Tribeca Festival premiered the touching and prolific documentary ‘Guggi’ on June 14.
The intimate portrait of abstract painter Guggi traces his journey from humble Irish beginnings—with friends Bono and Gavin Friday—through his post-punk phase and toward international acclaim as an uncompromising artist. Friends and family came out to support the famed artist including the U2 band member and more.

“Guggi’s fascinating experiences lead him to a withdrawn artist lifestyle, shaped by friendship, trauma, and an uncompromising commitment to art,” says film critic Dan Hunt. “Guggi’s work explores the depictions of everyday objects with a focus on repetition and abstraction, his signature motifs of bowls and other vessels freed of their context. Director Thuillier’s patient exploration immerses the viewer in Guggi’s creative process and completed works.”
The evening at SVA Theater in Manhattan celebrated his work and lifetime of bringing the world a vision that is needed and appreciated.
“Seeing where and how an idea comes from here onto a screen is the creative process I love seeing,” film director Ian Thuillier about his incredible achievement on the film.
Producers on the film include Thuillier and Gabriella Janni. The documentary features interviews and reflections from a dynamic cast including Guggi, Bono, Gavin Friday, Jim Sheridan, Mannix Flynn, Sean Scully, Kelly Grovier, Dave-id Busaris,. Christina Kennedy, Tia-Thuy Nguyen, Gabriella Janni, Jon Wood, Reggie ‘The Dog’ Manuel and Kazuhito Yoshii.
