A hidden figure of France’s past brought back into the spotlight
The 11th annual Annapolis Film Festival announced its award winners. Maryland Hall held the glamorous ceremony. Festival co-founders Lee Anderson and Patti White gave opening remarks. They spoke about the value of independent award shows and the importance of films. This film festival enticed diverse community members.
I was able to sit down and talk with Claudia Zevallos who has appeared in such films as ‘A Better Place’, ‘Day of Days’ and ‘Tyson’s Run’. She currently stars as Angelica in the new film ‘A Snowy Day in Oakland’.

In 2018, Will Merrick’s thriller Searching drew audiences in with its unique form of storytelling, as the entire film was told through the screen of a computer. It followed a father, played by John Cho, as he searches for his missing daughter using various digital tools and platforms, including social media, search engines, and video chat. The film received critical acclaim for its innovative storytelling that had audiences on the edge of their seats. In addition, the filmmakers used real websites and software interfaces in the film to create a more authentic and immersive viewing experience.
A close-up of a woman’s bare legs appeared on the screen. She wore a thin, floral nightgown. Dry blood depicted the sheer physical and emotional pain. In the intense scene, she screamed. Another woman rushed in with a towel to wipe the blood away. The fictional film ‘Women Talking’ (2022) communicated the ongoing need for women’s liberation.
