HBO Maxβs βRap Sh!t,β which premieres tonight, is a lot of things: Itβs incredibly funny, itβs rousing,Β itβs gorgeous. But itβs also one of the most visually innovative shows on television.
Director Sade Clacken Joseph, who is a dear friend, creates a visual language here thatβs all about immediacy. We see shots from the perspective of a phone, entire scenes feature IG Live overlays and some transitions are so deft youβll miss them if you blink.
This approach makes for a show that feels like youβre living inside it. Youβre the 21st century fly on the wall, not only a viewer but a participant in the fascinating thrall of these charactersβ lives.
HBOβs premiere event at The Hammer museum proved that the abundant charm and camaraderie present in the show is no farce; I couldnβt tell you how many times I turned to see the cast bursting out in laughter, having heart to hearts, or posing for photos radiating star power.
We took in the first two episodes and I was so upset by the end. They were both so enthralling I needed more. Play the next one, damn.
Our leads Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (Kamillion) are an odd couple who somewhat reluctantly join forces to take on the world, musically speaking.
Their chemistry is effortless, even when their characters are at odds. I also already know this show is gonna spawn real-life bangers; strap in for their first collab, because it will never leave your brain. Sorry!
The premiere wound down and nobody wanted to leave; the dj was cuttin up, the drinks were flowing and the joy was palpable. Turns out friendship is the hottest bar of all.

Prime Video, who hosted the event, supplied guests with a plethora of hors d’oeuvres and an open bar before guests were ushered upstairs to the rooftop where the screening took place. Notable guests in attendance were Hayley Law (Riverdale), Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), and Isabella Ferreira (Orange is the New Black).

The film follows a down-on-her-luck young woman named Xiomara, played by Jalesa Marks. Xiomara is struggling to turn her life around and impress her esteemed father working for an infamous corporation. As she continues to perform tasks for the company, she struggles to break free from her anxiety feeling as though there is no escape.
As many young professionals have seen, the standards of work ethic and face time set by corporations lead to increased anxiety and a diminished sense of self-worth. gallery explores this notion in Genesis XΒ by outlining the pressures Xiomara faces from the corporation while also outlining the parental pressures that come with said performance. Stylistically, gallery also illustrates these tensions through Xiomara’s body language, a strong cinematic color palette, and action scenes. The film’s musical efforts, led by William Anthony, also create a palpable sense of stress as we see Xiomara struggle to reconcile her work and her emotions.

During the Q&A with gallery and the cast, the discussion centered around the anxieties and pressures of corporate life. The open dialogue was refreshing given mental health is still seen as a taboo subject. Take away from the night? There is a little Xiomara in all of us, but perhaps there is an escape if we continue to de-stigmatize mental health.
