Film Review: ‘Anything’s Possible’

by Thalia Mendez August 14, 2022
written by Thalia Mendez

From one’s mindset to the TV screen, Billy Porter has amazed us yet again with another film that has the fans astonished by the relatability, creativity and fashion displayed in his new movie “Anything’s Possible.” Held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music the highly anticipated screening was accompanied by cast members Eva Reign and Abubakar Ali along with press, viewers, family and friends.

The film which has been released to the public July 22, 2022  follows Kelsa, a fashionable transgender high school senior played by Eva Reign cruising her way through her last year of high school while finding more about herself and others around her. Reign’s character in the film uses her free time racking up YouTube subscribers as she shares her story being a young transgender teen in today’s society while also timidly falling for her classmate Khal (Abubaker Ali). Kelsa, whose name originates from the English language “Bravery” has a distinct connection with animals. In the film, she uses the animal names to reflect their eccentric traits. Given the names of each animal they all coincide with the headline “Anythings Possible!”

The film was supported by fans all over the world, many fans including the LGBTQIA+ community shouted out their love for the movie stating that it gave them a sense of familiarity seeing a character like them play as the center stage of the cinema. With wonderful feedback from spectators, one can say the film was a success! With films such as “Anything’s Possible” director Billy Porter certainly sticks to the headline and drives his viewers to live out their wildest dreams, accomplish set goals and stay true to one’s self while doing it fashionably and effortlessly!

HBO Releases True Crime Documentary ‘Mind Over Murder’

by Liam Wamba August 14, 2022
written by Liam Wamba

HBO Max is supporting local theater in its recent genre bending docuseries, Mind Over Murder. Of all the arts, theater has a unique relationship with public memory. Mind Over Murder is a six-part series about a gruesome murder and a play put on by local actors about the trial. Director Nanfu Wang’s past documentaries have also interwoven the public, private, and memory. One Child Nation focuses on China’s one child policy, while looking at Nanfu’s own experience as a mother. Hooligan Sparrow is about sexual assault through the lens of Nanfu’s childhood experiences with sex workers. Mind Over Murder covers the creation and performance of a play along with the trial and exoneration of the Beatrice Six. An exoneration due to DNA evidence and improper police conduct. The victim’s family formed a close relationship with the original investigator. Along with many residents of Beatrice, they maintained the guilt of the Six.

The docuseries is loosely structured into three parts. The first two episodes start with Burt Searcey, the original investigator of the Six. Currently a flower shop owner, he’s still a paragon of Beatrice. Episodes three and four focus on the Beatrice Six; their lives, their conviction, and their exoneration. The last two episodes are about mistakes made in the original investigation, plus show night for the play, Gage County, Nebraska.

Theater has a long history of avoiding censorship with artistic license to rehash social issues. Rehashing the murder of Helen Wilson and the trial of the Beatrice Six was widely rejected by the inhabitants of Beatrice. One facebook user said that the actors of the Community Players Theatre were just as bad as the Six who murdered Helen Wilson. One said the same thing that happened to Helen should happen to them. Helen Wilson’s family sat front row during the play. After the exoneration the Beatrice Six were awarded 28.1$ million from Gage County. Money that the county did not have. Most of the audience paid higher taxes because of six characters on stage.

It’s clear from everyone they had a bad reputation before the murder. The seedy character of the Six was the initial reason they were under investigation. Three Beatrice residents in a barber shop question why they were awarded so much more money in the civil suit than they would have made outside of prison. Public opinion about the trial played out through its own hometown characters.

Cecilia Rubino directed Gage County, Nebraska. We spoke about the play as an act of performative therapy. The performance attempted to be as realistic as possible, taking dialogue straight from the interrogation tapes. Simultaneously, Cecilia says that at the heart of the therapy is an escape from objective truth. The product is a performance of a marginalized perspective, heard from a human voice.

Cecilia emphasized that Gage County, Nebraska was an exercise, not an attempt to change the narrative. Elsewhere director Nanfu Wang spoke about being wary of the power she has as a documentary filmmaker to rewrite communal history. Helen Wilson’s grandson, Stan Wilson, was one of the family members who attended the play. In the last episode, he spoke about having to feel the Six’s innocence before believing it. During Gage County, Nebraska he felt it. I was struck by what theater was revealing about how deeply the non-rational shapes history.

Mind Over Murder explores the scale of performative therapy on an entire county. Cecilia and I spoke about how difficult it is to find funding for theater. HBO’s support of Gage County, Nebraska is a major endorsement of the artform. It’ll be interesting to watch new genres emerge, with further collaborations between streaming platforms and theater.

