Raoul Peck’s Silver Dollar Road Unearths a Family’s Fight for Land Rights

by Branda Ayo October 5, 2023
written by Branda Ayo

Variety Gotham Week kicked off with a screening of Raoul Peck’s latest documentary Silver Dollar Road on Monday, Oct. 2 in partnership with Amazon Studios at the Angelika Film Center. Silver Dollar Road is a documentary film directed by Raoul Peck that tells the story of the Reels family in North Carolina and their decades-long battle to reclaim their ancestral land. The film sheds light on the historical injustices faced by Black families in America regarding land ownership.

The film is told through family matriarchs Mamie Reels Ellison and her niece Kim Renee Duhon who continue fighting for their families’ land even after their brothers and uncles Melvin and Licurtis are wrongfully imprisoned. Melvin and Licurtis become two of the longest-serving inmates for civil contempt in the country spending close to eight years behind bars for refusing to give up their property. Their struggle is a reflection of the broader challenges faced by Black communities across the country. Something that was once seen as invaluable has now become a commodity and the Reels stood in the way of that greed. Despite living on the land & raising their families, they were deemed inferior to those who only saw the land as property and possession.

Courtesy of Prime Video

Raoul Peck joined Variety Gotham Week for a Q&A following the film. During the Q&A he emphasized the importance of authenticity, empathy, and the enduring impact of the film. Peck highlighted his intention not to overly stylize the documentary but rather allow the Reels family to be themselves. He stressed the need to protect both the people involved in the film and the protagonist, ensuring that their story was portrayed with integrity. His goal was to avoid depicting the family as victims and, instead, to present them as parents, uncles, and human beings. By doing so, he aimed to create a connection with the audience, so that when the dramatic moments unfolded, the empathy would still be central.

Peck touched upon the broader context of land ownership and deprivation, a theme that extends beyond the Reels family’s experience. He noted that many people have come from land somewhere and were deprived of it, often involving their parents. This phenomenon is not confined to rural areas but also manifests in cities through gentrification, where marginalized communities are pushed out.

Courtesy of Prime Video

In the context of Beaufort, North Carolina, where the film is primarily set, Peck noted that the town’s residents generally know each other, implying a sense of familiarity and community. However, beneath this surface of familiarity lies a deeper issue related to racial and economic disparities. This is where the power structure comes into play.

Peck observed that despite the close-knit nature of the community, the Black population in Beaufort was disproportionately affected by land dispossession. These disparities reflect a broader pattern in America that particularly affects Black Americans and their access to economic justice. In his own words, Peck emphasized that the film isn’t just a story but a lasting memory. He didn’t want the film to be a detached narrative but he also wanted people to care for the characters as much as he did.

Silver Dollar Road will be available to stream on Prime Video 10/20 and open for viewing 10/13 in select theaters

Director and filmmaker Matthew Mishory’s Documentary “Fioretta” Prepares to Premiere Globally

by Britt Trachtenberg October 3, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On September 30 in Woodstock, Israeli director and filmmaker Matthew Mishory’s documentary Fioretta (2023) will premiere at the  Woodstock Film Festival. After, the ad hoc Maverick Sextet will play a live string performance of composer Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night).  A Q&A session with the production crew and subjects will occur.

The film will premiere on October 5 in Zurich too. After, the ad hoc Zurich Sextet will perform the aforementioned piece live. A similar Q&A will take place.

On October 8, Tel Aviv’s ANU Museum of the Jewish People will screen the film as well. After, a cocktail reception and Q&A session will ensue. The film chronicles the poignant journey of a father and son as they reconnect with their family’s history. The feature goes into depth about the experiences.

Famous litigator Randall Schoenberg travels with his 18-year-old son throughout Europe. They search for the gravesite of their oldest known relative, “Fioretta.” Through the discovery, they will reclaim 500 years of their familial history. They are the descendants of the acclaimed composer Arnold Schoenberg.

The world knows Randall as the recoverer of Nazi-looted prized pieces. He returns the artifacts to the families of their original owners. People know him as a genealogy expert. His greatest achievement occurs in this incredible story, where he reunites his family’s documents. The film has fascinating visual elements.

At the beginning, a title slide says “Prague, 1991.” The film shows a liminal, parking lot space. In a long shot, a man carries two duffle bags. Eerie music accompanies him. Then, the movie cuts to a boy who examines pages.

In a voiceover, Schoenberg suggests that children conduct genealogy assignments for school. They create small family trees for classes. When he was eight years old, his grandmother gave him a huge family tree. Meanwhile, his father’s family tree dates back to 1974. He utilized books that related to his grandfather’s centennial birthday. With this information, Schoenberg became known for genealogy at school.

