On The Scene: Wicked Musical Themed Milkshake Returns to Hershey’s Chocolate World in NYC for 20th Anniversary

by Sydney Hargrove October 16, 2023
written by Sydney Hargrove

In a world where the city never sleeps and dreams are always on the horizon, an enchanting collaboration has emerged to defy gravity, and our taste buds. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the iconic Broadway musical Wicked,  Hershey’s Chocolate World in Times Square has unveiled a limited-edition masterpiece that promises to take your taste buds on a magical journey.

Anyone who’s had the chance to catch the show within its twenty year run knows that it’s so much more than simply what we don’t see in The Wizard of Oz.  It’s a story of friendship, love, and the power of defying expectations. In a similar spirit, the Wicked Milkshake brings a new level of sweetness to the heart of New York City, combining two beloved sensations.

The milkshake itself doesn’t just look stunning, it’s delicious as well. The rich combination of the dark chocolate and mint is scrumptious, nostalgic to childhood summer days in the same way that for many, Wicked is nostalgic to a first Broadway show or a school field trip many years ago. The collaboration between Wicked and Hershey’s Chocolate World is not just about a limited-time beverage; it’s about this nostalgia, combined with a shared love for creativity and the desire to create unforgettable moments. Just as Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship defied the odds and changed the course of Oz’s history, this collaboration is a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression and culinary delights.

Available now through the end of October, the Wicked Milkshake is a match made in heaven. Combining the refreshing coolness of mint with the rich indulgence of dark chocolate, the delectable creation is a perfect homage to the Wicked universe.

“We partner with Turkey Hill, which they make some amazing ice creams, and they make it super creamy,” said Hershey’s Chocolate World Food and beverage department manager Gina Shin, on the process behind creating the shake. “It’s their mint chocolate chip ice cream, and we blend that up, and we make it into a really smooth, enjoyable consistency. And then on top of that, we put a good amount of whipped cream. And then we drizzle our Hershey’s dark chocolate syrup as well as some fun green syrup on there to make it Wicked. And we add the dark chocolate mint duo Kit-Kat bar on top”

Don’t miss your chance to savor this delectable creation. The clock is ticking, and, just like in Wicked, time is of the essence. Defy gravity and head down to Times Square today, and be prepared to be swept off your feet by the Wicked Milkshake. But remember, just like in the Land of Oz, good things never last forever, so seize the moment while you still can!

Exclusive: Executive Producers of Disney+’s Goosebumps Talks introducing the Franchise to the current generation at New York Comic Con

by Julian Cannon October 14, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

At New York Comic Con, the executive producers of Disney+’s new adaptation of the beloved “Goosebumps” spoke with the press. The producers, known for their expertise in creating thrilling and family-friendly content, shared insights into their approach to reviving the classic series.

The audience was treated to a sneak peek of what to expect from the new “Goosebumps” series, with promises of spine-tingling adventures, nostalgic callbacks, and fresh, modern twists. Their presence at the convention generated significant buzz and anticipation for the upcoming show, reminding fans that the eerie tales of R.L. Stine are set to captivate a new generation of viewers on the Disney+ platform.

During the press conference at New York Comic Con, Executive Producer Rob Letterman took the opportunity to discuss the approach to the new “Goosebumps” series compared to its earlier iterations. Letterman emphasized the importance of staying true to the essence of R.L. Stine’s iconic tales while also infusing them with a fresh, contemporary twist.

He explained that the advancements in technology and storytelling techniques since the original “Goosebumps” series allowed the creative team to dive deeper into the eerie and supernatural elements, making the scares even more captivating. Moreover, Letterman highlighted the commitment to bringing the beloved characters and monsters to life in a way that would resonate with both dedicated fans of the classic books and a new generation of viewers. His insights provided an exciting glimpse into the approach that would make the upcoming “Goosebumps” adaptation a thrilling and faithful reimagining of the beloved series.

“I think that the big difference was that like the books, this was serialized. And so it is complicated to tell a story that has lots of interconnections and stuff. And so that was the huge difference,” he said.

Nicholas Stoller, one of the Executive Producers behind the new “Goosebumps” series, emphasized the necessity for the franchise to evolve with the times when we asked him. He noted that while the original “Goosebumps” captivated a generation of readers and viewers, the modern audience has different expectations and a changed media landscape. Stoller stressed the importance of preserving the essence and eerie charm of R.L. Stine’s stories while adapting them to cater to today’s audience.

