Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, and Javier Botet star in the film The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which was released in theaters on August 11th.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter focuses on a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, which tells the story of how he arrived from Carpathia to London. This film breaks down the story of the merchant ship Demeter, tasked with transporting 50 unmarked wooden crates to England. During the crew’s travel, they realized they’d soon reach their demise as strange events would happen each night due to the mysterious presence aboard the ship. The Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, charred and wrecked, with no trace of the crew in sight.
Over the years, fans have seen Dracula in various adaptations that have portrayed him as a narcissist, lover, stalker, serial killer, jokester, etc. These adaptations of the book commonly gloss over the voyage of the Demeter, but this film reminds fans of The Captain’s Log and the crew’s fearful journey. The Knockturnal spoke with Hawkins, Cunningham, and Dastmalchian about the film and what it meant for them to be a part of this adaptation. They also discussed their characters and what they hope fans will enjoy about the film.