The film shows old footage of Schoenberg. In the grainy shots, he uses public transportation. This deepens his connection to genealogy. The motion picture displays eye-catching shots of buildings. He says that memory has always interested him. He discusses the roles of the past, present, and future. Then, he arrives at a house. It relates to his rich family history.

In 2005, Schoenberg’s family moved into the house. He provides descriptions of his family members.

Twenty-four years ago, Schoenberg married his wife. They have children: Dora (24), Nathan (21), and Joey. Dora advocates for memory through her program, Remember Us. The organization pairs children of recent bar and bat mitzvahs with victims of the Holocaust. Joey trains to become a chef. Schoenberg’s wife, Pam, owned a photography gallery for a while. The family eats dinner together on a beautiful balcony.

Schoenberg gives a family toast, in which he mentions his travel plans. In the upcoming days, he would depart for Vienna. He has a meeting at the Schoenberg Center. Joey would come to meet him there. Together, they would embark on what Schoenberg calls a “roots trip.” They hope to uncover more family history. In a voiceover, Joey provides his perspective.

He says, “My dad decided to take this trip throughout Europe to go find graves and family members.” Schoenberg wanted to take one of his children. Dora prepared to have surgery and Nathan had schoolwork to complete. Joey came along because he had the availability. The documentary shows stellar travel shots.

A wide shot shows the shore at dusk. A close-up shot shows a plane’s wing. In the background, the film displays an exquisite blue sky and clouds. Joey describes his connection to family history.

He says that he “can have that sort of out-of-body experience and you have chills because you have that instant connection. You’re in the place where your family was, being back there 500 years earlier.” The film shows more immaculate travel shots.

In a moving long shot, a plane wing takes off from the ground. Then, the film cuts to a moving establishing shot of an airport. In a voiceover, Joey explains that “it’s not a single family story. It’s a people. We’re part of this larger mosaic.” Schoenberg arrived at Vienna’s Arnold Schönberg Center.

The documentary shows the building’s stunning interior. In a long shot, Schoenberg works on a computer. He sits on the administration’s board. The Center preserves his family’s legacy and makes the history accessible to the public. Through the organization, Schoenberg and Joey learn more about their family’s history. They might even uncover some surprising family secrets. Mishory issued a director’s statement.

He said, “When I first met Randy Schoenberg, he mentioned his ‘interest’ in family history. This made sense; he had a very famous grandfather. But Randy’s interest stretched further back through the centuries.” Mishory mentioned Schoenberg’s genealogical background.

Mishory explained, “He had been ‘looking into it’ for quite a while and had made some progress. ‘How far back could he go,’ I asked, expecting an impressive answer: the 1850s, perhaps. ‘Five hundred years,’ he said.” Mishory connected Schoenberg’s background “all the way back to the formation of the Jewish Ghetto in Venice. And he had the encyclopedic list of names (and documents) to prove it.” Mishory described the documentary’s narrative as well.

He said, “This father-son voyage through time and space (Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy, and California) became the narrative backbone of our film.” He described his personal preferences in the documentary genre, saying “I like to
watch characters change subtly, relationships deepen, dynamics quietly shift. And this is what happens in Fioretta.” Mishory identified the film’s strong emotional connection.

He “filmed Fioretta as a narrative feature film that happens to be a documentary, avoiding the trappings and conventions of the genre that have proliferated with streaming.” He discussed what sets his film apart, saying “This is not an
‘interviews and experts movie.’ The camera roams, settling to catch objects’ locations and faces. Crucial emotional sequences are captured on Ektachrome film. And fragments of Randy’s first trip to Prague, just after the fall of Communism, come to life in a 16mm film-within-a-film.” Schoenberg commented on the film’s genesis.

His cousin, artist and filmmaker Serena Nona, came up with the idea of Fioretta (2023). She learned that Schoenberg’s genealogical research dated back to a family in the 500-year-old Jewish Ghetto in Venice. Then, Schoenberg said “Serena thought we could make a documentary film. When I mentioned the idea to producer Brad Schlei and director Matthew Mishory in Los Angeles, they agreed.” Schoenberg discussed the film’s impact on his family.

Schoenberg and Joey “met a great many strange and fascinating people who helped us uncover the traces that my family left behind. The documentary is as much about my relationships with these various characters and my relationship with my son as it is about the genealogical journey.” He outlined his goals for the documentary as well.

Schoenberg said, “My hope is that the film inspires people to explore their own family history, as I did, to learn a little something about themselves.” The documentary had an excellent production crew.

Rob Levine executively produced and co-wrote the film. Bradford Schlei, Álvaro Fernández, and Anneta Furdecká produced the movie. Maciej Twardowski arranged the cinematography, while Marc Cohen edited the footage. The video had fascinating technological speculations.