Film Review: “The Roundup” another kick-ass success for Don Lee

by Joshua A. Guttman August 9, 2022
written by Joshua A. Guttman

Don Lee is badass

Ever since I first saw Don Lee in Train to Busan, I’ve followed his career like a hawk. In an era of more character-oriented action films, he feels like a throwback to larger-than-life action heroes of the 80s. Films like The Champion and The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil perfectly showcase how Don Lee’s comic timing, size, and charisma make him the perfect action hero, potentially up there with Arnold Schwartzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, or Jason Statham. American audiences more familiar with Don Lee as Gilgamesh in The Eternals would have fun checking out his filmography, and today’s film may be a solid place to start. With his latest film The Roundup, Don Lee seems well on his way to starting his own action franchise.

A sequel to 2017’s The Outlaws, The Roundup, directed by Lee Sang-yong, follows Detective Ma (Don Lee) as he hunts a gang of kidnappers who moved their operation from South Korea to Vietnam. He teams up with his Captain Jeon Il-man (Choi Guy-hwa) and heads to Vietnam to hunt the kidnappers, led by the devious and deadly Kang Hae-sang (Son Sukku). Detective Ma’s nickname is “The Beast Cop,” and Don Lee immediately gives that monicker weight. Every action scene perfectly depicts Detective Ma as a force to be reckoned with. Don Lee uses his size and strength effortlessly, making even the most minimal moves feel excruciatingly painful. You can feel the character’s history through his physicality, but the charm exuded by Don Lee, coupled with a sprinkling of humor, makes the character fun and feel fleshed out.

While the film is a sequel, it does work as a stand-alone film, in the same vein as the Dirty Harry franchise. The film takes a lot of influence from Dirty Harry with its characterization and usage of vigilante cop tropes. Because of this, some may find the story predictable, but the script is well executed in terms of the direction and pacing, carried by strong performances, so I still had fun. The excursion to Vietnam also added an interesting culture clash element to help break up the formula. The action scenes are brutal and intensely choreographed with an effective combination of brawls and martial arts, primarily relying on the brawls. For as good as Don Lee is, Son Sukku is memorably terrifying as Kang Hae-sang. He’s sly, violent, and the direct viciousness of his fight scenes encapsulates him perfectly.

The Roundup is a a fun popcorn flick filled with charismatic performances and exciting action set pieces, all carried by the larger-than-life Don Lee. It’s an excellent introduction to Don Lee, and I highly recommend scouring his filmography for even more gems. While you don’t need to watch The Outlaws first, I also recommend that film too, as it’s a similarly fun film. A third film in the franchise is already in production, and I’m excited to see more Detective Ma films in the U.S.

The Roundup is now playing on VOD

The first film in the franchise, The Outlaws, is available to stream on TubiTV here.

Apple TV+’s new film ‘Luck’ shows us that luck comes in many forms

by Julie Jones August 8, 2022
written by Julie Jones

How far into the Land of Luck would you go to find your friend a forever home? This is the question asked by Luck’s protagonist, Sam Greenfield (voiced by Eva Noblezada), as soon as she came upon Bob, a Scottish black cat (voiced by Simon Pegg) with whom she shared a panini in her local neighborhood.

Directed by Peggy Holmes, Luck is a film that follows Sam, an eighteen year old girl who has just aged out of her foster home. As she leaves to embark on her journey into adulthood, Sam makes it her mission to find her friend, Hazel (voiced by Adelynn Spoon), the forever home she was never able to find for herself. Having come upon a lucky penny after her chance encounter with Bob, Sam happens upon the Land of Luck where she must face leprechauns, dragons, and talking pigs to scrounge as much luck as she can for Hazel.

LOS ANGELES, CA – July 30: Eva Noblezada, Adelynn Spoon, John Ratzenberger and Colin O’Donoghue attend the world premiere of Apple Original Films’ “Luck” at The Regency Village Westwood Theater.

Throughout Sam’s journey to turn her bad luck around, screenwriter Kiel Murray doesn’t just communicate a heartfelt message that life is full of random ups and downs that we must embrace, but also uses five-star talent to convey that message. The film features star-studded cast members such as Jane Fonda (voicing Babe the Dragon), Whoopi Goldberg (voicing The Captain) and John Ratzenberger (voicing Rootie).

When Murray was asked what the motivation was to write Luck, she said, “for me the idea that bad luck and [Sam] enduring a lot of bad luck could become a superpower she could turn around” is a powerful theme that resonates in our every day lives. During Sam’s various misadventures to find luck, she finds a lot of bad luck along the way. It is these random ups and downs that allow Sam to help Hazel and herself find the pieces of luck that were sitting right in front of them all along. In short, watching Luck teaches us that with every lucky streak need just as much bad luck to appreciate the good. After all, sometimes a kink in that lucky streak can lead to other fortunes down the line.
