Exclusive: Selling Tampa Cast Discusses Black Women in Luxury and more

by Katherine Tinsley December 13, 2021
written by Katherine Tinsley

December 15 Netflix will premier Selling Sunet spin-off series Selling Tampa

The new reality television series differs from the original in many ways such as the location, property differences, and the obvious difference of being a cast of all Black and Brown women. The Selling Sunset spinoff is the embodiment of #Blackgirlmagic, and is a refreshing contrast to the images typically shown of women of color on reality television. Selling Tampa shows the diversity of Black femininity, Black female empowerment, Black sisterhood, and Black professionalism.

The depiction of women of color on reality television has been critiqued since the genre’s inception, and shifting those narratives is an unexpected surprise. When deciding to film the show the cast unanimously agreed that the ability to highlight women of color in a professional setting and succeeding in a luxury market was important. Representation and how communities are represented is important, and the ability for young girls to see a group of women of color dominate the Florida luxury market is important to see.

Viewers will see that the Allure Realty team functions as a family and though they might have their disagreements, the love and support they have for each other can be felt both in the show and during their interview. The drama that occurs on the show, unlike its predecessor, feels similar to sibling arguments, rivalries, and makeups.

Founder and CEO Sharelle Rosado is a military veteran, and after serving her country she took the skills and dedication she learned and put that energy towards real estate. Today, Sharelle is one of Florida’s top producing real estate agents, and has created a real estate brokerage that gives other women of color access to the luxury real estate market.

The trailer can be found below, and make sure to watch Selling Tampa on Netflix December 15.

Exclusive: Shane Johnson Talks Powerbook II: Ghost

by Julian Cannon December 12, 2021
written by Julian Cannon

Powerbook II:Ghost’s Shane Johnson has played the Cooper Saxe character since the original Power series. Once made it his mission to take down the St. Patrick family, is now currently defending them. Saxe paired up with Davis MacLean (Method Man) in order to do so while also continuing his career. In this exclusive interview, I speak with Shane Johnson about the current storylines on the second season of Powerbook II: Ghost while he also gives his thoughts about the show being picked up for a third season.

The Knockturnal: You worked with Michael Rainey Jr. from when he was younger to his current age.

SJ: “it’s been really cool working with Michael because i’ve gotten to see him since he was twelve when he started on the original show. He’s really grown into a fine actor. and a great dude. We have a lot of fun. We’re friends. I could be his dad age wise. It’s been really cool to see him develop to the point where he’s carrying a show now. I think he’s a pretty formidable force on screen.”

The Knockturnal: It was announced earlier this week that Powerbook II: Ghost got renewed for a third seasion. How excited were you once you got the news?

SJ: “It’s been such an incredible ride being on this show. This will be nine years playing the same character for me. So it’s been such a blessing and I’m so thankful to the Power Universe gods that are really Courtney A. Kemp and 50 Cent. The other thing that’s kind of cool is that every year, it’s not the same. Every year layers are added and the characters get more complex. You’ve watched the show from the beginning, you know the Cooper Saxe has gone from more of a two dimensional sort of character that was really designed to be a thorn in Angela’s side to now all these years later, a guy that’s really complex that kind of waffles on both sides of the law. And it’s gotten himself a little bit into the dark side now with Davis MacClean (Method Man).  He’s got a love interest and his family that pulls him in different directions. You know, he’s got a lot of complexity now. And every year there’s another layer added and it gets more and more rewarding to play and to explore.”

The Knockturnal: Now I want to bring up Saxe’s love interest because Saxe is the one defending the St. Patrick family now and the love interest is the one with the other team that’s trying to figure out the murder case. What we see these two characters clash over this soon?

SJ: “Well, it certainly seems like already they are hiding things from each other. In the scene that took place this week, you know, the sort of bedroom scene you see Cooper get some information from her and it immediately put it to use, you know? So I can’t imagine that friction and that sort of playing both sides of this by being involved with her doesn’t complicate issues, you know? I think the real challenge is going to be if that piece of information does blow up in their face, it’s going to call into question their ethics and what kind of people they really are. How they respond to this situation, I think will say a lot about their characters.”