The production crew filmed the movie on location in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Italy. The film has interesting technical speculative facts. The audio is Audio 5.1 with Stereo Mix available and the Aspect Ratio is 16:9. The production crew used Alexa Mini LF and ARRIFLEX 416 (Super 16mm) cameras. The film connects to recent historical events. On September 13, Arnold Schoenberg’s birthday occurred. In 2024, his 150th anniversary will commence.

Movie Review: V/H/S 85

by Julian Cannon October 3, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

“V/H/S/85” rises as the thrilling sixth entry in the beloved analog horror anthology. Within a franchise renowned for its innovative narratives and spine-tingling horrors, this newest installment not only lives up to its predecessors but forges a chilling trail of its own. Join me as we navigate its dark and gore-soaked passages, where storytelling and visceral horror take center stage.

First and foremost, “V/H/S/85” transports us back to the pulsating heart of the 1980s, an era characterized by mullets, neon hues, and the omnipresent cassette tapes. Initially, I harbored reservations when I learned of the film’s deep dive into ’80s nostalgia.

The fear of it succumbing to the oversaturation of nostalgia in modern entertainment, exemplified by hits like “Stranger Things” and “IT,” loomed large. However, my concerns were quickly quashed as the creators deliberately avoided the nostalgia trap. Instead, they forged a path that was brutal, unrelenting, and marked by a distinctly chaotic and violent tone.

What sets “V/H/S/85” apart are its exceptional segments, possibly the most unique in the entire franchise. Thanks to a cadre of top-notch writers and directors, each segment in this film is a cinematic knockout.

The movie comprises four technically separate segments, seamlessly interwoven with a wraparound story that binds them together, a classic trademark of the V/H/S series.

Director Mike Nelson kicks things off with ‘No Wake,’ immersing us in the heart of the ’80s. Nelson’s portrayal of the era’s visual aesthetics is nothing short of sublime, evoking the sensation of stumbling upon an old VHS tape at a friend’s house. This segment blends a classic horror trope with a captivating twist, etching its name in V/H/S history as the first two-parter, a testament to its wickedness.

Indie horror sensation Gigi Guerrero takes center stage with her segment, “God of Death.” Here, various employees and first responders at a news station grapple with what initially appears to be a catastrophic earthquake. However, as the narrative unfolds, a more sinister cause behind the devastation comes to light. Guerrero’s storytelling prowess shines, and the gore on display is both shocking and meticulously crafted.

Director Natasha Kermani helms ‘TKNOGD,’ a segment that’s essentially a one-actor show, brilliantly executed by its lead. Kermani’s cyberpunk tale delves into a woman’s seething disdain for the technological advances of the 1980s, particularly the rise of virtual reality. Her invocation of the ‘techno-god’ with her hatred takes viewers on a harrowing journey. The segment masterfully blends elements of a blackbox theater production with a retro 1980s twist. The lead actress’s performance is a tour de force, immersing viewers in the character’s seething anger.

The film enlists the talents of the dynamic duo, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, known for their work on “Sinister” and “The Black Phone,” for their segment, ‘Dreamkill.’ Derrickson weaves a chilling, eerie, and ominous narrative, reminiscent of their previous collaborations. It’s a grim tale of violent murders with a supernatural twist that leaves audiences captivated and craving more.

Finally, the film is expertly wrapped up and interconnected through David Bruckner’s “Total Copy,” a wraparound segment that serves not only as a narrative but also as the adhesive binding all the individual segments together in classic V/H/S fashion. ‘Total Copy’ starts as an unusual science documentary, the kind one might stumble upon while aimlessly channel surfing late at night. Bruckner impeccably captures this peculiar vibe, making it my personal favorite in the franchise. It boasts startling special effects, solid acting, and an all-encompassing eerie story that weaves everything together seamlessly.

In conclusion, “V/H/S/85” takes audacious leaps and they pay off handsomely. Undoubtedly one of my favorites in the franchise, just trailing behind the very first film, “V/H/S 85” segments are a captivating maelstrom of chaos, teetering on the edge of madness in all the right ways. If you’re yearning for another dose of ’80s nostalgia, look elsewhere. But if you crave a relentless barrage of found footage frights delivered with audacious direction, gruesome gore, and inventive storytelling, “V/H/S/85” should be at the top of your must-watch list.

With its fearless approach to horror, it boldly secures its position as the second-best gem in the illustrious V/H/S franchise. Mark your calendars; the film arrives on Shudder on October 6th, ready to unleash its visceral and narrative brilliance upon the world.

It Lives Inside: Megan Suri, Betty Gabriel talk new horror

by Candace Higgins October 2, 2023
written by Candace Higgins

Megan Suri, known for her role in “The MisEducation of Bindu,” stars in a new horror, “It Lives Inside.” Suri plays an Indian-American teenager named Sam, struggling with her cultural identity. She has a falling out with her former best friend and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness.

