We attended a special screening of the latest episode of HBO’s “Divorce.” Things seem to be getting more awkward with new ex’s Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Robert (Thomas Haden Church) in season 2.
The cast of “Divorce” sat down with Susan Morrison from The New Yorker at The Paley Center to discuss all things divorce couples go through every day in real life. That is why this show is so great, it shows the harsh and comedic reality that couples go through in order to maintain a relationship for the sake of their children after splitting up.
In season one, it’s more of a “divorce college” as Church puts it and then in season two, it’s all about being independent of each other.
Executive producer, Sarah Jessica Parker, shared amazing behind the scenes stories about bringing the comedy hit to life. She talked about the 1970’s soundtrack and choosing to film in Hastings-on-Hudson with the rest of the hilarious cast Church, Molly Shannon (Diane), Talia Balsam (Dallas), and Tracy Letts (Nick).
“To me, it’s brave when people uncouple when it’s not meant to be… I just feel proud to be a character who is in a crazy marriage,” said Shannon.
“The show makes it effortless that most people shouldn’t be married, don’t we all feel that most people shouldn’t be married,” said Letts who plays Diane’s husband in the show. “I think we attached a negative connotation to the word (divorce).”
In the screening of the latest show, SJP shows us what it is like trying to find everything wrong with your ex’s new boo and the rules of when to introduce your kids to them. Frances has her best friends spy for her and also goes jogging in their neighborhood.
After the screening, the audience asked the cast to describe their character in one word. Thomas Hayden Church said “lost,” while SJP chooses “uncertain.” So be sure to catch these two former lovebirds and their struggling road of divorce on Sundays on HBO at 10 pm.