“Trying to get it elevated where it would appeal to people who may have grown up on the books and are in their thirties and forties now, as well as young, younger teens and people who have no experience with Goosebumps inspired us to make a show that works for everybody,” he said. “And we also tonally, in putting in addition to obviously the goose bumps and the horror stuff wanted to draw upon, like movies that we all loved as kids, like the John Hughes movies or, you know, like a TV show, like Freaks and Geeks or Edge of Seventeen likes that stuff that really respects kids.”

We asked Hilary Winston, one of the Executive Producers of the new “Goosebumps” series, about the show’s approach. Winston emphasized the importance of grounding the narrative in authenticity and transparency. She noted that, while “Goosebumps” is known for its supernatural and spine-tingling elements, maintaining a sense of relatability and emotional depth is key to engaging the audience. This approach ensures that the scares and thrills are not only entertaining but also resonate with viewers on a more profound level. By striving for a balance between the fantastical and the emotionally authentic, “Goosebumps” aims to deliver a compelling and unforgettable storytelling experience for its audience.

“This show is really grounded,” she said. “How would you actually react if this stuff was happening in your life, if you really found a haunted mask? Like, how would you act? And that’s one of the things that we always talked about in the writers and production room.”

Exclusive: Norman Reedus Expresses His Acting Versatility on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

by Julian Cannon October 13, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

During a press invited conference at New York Comic Con for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Norman Reedus spoke candidly about the range of acting he has undertaken throughout this show compared to the main show when we asked him. Known for his iconic portrayal of Daryl Dixon in “The Walking Dead,” Reedus expressed his enthusiasm for embracing diverse characters and genres.

Norman Reedus, reflecting on expanding his range on his acting when we asked him, shared a glimpse into his thought process and motivation. As he discussed his enduring role as Daryl Dixon in “The Walking Dead,” he emphasized the personal and professional growth he has experienced over the years. Reedus candidly expressed his desire to evolve as an actor and explore new dimensions of character portrayal.

“I’m aging in real time and I’ve learned lots of lessons. I wanted to try to do something different. I spoke a lot about finding vulnerabilities in him (Daryl) and I don’t mind being the hero, I just don’t want to know that I am the hero,” said Reedus.

Norman Reedus NY Comic Con 2023

Reedus stressed the significance of working to earn character moments and commencing from a position of vulnerability. He aimed to genuinely capture Daryl Dixon’s challenging journey, where he grapples with both physical and emotional brokenness as he embarks on the next phase of his life. Additionally, Reedus underscored his intention to portray Daryl in a distinct manner, particularly in showcasing the character’s brighter moments, setting him apart from the main show.

“I wanted to earn the moments and I wanted to start low. And as he character, he’s broken when he gets there. He’s physically broken, and he’s finding himself again and becoming a man again in a different way.”

Norman Reedus opened up about a specific, pivotal moment in his acting career, which was the scenes he shared with Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Season 7, Episode “The Cell” of “The Walking Dead.” In these scenes, Reedus aimed to portray his character, Daryl Dixon, in a raw and unvarnished manner. He sought to strip Daryl down to his most vulnerable state, emphasizing the character’s brokenness and vulnerability. Reedus explained that the intention behind this approach was to create a compelling character arc in which Daryl could rebuild himself from the ground up, both emotionally and physically on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

“We did it with Negan in The Cell. I remember being the guy down here and trying to fight my way back up and when Negan is like, ‘what’s your name?’ And I don’t say Negan. That’s like a “fuck yeah” moment, you know? I wanted to be stripped down starting from zero.”

On The Scene: Lily Martinez’ “Siempre en mi Corazón” Catrina Costume Exhibit

by Claire Kay Hernandez October 12, 2023
written by Claire Kay Hernandez

On October 5th, I had the pleasure of entering into the enchanting world of Lily Martinez’s “Siempre en mi Corazón” Catrina Costume Exhibit at the Gateway to Nature Center & Museum in Los Angeles. This opening marked the commencement of the Día De Los Muertos season. It was a captivating journey into the heart of Mexican Catrina culture, as seen through the eyes of a true native Angeleno.

