Exclusive: Sage The Gemini Talks ‘Good Thing,’ Working With Nick Jonas & More

TheKnockturnal had the pleasure of interviewing multi-platinum rapper, songwriter and producer Sage the Gemini on what it was like collaborating with other creatives in the industry and what to expect from the release of his second full length album.

Tell us a little bit about your new song “Good Thing.”

It was a crazy experience actually. I was working with Max Martin in a camp out here in Los Angeles and it’s just a different environment, LA period. Long story short, I came in here, I wasn’t very confident because this is not my lane really, hopefully in the future it will be my lane, but I was just being a student of the game, working with Savan Kotecha, just watching him create the top 40 kind of records … and so I went in there, I did my thing … They were trying to get me to do the chorus and I was like “nah,” and we were were talking about some artists to get on there and I brought up Nick Jonas and they were like “Yeah, Man,” I think we could do that and I was like “what?,” so later that night Nick comes in, he records.

What was it like working with Nick Jonas?

He’s a funny person, very down to earth, sophisticated guy, he’s very to himself, he’s a shy kind of person, but once he gets talking he gets talking.

You also have a single with Trey Songz “Guantanamera,” what was it like collaborating with him as well?

It’s always good to work with someone that I look up to. While he was next door, me and P-Lo were doing this beat … and I did my verse, and I did everything so fast and I said “you know what, I need Trey Songz” on this … I was like I got this song I want you hear, played it for him, everyone starting nodding their heads … he came in and he free styled the whole thing!

“GDFR” with Flo Rida has been a huge hit, can you reflect a little on the success ?

I remember when I first got signed, I had a big hit but I really didn’t know who I was or where I sat … I was on the red carpet at the VMA’s and I turn and I see Katy Perry. I turn again and everyone starts screaming, everything is in slow motion I hear “oh my god, it’s Sage the Gemini.” … I never thought I would be as big as where I’ve gotten. Flo Rida has always been nice to me … and everyone’s creative minds came together … and it was just a blessing to be on a song with Flo Rida.

What can fans expect from this new album?

Expect the unexpected.