Suri, who admittedly loves horror films, jumped to work on this film immediately. From the start, she says working with director and writer Bishal Dutta had been a pleasure due to both having a personal connection to the script. Suri says “It Lives Inside” touches on the nuance pressure to fit in. “I think children of any type of immigrant, especially in the U.S.  would say, there is this weird pressure to conform and I think that’s really a universal experience for any teenager, honestly,” Suri says.

Suri’s character, Sam, often relies on the guidance of her teacher, played by Betty Gabriel. Gabriel plays a dedicated school teacher named Joyce who becomes concerned  about Sam’s ex-best friend’s strange behavior. Her growing concern puts her at risk; proving when you play with fire, you get burned.

Gabriel says, “It’s definitely horror movie. {laughs} It’s definitely incredibly jarring and just really unsettling.”

“It Lives Inside” is currently in theaters.

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie [Review: From a 9-Year-Old]

by Tammy B September 29, 2023
written by Tammy B

Hey guys! My name is Seven and I’m taking over my mom’s account 🙂

So this week I got to see the new Paw Patrol movie. At first, when my mom told me about it, I was like; I don’t want to go see this movie because it’s going to be too babyish for me. But she forced me to go, of course, and to my surprise, it was actually pretty good and not too babyish at all. So here I am doing my very First Movie Write-up Review! Check out below! (P.S. Mom helped a little, but only a bit.)

Once upon a time in Adventure City, a magical meteor crash-landed with a BOOM! And guess what happened? The PAW PATROL PUPS got Super-duper Powers and became…The MIGHTY PUPS!  Yeahhhh!

For Skye, the cutest and tiniest pup on the team, this was like a dream come true! She felt like the coolest pup in town! But uh-oh, things took a wild turn when the pups’ biggest nemesis, Humdinger, broke out of jail!! And guess what? He teamed up with Victoria Vance! She’s a totally  crazy, mad scientist who didn’t want to be called a “mad” scientist. Also, she was obsessed with meteors. If meteors could talk, they would say to her, like, why are you so obsessed with me? (Mariah Carey voice lol). Anyway, she and the old mayor wanted to steal the pups’ superpowers to become ultimate supervillains!  Can you believe that?

Yeah, so as you guessed it, Adventure City was in BIG trouble! The fate of the whole city was hanging by a thread.  And who could save the day? Duh, The Mighty Pups of course! They had to stop those sneaky supervillains before it was too late.  It was up to Skye and her superpowers to show everyone that even the tiniest pup could make the biggest, most awesome difference!

So, get ready for an epic, mind-blowing adventure where the Mighty Pups will fight, fly, and use their super-duper powers to protect Adventure City! It’s time to show those baddies that nobody messes with the PAW Patrol! Let’s go, Mighty Pups, let’s save the day!

The movie is out TODAY!!! Check it with your family and friends. Hope you like it 🙂

Paw Patrol, we’re on a roll!

Check me out on IG @LeaveituptoSeven

Steven Out! Peace!

Bridging the Wealth Divide: ‘Dumb Money’ Chronicles the Modern-Day Struggle of David vs. Goliath

by Julian Cannon September 28, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

In an era defined by escalating disparities between the privileged elite and the rest of society, “Dumb Money” thrusts us into the epicenter of a battle where underdogs boldly confront the one percenter.

Recalling the fervor of Occupy Wall Street, a movement that erupted over a decade ago against wealth inequality, the documentary draws parallels to the more recent GameStop Short Squeeze of Jan. 2021. A riveting narrative unfolds, inspired by “The Antisocial Network,” reimagining events from just over two and a half years ago.

The story kicks off in the summer of 2019, introducing Keith Gill, brilliantly portrayed by Paul Dano—a Chartered Financial Analyst and YouTuber. Gill passionately champions the undervalued GameStop stock on platforms like YouTube and Reddit, attracting a growing legion of everyday individuals. As the movement gains momentum, Wall Street’s titans grow increasingly uneasy. In the end, Gill and his cohort of investors achieve unprecedented success, leaving Wall Street’s elite reeling from substantial losses.

Paul Dano’s portrayal of Gill is exceptional, capturing the essence of a quirky yet savvy YouTuber and financial analyst. His performance adds depth to the intricate financial machinations beneath the surface. Supported by a stellar cast including Seth Rogen, Vincent D’Onofrio, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Anthony Ramos, the ensemble contributes to the film’s formidable impact.

Director Craig Gillespie, known for his work on “Cruella,” maintains an engaging pace, translating the script into a visually captivating narrative. Despite the potentially intimidating financial jargon, the film ensures accessibility, breaking down complex concepts for a diverse audience.

“Dumb Money” promises an engaging experience for all, whether you’re a financial enthusiast looking to revisit a captivating chapter of history or someone intrigued by the real-life clash between financial giants and the underdogs.
