Tribeca Film Festival Exclusive: Grace Van Patten & Emily Mortimer Talk ‘Good Posture’

Set in current day Brooklyn, “Good Posture” is the gentle comedy story of a lazy but charming and beautiful young woman who has got used to using men to make her life easier, but after finally pushing one man too far, is forced to discover that she can live a happier life by taking responsibility for herself and not rely on those around her as easy props.

We spoke with some of the cast at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere. Check out our interviews below:

The Knockturnal: Tell us a little bit about your role.

Grace Van Patten: It’s a very nice slice of life movie, following this girl who’s kind of gotten by her whole life and is faced with reality once she gets dumped by her boyfriend. Who she moved to New York for. And she develops this really great relationship with the woman she moves in with; this reclusive, amazing writer. And she starts to make a documentary film about her.

The Knockturnal: How was working with Emily Mortimer?

Grace Van Patten: It was amazing. She’s actually my neighbor in real life. So it was so great to work with her and Dolly, I worked with before, she played my mom in a play. So, I didn’t have to hear anything except that she was doing it and I was in. So, it was very fun.

The Knockturnal: So, Dolly Wells is the director and the writer. What was it like working with someone who did both on their project?

Grace Van Patten: She just effortlessly made it such a comfortable environment and I think because she wrote it, she was even extra passionate about it.

The Knockturnal: What do you love most about your character?

Grace Van Patten: Hmm, good question. She’s very comfortable in her skin but too comfortable at times. And I think throughout the movie … she has a lot to learn. But she has a lot of potential.

The Knockturnal: So, Dolly’s obviously a longtime friend and collaborator of yours, so was it just an instant yes to be involved?

Emily Mortimer: Yes, yes, she didn’t even have to tell me what the part was, but she had told me the story of the movie, when we sat on my bed together and she just described the pitch for the film before she started writing it and it made me cry. And so I knew I was gonna love it and that I wanted to be part of it and I knew she’d be brilliant at it, as she is about everything that she touches.

The Knockturnal: Did she write if for you essentially? Or with you in mind?

Emily Mortimer: Well she said she didn’t. She’s so sweet about that and says that she just sort of was too scared to even think that I would do it, but I was too shy to even ask if there was a part for me. And then she said, “Will you be in it?” And I was like, “Yes! I’ll just do anything to be part of it!” and I’m so happy I am, I want to be directed by her again and again, only her!

The Knockturnal: How was working with Grace?

Emily Mortimer: Grace is my next door neighbor and Grace’s sister is friends with my daughter. May is my daughter and Grace’s sister is called June, and so May and June are next door neighbors and really adore each other. So yeah, it was like family, the whole thing felt like family.

The Knockturnal: And what’s the dynamic between the two characters?

Emily Mortimer: Well she’s this young, beautiful girl who’s quite entitled and spoiled and comes into my house and is slightly flirting with my husband, and I’m this reclusive novelist.