The Knockturnal: We also saw Zeke being interviewed live on TV. When these interviews happen, it is Live TV meaning that there is no double takes or stopping. Zeke tried his best to not give off the impression that he knew about the murder case but it felt flat and the public eye will think otherwise about this athlete. What was your reaction to seeing this scene?

SJ: “I think that situation with him is really getting in deep. And he’s being questioned by the detective who I think does a fantastic job. Jeff Hephner is just a fantastic actor. You can see that he’s getting to Zeke and starting to like play inside of Zeke’s head. Zeke is starting to realize what his family is and he’s in a dangerous spot. that is a very interesting comment too on where we are at right now in our culture where everything is so immediate and everything is so recorded like I’m reminded of a scene a couple of episodes ago where there’s that character that comes up to Mecca’s loft and he’s filming and he’s like ‘Oh yeah, look at his oh, snap, look where I’m at right now’ while he’s doing Instagram Live. And Mecca shuts it down and breaks his hand in half. It just shows you the mentality of the different generations too. That’s one of the cool things about our show as well as you have. Different generations kind of with different mentalities and expectations playing against each other. You know, you got the college age group and then you’ve got these adults who have lived through a couple of generations now and are looking at these kids going, ‘What are you doing?’ I’m 45. I’m sitting here trying to figure out how to do Instagram and I get lost half the time and i am like ‘ Wait, what is this?’ I spend most of my time looking at like cute puppy videos or something. I’m like ‘What am I doing? I got stuff to do and why am I watching puppies run into walls and stuff.'”

Powerbook II: Ghost Season 2, Episode 4 Review

by Julian Cannon December 12, 2021
written by Julian Cannon

This week’s Powerbook II: Ghost was full of secrets and reveals. One at the very end that I know for sure caught viewers off guard.

That huge secret is, Zeke is Mecca’s son. I can say that I was stunned as Monet’s reaction to hearing Mecca say this in front of him. This all happened hours after Zeke’s interview with the journalist on live television went south. The only thing that did, is for the general public to think that Zeke had something to do with the murder of the professor. The attention sure shifted after he walked off. With this ongoing development, I am wondering how the writers will convince us that Monet hid  that secret from everyone including Lorenzo.

Cane had Brayden do two missions for him today with one of them being hilarious. First, Brayden helped Cane to rob a jewelry story. And later in the episode, Cane had Brayden help him dig up Ramierz’s body to not only exonerate Zeke, but to also retrieve his badge. This resulted in Cane planting the badge in Tariq’s desk and I am really interested to see who will be the first one to find it. Will it be Tariq, or will it be the law enforcement? We will have to wait and see.

Another development that is related to the murder of Jabari, is the situation between Saxe and Jenny. Since these two are together, they are also on the opposite sides of the case. What did Saxe do the moment Jenny leaves the room? He goes through her belongings and found Ramirez’s gun. This will be crucial to the case. I am curious to see when these two will clash over this information.

All in all, this is a strong episode as Monet carried most of the episode. The jump scare at the start of this episode set the pacing in motion that this will be the Monet show this week. Be sure to return next week for my continued coverage of Powerbook II: Ghost

Exclusive: Cast Talks Hulu ‘The Great’ Season 2 [video]

by Nastacia Nickolaou December 7, 2021
written by Nastacia Nickolaou

Hulu’s highly anticipated second season of “The Great” is out and fans are already theorizing about what’s next for “Catherine” (Elle Fanning) as she finally takes the Russian throne. It’s revealed that Catherine will battle her husband, “Peter” (Nicholas Hoult) as well as the rest of the cast, “Marial” (Phoebe Fox), “Grigor” (Gwilym Lee),“Arkady” (Bayo Gbadamosi) and “Orlo” (Sacha Dhawan) as she navigates her new life as queen.

The show quickly gained popularity not only due to it’s fantastic screenwriting from the incredible, Tony McNamara’s dry humor — whose best known for “Cruella” and “The Favourite” –  but also because the entire team has been transparent that this periodic series is only “occasionally true.” The show is more focused on the relationships between characters than the historical accuracy which allows the audience to enjoy the comedic tension between characters without worrying about if it actually happened in real life.

We last left off when Catherine was desperately attempting to overthrow her husband Peter III of Russia when he planned to execute her lover “Leo Voronsky” (Sebastian de Souza) in Season One.

