From the man behind the ultra-popular show Money Heist, Alex Pina brings in another chart-topping Netflix series. White Lines, which is set in the beautiful Spanish island of Ibiza, revolves around the disappearance and mysterious murder of Axel Collins – a reckless DJ from Manchester.
The show mainly takes place in the present-day but switches back and forth with flashbacks of the life Axel used to have in Ibiza. In the present, his sister Zoe jets off to the island 20 years after her brother’s death determined to figure out who killed him.
“It’s a rollercoaster of life. It’s parties, it’s music, it’s murder, it’s Big Little Lies meets Desperate Housewives with a twist of Spanish campiness and incredible photography and amazing electronic music,” said Marta Milans. “It’s everything that we can’t do right now because of the lockdown all into one show.”
Milans, the talented Spanish Actress who plays, Kika, Axel Collins’ former girlfriend couldn’t have summed it up any better. The Knockturnal had the pleasure of chatting with her and finding out more about her character, production in Ibiza, working with creator Alex Pina, amongst many other things.
Actually hailing from Ibiza and having already worked with Pina before on a show called The Pier, accepting the role for White Lines seemed like a no brainer. “Kika was pretty much like an extension of me,” explained Milans who’s family actually still has a home in Ibiza. “When we were filming I had a bunch of the cast stay with me and we really bonded in a truthful way that really informs the characters.”
Her character, in particular, becomes really close to Zoe and she supports her in trying to piece together Axel’s disappearance. For Milans it was also important that White Lines didn’t glorify the sex, drugs, and hard-partying lifestyle Ibiza is known for. She felt like that narrative has been overdone and the messages behind White Lines are much more than that.
Season one of White Lines premiered on Netflix May 15. Careful though, you will almost certainly be wishing you were poolside in Ibiza and it’ll have you looking up Airbnb’s for a post-lockdown vacay. Until then you can binge and be whisked away throughout the 10 episodes.
