and creative process, read the interview below.
The Knockturnal: What was your vision behind the music video?
Casper Sage: My vision behind the music video was just trying to capture the energy of the record. The song to me feels chaotic in a beautiful way. So I just tried to replicate that to make what I understand, easily understandable by more than just me.
The Knockturnal: Do other musicians inspire your music? If so, who?
Casper Sage: Of course. When my mind is good, I’m highly inspired and everything feels exciting and refreshing. Recently, I’ve been getting inspired by Kerry James Marshall, Toro y Moi, and that new King Krule joint.
The Knockturnal: I notice that the color scheme for the video involves many neutral colors. Why did you make that choice?
Casper Sage: I’m just a humongous fan of earth tones and feel like almost every color that pleases me aesthetically is one that I’ve seen in a natural context…earth tones also tend to create awesome palettes.
The Knockturnal: You said that the music and lyrics came together quickly. Does this differ from your typical process?
Casper Sage: The creative process, whenever you’re in tune with it, always moves quickly. Ideas come to your brain and you work to translate them. It came together really quickly because I was chilling with the engineer (Viko Marley) and producer (SEPH) who were in there with me for hours at a time when I was in LA. So we were able to find the promised land pretty quickly as the sonics came together. The space between artist and process often comes down to either not trusting the idea that came to you or not having your tools sharp enough to execute it as quickly as it comes.
The Knockturnal: What is the meaning behind the song’s title?
Casper Sage:The title just came straight from the lyrics and I think the word just catches the eye too.
The Knockturnal: What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
Casper Sage: I just want to keep on getting better technically and creatively. I can’t ask for much more than staying inspired and turning my weaknesses into strengths.