As I strolled through the exhibit, I was immediately struck by the exquisite craftsmanship that graced every corner of the room. Each of the 25 Catrina costumes on display, handcrafted over the years by Lily Martinez, was a breathtaking testament to her dedication and passion. The attention to detail was nothing short of awe-inspiring, making me wonder how someone could create such intricate, delicate works of art. Each costume told a unique story, a vivid portrayal of the Catrina tradition that continues to thrive today.

Walking through “Siempre en mi Corazón,” it was clear that the entire exhibit was a love letter to the culture. The vivid colors, the elegant designs, and the genuine care in every piece resonated with the warmth and love with which this tradition is held. The atmosphere was more than just an art display; it was a celebration of life and a tribute to those who have come before us.

Tequila CAZADORES, known for its commitment to authenticity and tradition, was the perfect partner for this event. Their premium tequila offerings added a delightful touch of Mexican heritage to an already remarkable evening, turning it into a proper fiesta.

It was a chance to immerse yourself in the rich culture of Mexican Catrina tradition and celebrate life in a way that only Los Angeles can offer.

Jharrel Jerome, Preston Mitchum, Tinashe and More Celebrate Creativity at CultureCon

by Kadeem Lundy October 12, 2023
written by Kadeem Lundy

For all creative content creators CultureCon was the place to be this past weekend. The Creative Collective in partnership with Max took over the Brooklyn Navy Yard for two day cultural convention which featured discussions with some of the top Black entertainers of today, entrepreneurs, and social media influencers, along with activations set up by companies including Adidas, Spotify and Kickstarter and food tastings from Black owned restaurants and chefs in New York City.

During the two day event, Adidas allowed attendees the opportunity to express their creativity by designing their own Adidas classic sneaker, and Spotify allowed attendees to record mini single person podcast in recording both that they set up, in which attendees were also encouraged to launch their own podcast on Spotify for Podcasters. Award winning photographer Greg Noire was also on hand taking photos of attendees who stopped by the Culture Rated activation presented by Amazon Prime Video.

Emmy Award winner Jharrel Jerome spoke at the CultureCon on Saturday (October 7). While Jerome is known for his acting in the Oscar winning film Moonlight and his Emmy winning performance in When They See Us, and his current role in I’m a Virgo, he is planning on releasing a four part musical project titled Someone I’m Not through Sony Music. Speaking on the timing of the musical project during a discussion during CultureCon Jerome told the audience, ” I think the Emmy was a blessing, but at the same time it comes with what’s next for me, can you top it can you keep doing it. There’s a big reason why I’ve been quiet and haven’t been rushing into the next project. I want to make sure that the project challenges me like the last one did and that’s not easy. Projects that I have been a part of don’t come around often. So as an artist I know people are looking at me like alright you wanna rap that’s cool but what’s it for what’s it about, and so those are the questions I got to answer in order to gain the respect and in order to garner a certain attention for it. So I’m willing to take those questions and roll with the punches”. When asked about mentally dealing with challenges of wanting to move into music while still dealing with his acting career, Jerome explained that he ‘blocks out the world’, and relies on his confidence.

The following day on October 8th, CultureCon hosted a panel discussion with Faith Jenkins, Real Housewives of Potomac star Candiace Dillard Bassett and Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard star Preston Mitchum, discussed navigating career after achieving an initial level of success, while finding ways to showcase other talents to prevent being boxed in, and helping to find ways to deal with and overcome imposter syndrome. “You will really find yourself creating a lot of mistakes if you don’t know who you are before you get your big break. There’s the purpose of saying no just as much as saying yes, so know what you have to say yes to and most importantly know what you need to say no to to define your purpose”, Mitchum stated during the panel discussion. “Not everyone feels they have to be accountable to our community when they are representing themselves on TV, and I think that’s a real shame, honestly. I think when we do take this mantle, we have an obligation to community right and it means also we’re gonna make mistakes. The reason why I love reality TV so much I was watching all of them before I also became one of them, and it’s such an opportunity to discuss real things”, Mitchum also mentioned.

Singer/Actress Tinashe shared that “there’s absolutely no substitute for experience” when she hit the stage to discuss how she navigates her career in the music industry. Tinashe recently released her album BB/Ang3l and is planning to promote the album on tour.