The Knockturnal spoke with some of the cast about Season 2 but they were tight lipped at the time of the interview before the show aired. You can watch our exclusive interview with Phoebe Fox, Gwilyn Lee, Bavo Gbadamosi and Sacha Dhawan about coming back for S2 here.

We now know that Season 2 does not start with the gunshot that started the coup in the first place but rather 4 months after it happened. The plot thickens as we see these complex character’s dialogue become more intense on screen. What will Catherine have to do to become truly “Great?” More than she ever thought she would have to.

You can stream seasons 1 and 2 on Hulu now. You can watch the trailer here.

Keke Palmer Talks New Disney Plus Show “Foodtastic”

by Dorissa White December 6, 2021
written by Dorissa White

Keke Palmer strikes again! Palmer hosts a new show coming to Disney Plus this December titled “Foodtastic”. The series will feature competition-like challenges between contestants creating larger-than-life sculptures and artwork with food. The series is set to premiere on Disney + December 15th. The Knockturnal caught up with the actress to talk about her new project.

The Knockturnal: How are you Keke?

Keke Palmer Good. Good to be speaking with you.

The Knockturnal: Good to be speaking with you. I haven’t seen you since, uh, the last time we went viral!

Keke Palmer: Oh my gosh!

The Knockturnal: How are you doing?

Keke Palmer: So good. So good.

The Knockturnal:I was just telling somebody, I said, you are never not working. You stay with a job!

Keke Palmer: Girl. Thank you. I need to sit down somewhere.

The Knockturnal: Well, tell me about this. How does it feel? And, you know, I was, I literally was just saying this, I’m talking to my friend. You are literally on track to becoming like the Oprah of our generation.

Keke Palmer: Oh my gosh. Stop it. Thank you. That. Really, to kind of you to say, I only wish that I could have that level of impact. So I thank you for even seeing a sliver of that in me, but I’m very excited for Foodtastic, very excited. It’s literally a collection of all the things I love from food, art posting and acting or doing sketches. I remember when I first heard about the show from Endemol and Disney, I was okay. food, Foodtastic, art shows, you know, But I had no idea how different it was from other food competition shows. It shows the real aspect that they are creating art pieces, like the kind of sculptures in big extravagant pieces that you would see in a museum, except they were going to be using food and changing food elements to actually create the pieces. So that was like, you know, to me, next level, I knew that people were going to love to watch that.

And I was excited to host that because I love competition and. But then you add an element of also me doing the sketches that kind of set up the stories for our artists to actually then create their art from, you know, whether it was me being a character, a new character in a star wars, IP, or beauty and the beast or toy story.
I mean, that aspect of it really was kind of like putting the icing on the cake, excuse me, because it felt so specific to me as well as, you know, giving the audience something that they’ve never seen before. So I’m excited to see how people are talking.

The Knockturnal: When I was watching the clips I saw, I was like, I absolutely love this.  And it kind of reminded me of like, there’s art in any aspect of life. You know, we kind of feel that way as well?

Keke Palmer: Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, I knew it growing up just like hair shows, going to hair shows with my family. You know what I mean? Back in the day, or, you know, obviously going to theaters and, you know, watching musicals and plays, but I had no idea what people do. No idea what people actually deal with food. That was like, to me again, like you said, when you, when you see something like that, you’re like, wow, there really is something for everything in this world. You know, there really is an avenue in a world, you know, a whole, you know, stratosphere, a hierarchy, you have when they call it for every particular subject.

And it was just so cool that Benny and Amirah knew some of the contestants like, so Benny would be like , “I’ve competed with him before” it’s insane, like you guys have history and stuff like that. Very cool.

The Knockturnal: That is amazing. That is amazing. I’m super, super happy for you.
I wish you nothing but success. You are, like I said, you are, and I’m claiming this now you are literally the Oprah of our generation. So I’m just so blessed to talk to you again. And, you know, you always have really good energy and just such a bright light. So, you know, just congratulations of all, everything that is to come.

Keke Palmer: Thank you so much, girl. And I can’t wait till next time I see you. Hopefully we go viral again, girl.

The Knockturnal: All right, I’ll talk to you later, Keke.

Keke Palmer: Bye-bye. Thank you.
